    1. [ALGEN-L] WARNING: VIRUS ALERT
    2. I wouldn't normally do this, but I just received for the second time an email from one of our Butler County researchers which contained a bad virus entitled PRETTY PARK.EXE. "C:\CoolProgs\Pretty Park.exe" is the subject line. Within a matter of a few minutes after being downloaded it will send a copy of itself to every person in you address book and will then start to destroy your hard drive. I don't know what else it may do. If you receive a message with the subject shown as "C:\CoolProgs\Pretty Park.exe" DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE FILE. Delete it immediately and notify the person who sent it so that they may get it removed and their computer scanned for the virus. Chances are, the person who sent it to you doesn't even know it was emailed.

I've received input over several weeks from members throughout the Project. I ask that you think of the census project as a whole series of tasks to be completed. >From the time a person volunteers to transcribe a census for a county/parish/borough until it goes on-line for all to view several items must be addressed by coordinators along that path. Perhaps a solution can be found by a division of tasks rather than a merger of projects. Since everyone knows more or less how things are handled now, I'll not go into that here but instead offer the following for your consideration over the next couple of days. I would appreciate feedback as to its workability and palatability. I believe that the tasks involved include: recruiting volunteers, acknowledging their requests to volunteer on a timely basis, assignment of the transcription, maintaining web sites of what's available for transcription and/or status, assisting the volunteer in getting the materials to transcribe and software if need be, answering questions concerning transcriptions, keeping in contact with the volunteers to make sure that the transcription is proceeding without problems, assisting the volunteers in getting the completed transcription uploaded or turned in to the Project, formatting the files for viewing by the public, storing the files, updating web sites to current status of completed transcriptions. There may be other minor jobs but I believe that this list should cover the bulk of the process of getting census material on-line. Therefore please consider breaking down the tasks as follows: USGW Census Project (CP) retains their name, logo and project coordinator: recruits volunteers, acknowledges their requests to volunteer on a timely basis, assigns transcription, maintains their pages to show assigned census, assists volunteers in getting materials, software, answering questions, keeps in contact with volunteers, assists transcribers in getting the materials uploaded, modifies their recruiting web sites that transcription is complete. USGW Archives Census Project (ACP) retains their name, logo and project coordinator: receives completed transcriptions from CP, formats files for viewing, stores files, modifies census on-line web sites to current URL for stored files, contacts appropriate CP file manager with any questions regarding the files. Division of the tasks in this manner allows both projects to continue without duplication of transcriptions, singularity of purpose, increased effectiveness, better service to the transcribers and to the public at large. Working together as a task based mission rather than being divided by personalities would I believe lead to a stronger project in the long run. I would encourage both projects to maintain archived mailing lists of volunteers / transcribers to keep them abreast of news regarding software changes, improvements and to give a FAQs section. As for the volunteers working within each project or in both projects, I would encourage them to volunteer for the task(s) where they feel they could best contribute. Lastly, someone needs to coordinate the process. It doesn't have to be someone with an iron hand but it does need to be someone who thoroughly understands every aspect of the process. It should not be a popularity contest. This person either needs to be appointed or chosen from qualified candidates. Thank you for giving consideration to this proposal of a way to give rebirth to the Census endeavor of the USGenWeb Project. Tim ------- End of forwarded message ------- Regards, Leigh

    1. [ALGEN-L] UPDATE #24
    2. As the month of March nears an end, this will most likely be the last update of the month. A lot of changes have occurred this month. The entire Butler County ALGenWeb site has been drastically overhauled in hopes of making the site a little more time effective. There have been too many new links added, particularly in the Civil War section to name. Also, there have been a number of new links added to the Family Web Sites section. In fact, there have just been too many new links to begin naming them for fear of missing them. Please check out the <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/Canal/8924/index.htm">Butler County, Alabama</A> web site. We have a new researchers listed on the surname list. Welcome John R. Barfield, The Woodlands, TX; Daniel William Carr, Indianapolis, IN; Kimberly Scarbrough, Bullard, TX; Marsha King Grady, Iowa City, IA; and Melinda Brooks Buck, Knoxville, TN. We also have one Lookup Volunteer. Lois has offered to do lookups on the 1850 Butler County Census. Her email address is LEEADAN@aol.com. I have started a list of these volunteers on the page of surnames. Almost everyone now knows that the deadline for the Butler County Heritage Book has been extended once more. The last and final deadline is now June 30, 2000. The rules and updates from the Committee will remain on the Butler site until the deadline is passed. I will continue to post updates when given information. Otherwise, if you have questions, please contact Bernard Lewis at georgeb@alaweb.com. The web site has surpassed 10,000 viewers this year already. It will most likely finish the month out at slightly more than 10,750 hits. The number of hits per month has picked up considerably. This is partially due to all those who have contributed information which has been posted on the site, and to those who have spread the word about our county. Hope I haven't forgotten too much. Happy Hunting! 2. Leigh Compton
