    1. [ALGREENE] Re: Campbell Family - Mt Hebron, Greene County
    2. Hi Jennifer, Here's a thought on your search. Is it possible that May was born into a McLean family and then adopted and/or raised by a Campbell family (maybe related?) She might have used the McLean surname but used Campbell when she married. Often when a child's immediate family died and she was raised by kinfolk, she may have used their surname to avoid confusion or lengthy explanations to outsiders. It's also possible she was born out of wedlock and McLean was her father's name, but she chose not to use it when she married. There are lots of possible scenarios for her choice of names. It's also possible she was married to a McLean but the marriage was annulled, so she would have reverted to Campbell. Good luck in your search. I also suggest that you check neighboring county Sumter because lots of Greene county people migrated to Sumter when it was opened up for settlement after a treaty with the Choctaw tribe. My own 3rd great-grandfather lived in Choctaw before moving to Sumter. Many residents of Greene county moved there from the South Carolina upcountry, e.g., Fairfield County, so you might seek ancestors there. Best of luck in your search. If I can be of help, don't hesitate to contact me. I've been doing genealogy research for over 40 years, and I'll be glad to assist in any way I can. 1. [ALGREENE] Solomon/Soloman family from Boligee
    2. Hello, I had posted some time back but would still love to receive some information on the family of Jordan Solomon/Soloman and wife Onie, who owned a farm in Boligee and are found with their sons in the 1870 and 1880 census in Greene Co. Solomon was also listed on the Non population schedules. This was an African American family who had 10 children. The sons were listed in the census records but not daughters, who may have been sent out to work. Jordan Solomon was born sometime around 1835. There is an early voter's registration record for him. By 1900, I could find no sign of him or his wife. One or two of the sons were still living in Greene Co. and I know one daughter was married and living in Tuscaloosa. I recall reading that there was a tornado? that devastated parts of Boligee in the 1880a but would love more information as to why this farm appears to have been decimated, I would also love to know where to access land records to determine how this farm was purchased. Finally, if Jordan and Onie did not live to 1900, where might a record be found. It is possible that Onie could have been widowed and remarried but everything is so sketchy. Thanks to anyone who might provide more history on Boligee at this time and possible places to check for this family Bev W -----Original Message----- From: Dee via ALGREENE <[email protected]> To: Dee Pavey <[email protected]> Cc: Dee <[email protected]> Sent: Wed, Jan 2, 2019 1:30 am Subject: [ALGREENE] Mail List Admin Post Please Read Hi everyone! 1. [ALGREENE] Re: Solomon/Soloman
    2. I do remember seeing this. There were other Solomon/Soloman families over the years in Greene Co. I am not sure if they were all related. There is a Perry Solomon who was born in 1795 and his wife living in Clinton in the 1880 census. It is recorded that Perry was born in North Carolina. In later census records there are Solomons living in Eutaw. As mentioned, family members can be separated depending on where they could find work. If Jordan Solomon died sometime after 1880, one of his neighbors may have bought the property. I also recall reading that there was a tornado in the mid 1880s in Boligee that destroyed several households. Thank you for bringing attention to this record. 3. My Greene County ancestors were George Robinson and his wife Mary "Polly" Herndon Robinson. Both were born in Spotsylvania, VA where they also married in 1814. They moved to Greene County about 1820. Polly's brother, Thomas Hord Herndon, moved to Greene County about the same time. George and Polly's son Edwin Robinson married his first wife Caroline E. Sherine (spelling?) in 1836 in Greene County. Caroline died about 1853 (I believe near Boligee) shortly after Richard Tyree Robinson's (my G-Grandfather) birth. Edwin then married Mary Ward in 1858 and shortly after they moved to Smith County Mississippi. I am particularly interested in Caroline Sherine. Who were her parents? Where is she buried? I know almost nothing about her. Thanks, George Stuart --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus

    2. My earliest Greene County ancestors are Dorrel and Susanna Ford and their children and Dorrel's widowed mother, Magdalen Love Ford, who arrived from Fairfield County SC and settled in Greene County initially. Susanna died following the birth of their 9th child Eliza in September 1834. The baby died the day she was born. Dorrel's mother Magdalen died in Greene County in 1837. Shortly thereafter, Dorrel and his children moved to the southern part of Sumter County near the town of Pushmataha (after the Choctaw Indian treaty opened western Alabama for settlement) where he remarried, Malinda Caroline Gibson. I would love to find Susanna's and Magdalen's graves. Are there any records of old graveyards dating back to the 1830s? 2. Good Morning LaRue, Thank you so much for your insightful information. It is my hope that I will be able to travel to Greene Co. sometime within the year. I may definitely have more questions for you. I have researched one of the daughters from this family who first married in Tuscaloosa in 1889 at a young age. She is found in later census records living in Bibb Co. Because I live some distance away, I would like to plan to access whatever is available. I did make a call some time ago to the Greene Co. Historical Society but did not reach anyone directly. I will probably try again. Of course, things might have improved since then, but my best suggestion is to visit the Greene County courthouse and ask for any and all estate papers related to the family you're seeking. Estate papers are much more than a will (and if the person didn't make a will, there are papers relating to whoever handled the estate). These papers can include an inventory of property owned, any sales of estate belongings and often show handwritten receipts. The estate papers always show who got the property after someone's death and shows their names. Now as to why the girls didn't appear in the census, they may have been grown and married or working sway from home. In those cases they would appear on the census wherever they were living.
