Thanks Kim! This is is great. This answers the question I had about some of the lots, but the others are further west, along Main Street, and into Mesopotamia. Dr. Abram Franklin Alexander, at his death in 1866, owned Lot #15, & Lot #27 in the town square, according to the estate papers. According to this web site he also owned, at an earlier date at any rate, Lots #17 & 21, but not Log #27. So he must have sold Lots #17& #21 and bought Lot #27. I can look this up when I get to Eutaw this summer. But I am also looking for info on * Lot #89, on which he had his house and eight acres, more or less, (400 block on Main Street, next door to the Wm. Peter Webb house) * Lots #81 & 82 across Main Street from Lot #89 * Lots #179 & 186 further west in Mesopotamia. * And a vacant lot in the Said Town fronting on the Street leading from Eutaw to Clinton about 34 feet and running back 105 bounded on the North by a lot owned by S. O. Gordon in the east by the house & lot of T. O'Connor on the South by Said Street leading from Eutaw to Clinton and on the west by the house & lot of E. W. Eckhardt. Any information on any of these lots would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Alice Campbell **

Thanks Dorothy! All I have on the house burning is a scribbled note from my mother about his houses in general (several) and all it says is 'burned 1890'. I'd known about it, just general family knowledge, but didn't know the date, and this date could refer to another house. The reason 1890 doesn't sound right to me is that Dr. Alexander died considerably before that in 1866, so the burning of a house in 1890 wouldn't really be Dr. Alexander's house and certainly wouldn't contain his father's family bible, I wouldn't think. So the search goes on... I thought I knew a lot about these Eutaw/Greene Co. folks, but I keep getting blind sided by something like this!!! Alice
Glad to know someone is still alive on this site...been awfully quiet for too, too long. Let us know about the home and the bible. I do not have any information on it, but will start a search. Dorothy O'Neill in MS
I have information that says the house of Dr. Abram Franklin Alexander burned, destroying his father's family bible. As I have a copy of his father's family bible, this is a very interesting story for me to track down! :-) Does anyone know the date the house burned? Does anyone know if it was his home in town or his plantation? Thanks! Alice Campbell
Several Coats/Coate/Coates families lived in Alabama in the 1800s. Were they related at all? To find out, we need to get more male descendants of Coates/Coats/Coate to take the Y chromosome (DNA) test. Three of my Coats line have taken it (It takes about 10 seconds to swab the inside of your cheek; then it must be mailed to the lab), and lo, we are related, plus we have about ten new, distant relatives. The problem is that there as yet are many branches in this family that would help us solve many family connections, so the links to the other relatives are as yet unknown and the kinship may be back 100s of years! So we need more males to take the test! So far 34 Coates/Coate/Coates males have been tested, and 11 distinct family lines have been identified, plus there are some that have no matches. Test results are posted here: http://www.coatsarchive.us/dna.htm For more info regarding the Coats/Coate/Coates DNA tests, go to: http://www.coatsarchive.us/dna.htm Remember DNA doesn't lie...except in the O.J. Hey All I'm looking for information on Emeline Sherley. Emeline married Belfield Lett in 1841, Green County. In the index it is spelled Sherley but I'm supposing it may have been Shirley. If anyone has information or can locate information easily/quickly..I would much appreciate it. I do not currently have access to census records etc. I have seen information stating she was the daughter of Richard D. Shirley and Mary Blain. But, that same information has emeline being married in South Carolina. Therefore I'm not sure if it is the same family or not. Thanks much Sharon Griffin Cobb

Thanks, Joe. Will get you some info shortly. The family is Caucasian, by the way. Robert
Carolyn Thanks for the reply! I am not at home, and thus can only vaguely recollect some of the cemeteries I've walked, but..... Liberty Methodist (some of my Jacksons are there...married into the Seale family; married into the Ingram family) Havana Methodist (I think)...some of my Jacksons are there: married into the McCrory family [John Scotland McCrory and another McCrory whom I cannot at this moment remember] Mt. Hebron cemetery. I, being an outsider to the area (I live in Houston), am not real familiar with the various cemetaries, but have walked what seems like thousands in the Greensboro/Eutaw areas during my several visits to the area. In some cases I had the assistance of Mrs. Jean Hoggle who lives in that area. Yep, I've found lots of the JACKSON descendants, but I cannot find JOSEPH JACKSON who died on March 31 1861. I have been to the Eutaw courthouse and found several records regarding my Joseph as well as records of Stephen Jackson and a Rueben Jackson, both of whom are unknown to me...maybe connected, maybe not. I thank you for your kind offer of assistence....Joseph has just gotta be somewhere around there! He was an educated man, and records indicate he may have been a Justice of the Peace for a while. I am inclined to believe that he was the son of a Joseph Jackson of Clarke County (who died in 1831), and thus brother to the several JACKSON descendants of that area. Oh, and by the way....these JACKSON folks were Caucasian, and according to Snedecor's Directory Joseph lived in the area in 1819. You asked of his wife's name. He had 2 wives, the first meeting with death in 1830-31. Her name was Delilah Cooper. His second wife's name was Sarah Cannon Belton Jackson, and she moved to Texas in 1868 or so with 4 of her remaining children (one was killed in the War Between the States). Robert Jackson
There is a John F. Jackson in the wills book Book C pg 508 but you probably saw that. What was the wife's name, any childrens name, was he in the Civil War,born in alabama (many came from N.Carolina).Any middle intial. I'll try to help but give as much information as you can. Thanks Joe Rice ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, August 10, 2005 5:09 PM Subject: Re: [ALGREENE] JACKSON name > While this may not be the proper format, be it known (after a few year's > absence) that I am still looking for information regarding JOSEPH JACKSON, > a > resident of Greene County from around 1819 thru 1861 (when he died in > March, > somewhere around Eutaw). While this may not be the proper format, be it known (after a few year's absence) that I am still looking for information regarding JOSEPH JACKSON, a resident of Greene County from around 1819 thru 1861 (when he died in March, somewhere around Eutaw). I've walked many, many cemeteries in Greene and Hale counties but have been unable to find a grave site. They lived in the Havana area, just north of Greensboro. Any ideas anybody? Robert Jackson [email protected]
Hi, Robert - Have you been in the Concord, Havana Methodist, Macedonia, Liberty, and Mt. Hebron Cemeteries? If you have not, I will look for you. Also, what was his wife's maiden name? That may give a hint also in which direction to look.
