HOW TO REQUEST A BIRTHDAY CARD FROM THE PRESIDENT FOR A SENIOR CITIZEN WITH 80 PLUS YEARS! a visit to the White House (virtually, of course) to find the answer. We typed "birthday greeting" into the search box on the front page of the web site and clicked on the first result. A page from the White House Greetings Office gave us the lowdown on requesting a card from President George W. Bush. Greetings can be sent to U.S. citizens for the following: * birthdays (the recipient must be turning 80 or older) * wedding anniversaries (the couple must be celebrating 50 years or more) * births * weddings * Eagle Scout ceremonies * Girl Scout Gold awards * Bar or Bat Mitzvahs or "equivalent occasions" Here's the procedure: 1. At least six weeks in advance, mail a written request for a greeting to: The White House Attn: Greetings Office Washington, D.C. 20502-0039 2. Make sure to include the following: * the name and address of the recipient * the date of the occasion * for a birthday, include the age of the recipient * for an anniversary, include the number of years married * for a wedding, include the married names and address of the couple * for a birth, include the date of birth and the full names and address of the parents If all goes as planned (this is the government we're talking about), the card should be mailed 10 days before the event. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? This photo was associated with the article in the Spring 2003 edition of The Orator (publication of the Henry County Historical Group). I have a copy of the same photo in my family collection. Until reading the article I had no positive id for the men pictured in the photo. Any additional information which you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated (spouses, DOB, parents, etc). With the identity of these two men revealed, I am still unable to link them to anyone in my family tree; therefore, I am perplexed as to how this photo came to belong in my family's possession. I have Henry Co connections to Blankenship/Wiggins/Murphy/Harrison to name a few. Thanks for any info which you may provide.

The family story has been that NW was left with the Loftis family..."orphaned" as some of the elders say. Here are the "facts": NW's parents were both born in GA (1880 census) NW was born in AL (1850 census & those following) NW was born on August 4, 1845 (inscription on headstone) NW was reared by George & Elleny Loftis in Alabama (1850 & 1860 census) NW used the name of Loftis until sometime in the 1870s (1865 marriage record; 1870 census) George Loftis was born c. 1813 in SC or GA (census records) Elleny Loftis was born c. 1811 in GA (census records) (various spellings of Loftis in records -- Loflis / Loftes / Loftus / Loftess) I've recently learned another bit of information that I hope will prove helpful in finding NW's birth parents. Sometime in the late 1870s or early 1880s, two men rode up to NW's house on horses, said they were from Georgia, and told one of NW's boys ("Doc") that they wanted to see his father. They talked and visited for several days and then left. Doc's father told him that the men said they were his brothers. My dad tells me she had brothers named Wesley, Alvin and Marion Philyaw and she had a sister named Gertrude who married Calvin Green. Wylie McKnight and Leanne Philyaw had several sons; my grandfather Wesley Clarence McKnight, Otis, Odus, and Clyde. There was another in Hayneville, LA. Wylie Smith had a twin brother named Cellar Jones, and brothers named Harrison, Hilliard and Victor McKnight. I believe Wesley, Alvin, Marion, Leanne and Gertrude Philyaw's mother's name was Weeks because uncle Clyde McKnight had a picture of grandma Weeks in his bedroom at Fouke. I would love to learn about Leanne and who was her father and mother and siblings.

Does anyone know about a newspaper called the Headland Standard. I tried to locate it at the Archives, but it was not listed in their bound index of papers on microfilm. Also does anyone know the name of a Dothan paper that went out of circulation in 1914. I am looking for a obituary that was published a year before that. Le.
