My mom asked me to send this to this list for her. She is in the bed sick with flu and infection and has been since Tues. She said to tell you she was sorry for any troubles and hopes she will be better in a few days. We finally got her to go to the Dr. Friday. I am trying to finish up my newest addition to Butler County. In Memory of The Seventeen - 33rd Ala Vol is a memorial page to 17 members of the 33rd Ala Vol who were killed in a CSA troop train wreck near Cleveland, TN on Nov. 4, 1862. I need information on most of those listed on the monument pictured on the page. Several have forwarded information to be included with there family member. If I can obtain a short biography of each soldier, I will include one page specifically for that soldier. Those killed include: Capt. R. J. Cooper, G. L. Smith, Lt Charles Scott, Wm. M. Smith, Wm. M. Watson, Edw. Nix, L. A. Pritchard, L. M. Bush, Clinton Evans, J. G. Lewis, O. M. Braxton, H. Clark, Z. Chandler, M. Noblin, John Hughs, B. Lloyd and T. Z. Nichols. Pages that are in place for soldiers include: John A. Hughes, Jr., 1842-1862 William M. Hello. I am in the process of placing on my Among The Creeks site at Rootsweb, the text of Albert James Pickett's "History of Alabama", the wonderful book first published in 1851. This material has been contributed by William Bell, who has provided other texts for the project. So far there are 7 chapters on the site. More will be added as soon as I prepare them. To view, go to http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cmamcrk4/pktfm.html You may freely link to the pages, if desired. Hope you enjoy this, my personal favorite of all the books written on Alabama history. ....mostly. For all intents and purposes, if your site is at RootsWeb and you have the little search engine on your page, it's fixed. Addsite is not back up, and only RW sites have been reindexed, so if you had stuff that wasn't RW it won't do that. The rest of the fixes will be coming soon. USGenWeb volunteers, Many people have been sending comments, complaints, questions, etc. to their individual Advisory Board representatives asking for some official action, opinion, etc., without sending a copy to the rest of the Board. This is fine, since it is a lot easier for you to know who your Rep is than to try to make a To list covering the entire board. But it is usually impossible for a rep to make any official response without first discussing the issue or request with the rest of the Advisory Board members. Since we try to follow standard email etiquette of not forwarding messages without the permission of the sender, this introduces a significant delay in making any response, where the Board member sends a message to the person who contacted them, asking for permission to forward their email to the rest of the Board, and waits for a reply. Since most people aren't online constantly, it could cut a day off the response time if anybody sending mail to an Advisory Board member asking for some official Board action would specify whether or not it is OK to forward their message to the rest of the Advisory Board. State Coordinators, since most of these messages come from County Coordinators, and USGENWEB-ALL is not really nearly "all", could you please forward this reminder to your state lists? Thanks, Teri Pettit CC-Rep, SE/Mid-Atlantic Region P.S. It is our policy to keep specific details of complaints on the private BOARD-EXEC-L, to protect the privacy and security of the project members involved, while discussing general issues, policy guidelines, and procedures on the archived list BOARD-L, searchable at http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl So if you want your message forwarded to BOARD-L, be aware that we may bleep out names, states, and other identifying details.

With the assistance of Kay Anderson of Monroeville, AL, we now have the October Feature of the Month online, W. T. Smith Lbr. Co. Kay has contributed and written this feature article. Linda Bratcher McQuire has also contributed more photos for the page on Bolling, Alabama . The page also has a new look. A special thanks to these to ladies for their interest in helping the Butler County ALGenWeb site become better. I am still searching for information and photos on the various communities of Butler County. If you have photos and would like to contribute information on them, please contact me. All, it has been brought to my attention that two of the Butler Links: 1> Butler County History, 2> Butler County Cemeteries and 3> Butler County Map are broken links. I have checked them and cannot find this information on the web so they have been deleted. I will attempt to relocate them and place them back on the page. If you have the correct URL for these sites, I would appreciate receiving them. I would love to hear you comments on the Butler County page. Our researchers list is still growing and I am receiving more and more requests for information on "our" county. As a last note, I would like to invite you to read a short story I wrote entitled The Open Gate©. It is the story of a Butler County 20th century businessman who finds himself fighting the Battle of Vicksburg in 1863. The story tells of his trials in attempting to return his present day home in Butler County. The man's name is Martin Jackson, a southern fighting with the 77th Ilinois Infantry. A fictional story, I have learned that there was a southerner named Martin Jackson who actually fought with the 77th. There was a real M. Jackson from Butler County who fought in the Civil War. The end of the story has an ununusal twist to it... a genealogical ending. For those research genealogy and like to read things about the Civil War, here is something a little different. The character in this story, Martin Jackson, is totally fictitious. However, I have learned that there was a Martin Jackson who actually served with the 77th Illinois Infantry and did fight at Vicksburg. There were also several men named Martin Jackson who lived in the south but fought for the Union. Likewise, there were several men by this name who fought for the Confederacy. The Open Gate © A short story of a modern business man from Butler County, AL who is transported back in time to fight at the Seige of Vicksburg, and the trials he encounters while trying to find his way home.
