Hello, I continue to search for any information on the family of Jordan Solomon/Soloman of Boligee. This was an African American family who had a farm and was listed in both the 1870 and 1880 census records. Jordan and his wife Onie had 12 children, according to one record, but only sons are listed in each of the census records. I have searched online records for traces of this family and noted that several of the children moved to Tuscaloosa and to Birmingham. Still, I would like to know if County Tax records and other possible local records exist that might help shed light on what became of the farm. I would so appreciate any help or thoughts on how to further research this family. Bev W
Hi Bev, I had some relatives I tried to track down in Greene County. A friend went to the Greene County courthouse a few years ago and was told that all the old files were in the basement. He did find some dumped into cardboard boxes, and one related to my search. Of course, things might have improved since then, but my best suggestion is to visit the Greene County courthouse and ask for any and all estate papers related to the family you're seeking. Estate papers are much more than a will (and if the person didn't make a will, there are papers relating to whoever handled the estate). These papers can include an inventory of property owned, any sales of estate belongings and often show handwritten receipts. The estate papers always show who got the property after someone's death and shows their names. Now as to why the girls didn't appear in the census, they may have been grown and married or working sway from home. In those cases they would appear on the census wherever they were living. If I can be of help to you, feel free to contact me. Good Morning LaRue, Thank you so much for your insightful information. It is my hope that I will be able to travel to Greene Co. sometime within the year. I may definitely have more questions for you. I have researched one of the daughters from this family who first married in Tuscaloosa in 1889 at a young age. She is found in later census records living in Bibb Co. Because I live some distance away, I would like to plan to access whatever is available. I did make a call some time ago to the Greene Co. Historical Society but did not reach anyone directly. I will probably try again.
