Hi- I'm looking for information on the family of my 3rd Great Grandmother, Mary Campbell McLean. She was born about 1823 in Alabama and married James Stephens in Greene County, AL in 1847. Her name on the marriage record is Mary Campbell. Our family history has her name as Mary Campbell McLean. I can find no info on a prior marriage to a McLean. In the 1850 census (Mt Hebron, Greene County, AL), they are living next door to a Malcolm Campbell, age 30. She died in 1855, Mt. Hebron. I can't find a grave. Any info or thoughts on my Mary Campbell and her family would be greatly appreciated. Hi Jennifer, Here's a thought on your search. Is it possible that May was born into a McLean family and then adopted and/or raised by a Campbell family (maybe related?) She might have used the McLean surname but used Campbell when she married. Often when a child's immediate family died and she was raised by kinfolk, she may have used their surname to avoid confusion or lengthy explanations to outsiders. It's also possible she was born out of wedlock and McLean was her father's name, but she chose not to use it when she married. There are lots of possible scenarios for her choice of names. It's also possible she was married to a McLean but the marriage was annulled, so she would have reverted to Campbell. Good luck in your search. I also suggest that you check neighboring county Sumter because lots of Greene county people migrated to Sumter when it was opened up for settlement after a treaty with the Choctaw tribe. My own 3rd great-grandfather lived in Choctaw before moving to Sumter. Many residents of Greene county moved there from the South Carolina upcountry, e.g., Fairfield County, so you might seek ancestors there. Best of luck in your search. If I can be of help, don't hesitate to contact me. I've been doing genealogy research for over 40 years, and I'll be glad to assist in any way I can.
