    1. [ALGEN-L] Y2K
    2. Tim Stowell
    3. Speaking with Brian this evening and asking him about Rootsweb's situation regarding the changeover tomorrow night: Brian says: "RootsWeb believes it is fully ready for Y2K (modulo trivial problems). HOWEVER, We believe there is some chance that parts or all of RootsWeb may be temporarily unavailable because of difficulties elsewhere on The Net. We will do everything in our power to work around any problems other sites or backbone Net carriers have." Also please be aware that some systems who house USGW pages (non-Rootsweb) are going to be turned off intentionally for the date rollover. How long this will be for is anyone's guess. As of now the Indiana state page is down for unknown reasons but this may be the case of working on the date rollover. If so, I'm sure that there will be others. You may wish to pass this along to your CCs. Tim

    1. [ALGEN-L] Alabama Unknown County Queries
    2. Troy McCarley
    3. Good Morning and Happy New Year. The success of the Alabama Unknown County Query page has been Great this year. I have received over 18000 hits, and averaging some 80 to 90 queries a month. It has been a pleasure to post and watch the page grow and hope that it has helped some. I thank all those that placed a reference to my page on there County sites and hope that those who don't have it, can provide a link. http://www.rootsweb.com/~alunknow/index.html If possible please visit and check your County link, I've tried to stay current as you've updated on this list and look forward to posting all the new Queries in the future. 1. [ALGEN-L] Update
    2. This will most likely be the last Butler County update for the year of 1999. The Butler County ALGenWeb site has seen lots of change this year. Among the chances, it saw Barbara Prestridge stepping down as County Coordinator after maintaining the site for two years. Barbara, who did a great job with the site, is now devoting her time to her creation of borders and backgrounds. In June, I accepted the duties as webmaster for the site and the address was changed to a new location with a totally new look. With only 2 more days left in the year, I must say that the past six months has passed rather rapidly. Since that time, the page has once again taken on a different appearance. It is my hope that it will load faster and continue to be easy to use. A page listing the surnames of Butler County Researchers was added. Two new researchers names have been added to our list. The total is now 115 researchers with many, many surnames. A hearty welcome to Chris Farlow and Joyce English. To those on the mailing lists, if you haven't already sent in your request to be added to this surname list, why not do it now. Send me your name, city & state of residence and a list of the names connected to Butler County that you are researching. There have been more than 11,700 visits recorded by the counter on the Butler County web page since June (as of 3am this date). That is an average of almost 2000 per month. Since the site originally came online, an estimated 32, 500 visitors have accessed information for Butler County. I am sure that some were left unaccounted for during the transition period. While some sites report more visitors in a single year, the number isn't too bad for a single genealogy site. With a little luck, perhaps we can double this by the end of next year. Butler County has an excellent mailing list. There are 200 registered members for the ALButler list and 78 registered members for the ALButler digest. A page was linked to the site honoring the 17 men of the 33rd Alabama Volunteers who were killed at Cleveland Tennessee and whose names are on a historical marker at the cemetery there. I would like to have information on those whose names are listed but have no additional information. If you have information on any of these men, their families, the military information, please submit it for addition to the page. In the coming year, I hope to add some new information on the towns and communities that are currently in the county as well as those now gone but not forgotten. Also, it is my hope that more of our researchers will build web sites for their family history so that a link to them information may be linked to the page. And, last but certainly not least, I hope that more photos can be added. The drawback to these goals is that I don't live in Butler County so my resources are limited. A special thanks to Cheryl Sumner, Pamela Kay Anderson, Kirby Phelps, Linda Bratcher McGuire and Lucile Stinson for their contributions of stories and photos. Another thanks to George B. Lewis who has so graciously relayed messages and tracked down to a number persons in Butler County in attempts to obtain permission to reprint information. As a result of these limited resources I would like to ask each of you to help make the Butler County ALGenWeb page an even better one by making a contribution... a photo, a short, a link to your web page. To those on the researcher's surname page, if you have a web site for your genealogy, please send it and I will update your entry to include a link to your page. With this in mind, I would like to wish each of you a healthy and prosperous New Year and the new Millennium. May the year 2000 be better and brighter for each of us. 1. [ALGEN-L] Update from your State Coordinator
    2. Leigh Compton
    3. Hello all, I trust that you are finding time during this Holiday season to relax, visit with friends and family, and maybe even take a short break from the computer. <grin> I'm using some of my time off work to catch up on "things I've put off for too long". One of these is the announcement that Carol Wood (devildragon@inficad.com) has taken over the Marengo County website. She worked closedly with B. J. Smothers during the transition. In fact, they worked so well together that I hardly noticed the transition -- thus my failure to announce that she had joined the ranks of ALGenWeb volunteers. Welcome Carol! We're looking forward to meeting you (online) and getting to know you better. Mary Hudson's mail has been bouncing for several months. Also, her St. Clair site had not been updated since May. So, I'm going to be caretaking a St. Clair site for a while hoping that she will get back online and take it over again. If she doesn't reappear, I'll be looking for a new county coordinator for St. Clair. I've updated a few of the state pages along - adding links to libraries as they come online and other minor updates. What remains to be done is a major overhaul of the "Alabama Families on the Internet". I've got about 30-40 requests for additions in the backlog, and the page is just getting too long to be a single page. I wish all of you a Happy New Year - and an uneventful Y2K! Regards, Leigh

