Current Discussion Topic: ———— Who is your earliest Greene County ancestor? ———— Dee, My earliest ancestors in Greene County were William Fortson and Jacob Alford. William Fortson, wife & many of their 10 children came to Greene Co. before the 1830 census. A son, Samuel Higginbotham Fortson married Mary Alford there in January of 1829. She was a daughter of Jacob Alford of Greene Co. Parts of both these families had moved to Lauderdale Co. MS by 1840. Rod Bush
My earliest Greene County ancestors are Dorrel and Susanna Ford and their children and Dorrel's widowed mother, Magdalen Love Ford, who arrived from Fairfield County SC and settled in Greene County initially. Susanna died following the birth of their 9th child Eliza in September 1834. The baby died the day she was born. Dorrel's mother Magdalen died in Greene County in 1837. Shortly thereafter, Dorrel and his children moved to the southern part of Sumter County near the town of Pushmataha (after the Choctaw Indian treaty opened western Alabama for settlement) where he remarried, Malinda Caroline Gibson. I would love to find Susanna's and Magdalen's graves. Are there any records of old graveyards dating back to the 1830s?
