Hi George, Were your Jones of Greene Co., AL and Neshoba Co., MS by any chance from Edgefield Co., SC? I, too, descend from Jones. A few of them left Edgefield Co., SC and made their way to Newton Co., MS (adjacent to Neshoba). I thought the Greene County pages had just fallen off the earth....and, you're right, the list has indeed been quiet. Not from lack of interest on my part, for sure! Linda & all, The list has been quite for a good while. My Robinsons & Herndons were in Greene County (mostly near Erie) in the early to mid 1800s. George Robinson married Mary Herndon in Spotsylvania Co., VA and moved to Greene County. Other Spotsylvania families that moved about the same time were the Hord, Cox, Herndon, and several others. Most of these were from the Fredericksburg area of VA. George & Mary's son, Edwin Robinson moved to Smith Co., MS about 1859. A few years ago I was in contact with a Herndon cousin who still lived in Erie. With her help I went through the records in the County Courthouse. There was no interest from the staff and little oversight. I could have torn pages out and carried them out for all they seemed to care. They were helpful with copying (or at least collecting my fees). With Mrs. Olive at my side I was able to go where ever I wanted. Her knowing where to go was the greatest help! The town square had the original courthouse, jail, library, and some other building still standing. It looked just about like it did in the 1800s I am sure! There are many beautiful old homes in and near Erie but I don't remember seeing any motels or at least any I would want to stay at. I think a couple of old homes are also a Bed-n-Breakfast if you are interested. It was/is a very poor area. There were a few businesses around the town square that were interesting and we ate at an excellent "home cooking" type local restaurant. I am also interested in any Stuart/Stewart or Jones family in the early/mid 1800s in Greene County. I have not established a connection but my Neshoba County, MS Stuart/Jones family seem to have possibly at least passed through Greene County. Thank you for the additional site. I am researching John Madison and all of his siblings, which was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, but were in Greene County. John and Peyton is buried in what is now Hale County. I have a Williams line in the area. I have an early Key and Grizzle lines in the area. It's really a county with no disasters, can't understand why the lack of actively. There was a Genealogy Society when I visited years ago with locked files to the public and they didn't accept donations which I carried. While I research in so many area at that time the going price for a copy was 50 cents. Greene Count was a $1.00. It was almost they didn't want the genealogy income. I will not repeat on this list what I was told. Anyone who is a member is special, we need to look at what we have. Greene County was a large area so many years ago. Today it is a poor area, mostly black with no interest. We didn't find a motel so we came home. Hi, I am a new subscriber to the list and hope someone can help me. Can someone tell me what township or where Hairston, AL was located? I know that it is listed in Hale Co., but also know that prior to that, it was in Greene Co. This is a key to breaking down a very stubborn brick wall that I have worked on for many years. I see also that there is a river that divides the 2 counties.... wondering if this could be a river where a drowning might have occurred [raft/boating accident] abt 1827? Thanks for any help! Lanita Sconce Smith Always willing to share my ignorance...

This will be long and somewhat complex, but bear with me. I'm trying to identify this girl Laura Byrd. Background: In 1880 in Forkland, AL Dr. Alexander Hamilton Byrd was the census enumerator. He also lived in Dwelling #4 with his wife's sister and her husband. In fact the first 4 houses on the census were occupied by sisters and their mother. House #1 Harry Innes Thornton, age 32, Sallie Amelia Blocker Thornton (his wife, one of the sisters), age 30, John Blocker Thornton (their son), age 9, James Innis Thornton (their son), age 7, Harry S. Thornton (their son), age 4 months House #2 Amanda Albany Watson Blocker (the mother of the sisters), age 57 John Watson Blocker (her son), age 23 House #3 Frances Amanda Browne Inge (another of the sisters, a widow), age 42 Virginia Browne Inge (her daughter), age 17 House #4 - (2 families) Dr. Alexander Hamilton Byrd, age 31 Julia Watson Blocker Byrd (his wife, another of the sisters), age 25 Alexander Hamilton Byrd (their son), age 1 and Dr. Thomas James Turpin, age 30 Annie McAlpin Blocker Turpin (his wife, another of the sisters), age 27 Annie Blocker Turpin (their daughter), age 4 Fannie Amis Turpin (their daughter), age 1 Because of the loss of the 1890 census, we aren't sure what other children were born to this group of cousins. All we know for sure is that these 4 sisters and their mother were very close in 1880. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By 1900 there families were situated thus: The families in House #1 & #4 (Turpin): James Innis Thornton (now the head of household), age 27 Harry S. Thorntom (his brother still at home), age 20 Sallie Amelia Blocker Thornton (James's mother, the sister), age 38 Annie McAlpin Blocker Turpin (Sallie's sister, now living with her nephew), age 47 Alice Ingram Turpin, (James's cousin, dau of Annie), age 18 The family in House #2: The mother died before 1900 and the brother moved away from Greene Co. The family in House #3: Fannie Inge had moved to Eutaw and now lived with her daughter Virginia Browne Inge Winn, a widow. The families in House #4: The Byrds had moved to Eutaw: Dr. Alexander Hamilton Byrd, age 55 Julia Watson Blocker Byrd (the sister), age 45 Amanda Byrd, age 19 Lavinia V. Byrd, age 17 Alexander Hamilton Byrd, abe 21 John Blocker Byrd, 16 Julia B. Byrd, age 15 Mariah Byrd, age 12 Everlin Byrd, age 6 Daniel Byrd, age 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In April 1906, Alice Turpin in Forkland was getting married to Jim D. Webb in Eutaw. She wrote many letters to her intended over the years from 1897 to 1906 and frequently mentioned her best friend Laura Byrd. Since Alice frequently stayed with friends/relatives in Eutaw, I'm not certain where Laura Byrd lived, but it was either forkland or Eutaw. In April 1906 Alice told Jim D. she wanted Laura Byrd for her Maid of Honor. She also mentioned she wanted Amanda as one of the other Maids. Was this Amanda Byrd? Her cousin very near her age? It would make sense. It would also make sense if Laura Byrd and Lavinia V. Byrd were the same person. Julia Watson Blocker Byrd said she had 9 children, 8 of whom were living in 1900. All 8 of them are accounted for on the 1900 census. So can anyone answer my question about who Laura Byrd, around 20-26 and living in Greene Co., AL in 1906 might be? Thanks for your patience in reading this. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someone will come up with a clue. Alice Campbell
One of the lines I am working on with some dead ends is the ancestors of Benjamin "Ben" Thomas, born 6 Feb 1822 in Tennessee, died April 1880 in Clay County, Mississippi. His wife was Prudence Valentine, Born 8 jun 1829 in North Carolina and died 19 mar 1908 in Clay County, Mississippi. I have a lot more on the Valentine line, but nothing on Ben. Any help will be appreciated. Richard PS This posting is being sent to several Alabama lists as well as two Thomas lists at the same time. If it doesn't apply to you, please pardon the intrusion.