    3. Folks: Did you know that you can add an archives search to your county web pages? Yep. It's really quite easy -- just copy the HTML that you see on the Lunenberg County, VA, web pages and modify to have AL and your county instead of VA and Lunenberg. I'm going to put this up on the state page with a pull-down to search across individual counties as well as all counties. ------- Forwarded message follows ------- Date forwarded: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 15:09:38 -0800 (PST) Date sent: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 18:09:11 -0500 From: Linda Lewis <cityslic@ix.netcom.com> Subject: [STATE-COORD-L] Customized USGW Archives Search To: STATE-COORD-L@rootsweb.com Forwarded by: STATE-COORD-L@rootsweb.com Send reply to: STATE-COORD-L@rootsweb.com For a customized search engine on your page, no matter which server it's located on, you can copy the coding I have on the Lunenburg VA toc (table of contents) of the USGenWeb Archives: (script is at the bottom) http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/va/lunenbur.htm Just replace the appropriate things: "/va" with your state abbreviation "/va/lunenburg" with state/county "/va/lunenburg/cemeteries" with appropriate state/county/directory "/va/lunenburg/census" with same appropriate This will search your county's files located in the Archives and provide another helpful tool to your visitors. Within these files were abstracts of obituaries from the Florence Times Daily newspaper. These files covered the years 1988 through 1998. I have had to spend some time converting them to .txt files, but it is worth it. The files that have been uploaded so far are 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1995. I will keep working on these until they are all uploaded. I can only imagine how much time Robert must have spent on these. I am just very sorry it has taken me so long to get these up and going. 2. Leigh Compton
    3. To the Coffee & Marion County CCs: Please note that the actual images from these US Census films for your counties are now online. You'll want to make notice on your county sites and also notify the subscribers of the relevant county mailing lists. To all other CCs: You might take a quick look at the USGenWeb Archives and Census Project pages to see what census data is online for your county. Some counties have images online, others have transcripts. The images are particularly valuable since people can now view them online instead of travelling to the library and scanning the microfilm. 1. [ALGEN-L] UPDATE #21
    2. We have a new story to go with the 1910 photo of the Georgiana Methodist Church. Thanks to Margie Kinney-Butler of Nacogdoches, TX who retyped the article written in 1946 by Rev. Franklin Shackford Moseley. The article was originally printed in the Butler County News then reprinted in the Butler County Genealogical & Historical Society newsletters. Thanks to the BCG&HS for giving permission to place it on our web site. The Researcher's Surname list has also been updated. Welcome Susie Scofield, Gastonia, NC; Frances P. Smith, Fort Payne, AL; Teresa Gaines, Cincinnati, OH; and Cassandra Harrison, Akron, OH to the list. Also a new surname has been added to those of Ed Godbold of Montgomery, AL. I wish to share you a comment left on the guestbook by Joe Sellers (JOSellers@home.com) of Reisterstown, MD, who is researching the Sellers family. Joe wrote: "The Butler County website is the best of it's kind, honest! You actually have material here that can be researched! It's obvious that a lot of time and personal effort went into this site. It is a pleasure to visit your site!" The reason I wanted to share it is because it shows that those of you who have made contributions to the page are appreciated. Your efforts and diligence in trying to preserve our Butler County Heritage have not gone unnoticed. This is but one of the comments I have received regarding your work. Thanks for helping make Butler County one of the best, if not the well researched county in the state. A reminder that if you have a web site that is linked to Butler County, please let me know so I can add a link to it. Or if you find one, let me know. I try to check for new ones at least once a month, but it isn't hard to miss some of them. Also, a reminder that the deadline for article and photo submission for the Butler Heritage Book is just 2 weeks off. If you want to submit something, please get it in the mail. Thanks everyone. 3. Folks: If it seems like your hard work is unappreciated and people are only complaining, here's the other side. I just received this note of thanks. I only wish I was the one who had put together the Alabama Marriage Records. Researchers notice your hard work. 3. Ed, Thanks for the 'at at girl.' But, I wanted you to know that each county's available information is different because of the volunteers who do the work. What is available on the ALGenWeb is there because people like you and me transcribed wills, Bible records, walked cemeteries and so on. What is there is only because someone contributed it. Poor Covington County has not had the hard workers that Escambia County has had. I wish it were otherwise. I would love to be able to contribute more but, you see, I live in Minnesota. So, I cannot walk the cemeteries or go to the court house. Still, I am very glad you have been able to get so much from the archives. That is their purpose. I will pass along your messsage to the others who help maintain these sites. 2. Please pardon the first attempt at sending this. My server got a touch of itchy fingers and in trying to speed things up, I click the send button too soon. Two months of the new Millennium have come and gone. It has been a fast eight weeks for the Butler County researchers. As the counter rolled over for the beginning of March showing a total of 3950 visits to the web page. Twenty new researchers have been added to the surname list. Kay Anderson has finished her contribution of the complete 1860 Butler County census. It is now online. Thanks Kay for the many eye strains, sore fingers, and hours of proofing to get this to us. It is much appreciated. A link had been added to the Butler County portion of Duke Vickery's Reconstructed 1884 Map of Butler Land Records. This will give a listing of property owners at that time and offers and excellant map of the county. Another reminder about the Heritage Book. March 31st is only 4 weeks away. Please check the update message on the web site for the latest information. If you have photos of your military veterans and wish to contribute photos of them in uniform, the information is found on the update. Also information for submitting 50th Anniversary photos. I hope I'm not forgetting anything. There are a few new things already lined up for March so it is off to a good start. The main page is getting so large that I may have to add buttons for the various sections. I am still trying to keep as much on the main page without having to go to so many different pages to access infromation but many not be able to do that much longer. If you have suggests, please drop me a line and let me have them. Thanks for all the hard work that every one is doing. 1. [ALGEN-L] UPDATE #18
    2. Thanks to Norma Williamson of Red Level, AL, there are a few listings of burials in Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery and Spring Creek Cemetery. She has also added a few names to the list at Ebenezer East. I have, where possible, added a map to the cemetery pages. While the map doesn't show county roads, it will give you a general area of where the cemetery is located. Several new links have been added: 1. Index to Butler County Cemeteries (partial provided by USGS) 2. Index to Alabama Cemeteries 3. Marriage Index: Brides 4. Marriage Index: Grooms 5. Marriage Index: Unknown Spouses Keep the information coming. Just be patient if it takes a little longer to get it online than expected. Happy Hunting!