    3. Hi, all, Ronald Bridges sent in another cemetery listing for Coosa Co. Williams, Bullock County ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/bullock/obits/awilliams.txt David W. Morgan also has let me know that the following files have been submitted by some very generous folks. Calhoun County now has Nances Creek Cemetery Submitted by Susan D. Fann susdenfann@aol.com ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/calhoun/cemetery/nancecrk.txt Chambers County now has Old Bethlehem Cemetery ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/chambers/cemetery/oldbeth.txt and the Will of William Clark ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/chambers/wills/c4620001.txt both submitted by Don Clark. Thank you Susan and Don. I am making a change to the obits file. The file has become too big. So, I am creating files by the alphabet (surnames listed alphabetically) and another for the abstracts from newspapers, etc. This will take me a bit of time to finish but I hope soon to have that complete. I will be out of town from Dec. 21 through Jan. 2. I will certainly try to have all files received between now and then uploaded and working. Keep up the good work!!! 3. Folks, Things are really changing around here. We've been fortunate to get volunteers to take over some of the orphaned counties. Please welcome Bill Hocutt <UnkHiram@aol.com> as the CC for Franklin County. Bill lives in TX near me and we share at least one family line from Tuscaloosa County. You may be familiar with the mammoth AL Genealogy site that Bill has built at http://www.angelfire.com/tx2/UncleHiram/AlabamaSites.html Also joining us is Jerry Hare with Russell County. Jerry lives in Russell County, which will come in handy for him in dealing with the local societies and institutions. I think I already introduced Kristy Williams for Montgomery County and Laura Cloud Smith <schmidtm@3-cities.com> for Lee County. Now for the sad news. John Robertson will be giving up Elmore County and Carin Bentley will be leaving as CC of Lawrence County. I really hate to lose these two volunteers, but I do understand the need to move on to other things. Veda Mendoza resigned as Census Project Representative, but Sundee Maynez <raulmaynez@uswest.net> will be taking over the role. And, as announced earlier, there are two new transcriptions up onto the Internet: 1840 Randolph County and 1850 Shelby County. We're in pretty good shape. Carolyn is settling in as the Archives File Manager. By the way, does every county have a link to the Archives TOC page for your county? How about the Census Transcription and Tombstone TOCs? Your visitors will appreciate links that help them find primary data. I've been really quiet lately -- off working on some other projects from time to time. Fortunately, my work-related travel seems to be done for the year (well, maybe a quick trip to Pittsburgh next week) so I'm catching up on ALGenWeb duties. I have a *LOT* of updates to do to the "Alabama Families on the Internet", but otherwise, the rest of the state site seems to be under control. I've gotten several volunteers for Cherokee County and I'm talking with these folks right now. I'll let you know who the new CC is very soon now. Regards, Leigh

    2. Greetings! The Butler County web site has probably been updated for the last time this year. With Christmas so near everyone getting really for the holidays and celebrating with family and friends. With songs of the season in the air, and the colder weather that has blown into Texas, I have placed the Feature of the Month on the web site. It is <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Slope/5940/christma.htm">Christmas</ A>, my Christmas card to you, all of you who have help me develop the Butler County ALGenWeb Site. More than 10,000 visitors have scanned the site and forwarded comments to me or placed them on the guestbook. If you have looked at the guestbook, please do so. There are several people who have left messages regarding their surnames which are not on our list. Perhaps you could help them find some long, lost ancestor. While you're there, how about signing it. I look forward to the New Year and hope that our web site will get bigger and better. With everyone joining together, I know it will. I would also like to reminder everyone that January 31, 2000 (slightly more than a month) is the deadline for submitting articles on your ancestors for publication in the book, Butler County, Heritage of Alabama Series. We want to make this book the best in the series. So, get busy, and send your stories in for publication. Thanks again, and God Bless Each of You. Have a safe and happy holiday. Sharon Buller >sbuller@kumc.edu Sharon: I maintain a list of Genealogical and Historical Societies in Alabama on the ALGenWeb web site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~algenweb/societies.html -- I may have missed one or two societies, but I've tried to get most of them listed and to get current mailing addresses. The Northeast Alabama Genealogy Society has a web site at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/5952/ -- which I have linked to my master list of societies. They have postal and e-mail addresses included on their web site. Regards, Leigh P.S. to all the County Coordinators -- be sure to check my list and send any additions/corrections to me. Also, you should include information about your local society on your county pages.
