    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wadford-Watford-Hubbard-Hammock-Gafford Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/YS.2ADI/2886 Message Board Post: I am researching my g-grandfather, William Henry Whadford. He was supposedly born September 15, 1862(?) in Alabama(?) approximately during the Civil War years (different years on different censuses) and the tale told is that his family may have originally come from the Carolinas and/or Georgia to perhaps Newton, Dale County, Alabama, where he may have been born. He was orphaned at a young age when his family may have died in a "plague" possibly on a river(house)boat and the story has it he was discovered alone after a couple of days. He may have ended up at an orphanage or facility and at some point he was claimed and sent to live with a supposed “uncle.” This may have been in Florida. He questioned whether his claimer was a true uncle because he felt used as an indentured servant and this prompted him to run away with alleged “cousins.” He eventually migrated to Texas and the family is able to trace him from his first marriage to Mary E. Have! ns on October 25, 1885 in Rains County, Texas where he had worked building Sulpher Springs Road. I found an Alabama census listing a Willie Wadford approximately the same age as my g-grandfather may/would have been. I included this information as the Hubbard last name may be some type of clue or tie you may recognize. It is the 1870 census of Shelby County, Hillsboro, P.O., Alabama, page 423. I cannot clearly make out Ms. Wadford's first name. The listing is: Hubbard, James D., age 24, M, W, Farmer b. Alabama. Mollie (nickname?), age 20, F, W, Keeping house, b. Alabama. Walter R. or B., age 1, M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, ? (Annie, (N)Annie, Ammie short for Amelia?), age 25, F, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, Willie, age 4, M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. My thoughts are perhaps Ms. Wadford may have been a sister (some type of relative) to James D. or Mollie Hubbard, but she could have been only a boarder. I cannot locate any information on the Hubbards as well. There is also an 1880 census of Butler County, Oaky Streak, Alabama, page 496, listing a William Wadferd. The listing is: Hammock, George, age 49, M, W, Farmer, b. Alabama, cannot write. Sarah, age 49, F, W, Wife, Keeps house, b. Alabama. Elizabeth, age 18, F, W, Daughter, b. Alabama. Wadferd, William, age 24, M, W, Single, Laborer, b. Alabama, cannot write. It appears 1880 William Wadferd is a boarder. As probably flawed as censuses were back then and despite the name spelling and age, this could be my g-grandfather and/or possibly Shelby County Willie Wadford. I also cannot locate any information on the Hammocks either. If you have any information or search suggestions, please contact me at [email protected]

    1. New to the USGenWeb - The African-American Griot Project
    2. Sorry for any multiple recipients but this is important! A brand new USGenWeb Project has been started specifically for African-American research. All states are represented. There is a Surname List as well as other research tools on the site. Please visit and support the site. The goal of USAAG is to become a centralized location for African American research thru out the United States. The address is http://www.rootsweb.com/~afamer/index.html Please pay them a visit and contribute anything you can to the available records! Even a link to your own research site might help someone else! African-American Research is extremely difficult because of the lack of historical records before the Civil War. Hopefully this project will be of some help to researchers of those of African-American ancestry and those just interested in history for the love of history!

    1. Two Armstrong lines in Henry County
    2. Patricia Long
    3. Dear listers, When researching your Henry County Armstrongs, please realize that there are TWO lines. So far I've not connected the two. One line is that of MOSES & ELIZABETH ARMSTRONG and the other line is that of GEORGE H. ARMSTRONG. The family of George H. is found in Henry Co. in 1830. By the 1850 census his wife may be deceased. The first female on this census was Syany (?) who was 33 yrs. old born in NC. The other children are John W., Mary I, Sarah A., Elizabeth E., Thomas, and Joseph. The other Armstrong line is Moses. I descend from this line. The only children that I can positively say belong to this line is Hiram, maybe Travis, Wade, Martin and possibly Matthew. The daughters are Winifred & Sarah. I descend from Wade Armstrong who married Cynthia Kirkland in 1837 in Henry Co. Moses and his family arrived in Henry County on or about 1824. The first record documented in Henry County is the marriage of Hiram to Margaret HELTON. So far I've not separated all the Armstrongs but in researching them, don't put them all in one line. They lived in Henry County, Alabama. However, I only show one son James J. Ward born Nov 1, 1783. I wonder if Matilda was much younger than her husband. I have Joseph Ward's birthdate as 1763 South Carolina. James J. Ward married Malinda "Nancy" Ann Parrish which is the line that I am researching. There is some thought that Christopher Ward is the father of James J. Ward (some have his name as John James Ward). I have not documented this so it still needs much research. All of this needs more research but I think the birthdate for Joseph Ward may be correct. At least its a clue to where to look.

All of the other places just has him as Berry. In 1860 Berry is listed in the family of Martha age 45, Elizabeth age 60, Mary age 40, Rebecca age 20 and Joseph age 10, Berry is listed as age 13. George, Berry's brother, age 18 is listed with the Pelham family. That is the family of Harriett Pelham. I don't know much abt the King family. My only interest is that Berry's daughter, Angerone, married my ggrandfather in 1925 after my ggrandmother died in 1918.

His widow applied for a pension and stated he was in Co. E of the 6th Alabama Cavalry. I have had no luck finding any record of his war service. He seemed to drift from Henry county to Early county, Georgia.
