Thank all of you for your postings to my question. I have added the links to my lookup pages for copyrights. I have only had one lookup asked to be taken down. And another that is going to ask permission from the publisher. Thanks Kathy

I am glad to inform you that the Butler County Web Site has once again been updated. The Butler County Researcher's List been updated this week as the list of surnames continues to grow. If you would like your surnames added to the list please email me following the instructions given on the page. The September Feature of the Month is also in place. This month feature is A FAMILY OF DOCTORS: STABLER INFIRMARY & HOSPITAL. The article features Dr. L. V. Stabler, and Dr. Ernest Vernon Stabler with information on the hospital and some of it's other employees. I wish to thank Linda Bratcher McGuire who has informed me that the Bolling site has generated quite a bit of information. She says that she has received numerous emails from people who interested in Bolling. Here is an excerpt from her email: Several people have contacted me about the Bolling page. Some just wanted to say they were happy to see the photos, which prior to viewing the page, they didn't know existed. Some just wanted to let me know they were interested in the history of Bolling & would like to know more if I had it or found more. One lady got in touch with me to tell me that one of her ancestors worked at the early saw mill. Yesterday I heard from a man who lives in Bolling now, said his grandparents have lived there for years & he would like to see their names added to the "people who had lived there". If you have you received emails as a result of something listed on the Butler County web site and would like to share it, please don't hestitate. If you would like to share an old photos from McKenzie, Garland, Starlington or any other community, I would love to put them on our web page. It is your web site just as much as it is mine. Together we can make this the best county web site in the ALGenWeb. Hi everyone. Lookups done under the UsGenWeb policy should be well within the "fair use" copyright laws I think. Generally if I find a lot of information I refer the person to a library which has a very resonably priced copy policy. They will copy up to 10 pages but only if specfic page numbers are given. > At 11:59 PM 9/2/99 EDT, HudsonK@aol.com wrote: > >I have been contacted by one of my lookups. We do quite a few lookups for people from books we've purchased and >I'd like to know what everyone thinks about the above incident.>>> This is an excellent area for discussion here on the list. I do *NOT* want to cut off discussion on this topic, but I do want to make sure we are all aware of all the issues involved. Firstly, as USGenWeb volunteers, we should all be aware of the official policy on Copyrights and Lookups. (Do you CCs know this? Have you asked lookup volunteers to read and comply?) From http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/copyright.html "The USGenWeb Project will not tolerate any copyright violations. Lookup requests should be limited to one name, or perhaps two if it is a married couple. Information given should be minimal, for example: * If it is a cemetery lookup, the information should be the name of the cemetery and the dates on the headstone. * If someone asks for "everybody with XX surname" or an entire family group, or for hardcopies to be mailed, please advise that The USGenWeb Project volunteers have been asked not to comply with such requests. Lookups can extend to searching copyrighted material to determine if the material would be helpful to the requester in their research. Should the copyrighted material prove useful, the volunteer can provide the author's address and ordering information. The USGenWeb Project will endeavor to get a WRITTEN statement from each copyright holder which stipulates which books may be used for lookups. See Lookup Permission Statement." A list of authors who have refused to allow lookups is maintained on this web page: http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/authorno.html A list of authors who have explicitly granted permission for lookups is maintained on this web page: http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/authoryes.html Obviously, if Hearthstone Books owns the copyright to the books they publish, and they want to refuse permission for lookups, they have that right. Their name should be added to the list of those refusing permission. Regards, Leigh
Hi Kathy, This is why I stop doing them I was contacted by a book owner to not to do lookups. When I get request I delete them. It's sad to have to do this by Every thing I do seem to be in violation. I have been contacted by one of my lookups. They forwarded this from a mailing list they are on. I am sure copyright laws will be changed due to the internet. But can someone tell me if there are problems with doing the lookups. <<<A person offering lookups from a book he purchased was contacted by the publisher specifically Hearthstone Books and told not to perform lookups as this was a violation of the copyright laws. Has anyone been contacted concerning lookups? We do quite a few lookups for people from books we've purchased and I'd like to know what everyone thinks about the above incident.>>> Thanks Kathy
Thanks to Peggy Winton from the WINTON-L@rootsweb.com for the following information!! POST-EMs. Now you can attach a message to any of the more than 61 million records in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) at RootsWeb by using a "post-em," developed by RootsWeb's own Randy Winch. Some suggested uses: attach notes to the records of your relatives, providing researchers with a direct link to you; add background information on an individual in the database, such as pointers to other records relating to that individual; or add a correction to an incorrect record. Check the records of individuals of interest to you often. Someone recently might have left a note there for you. To add a note to a record, do a search and click on "Post-em" at the end of a record at: <http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi>.
