It is just common courtesy to give credit where credit is due. I corresponded with a lady recently who told me about someone downloading all of her work and claiming it as her very own. If you submit your family files to RootsWeb, you can secure what you do not want other people to have - I think this is notes, sources, etc.- but Ancestry.com does not have this feature.
