Hi, I am sending the link for Georgia's logo's. I think they are beautiful. Their state logs includes the outline of the state with the state flower and bird. They also have some backgrounds. I wish I was a graphics whiz. Sorry can only share what I think is really great logos. Good Morning Everyone, My curiosity was aroused this morning and I wondered what the other CCs were using as the 'masthead' to their home pages. So, I got a mug of coffee, and ran my own little survey. Although I did let the main pages load fully, I did not scroll down the page, so if you have one of the things listed below further down your page, I did not see it. For what it's worth, I found the following: 33 use AlGenWeb + the 'original' map of the state with the county colored/highlighted 14 use only the 'original' map 5 use the 'logo' as seen on the state page, in some form or other, plus the 'original' map 1 uses the 'logo' only 14 use none of the above Personally, I like AlGenWeb + the 'original' map. It loads rapidly, is simple, and can be used without putting a damper on individual web design. [Actually, I thought this was the logo as decided on in 1996, and what is on the state page was the SC's 'version'. Guess my memory is faulty - again. <grin>] Pat M. Dear ALGenWeb Genealogists: Nearly all of us agree that the logo for ALGenWeb nears a few revisions and some modernization. I am inclined to believe that more of the county coordinators would use the logo on their page if it were more appealing. So, I propose a contest to come up with a new logo. I'll even donate a temporary page to post the designs so that everyone can see them. <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/butlercounty/contest.htm">ALGenWeb Logo Contest </A> A period of 30 days should be sufficient for everyone to submit their design. I will post them as they are forwarded to me. Once all have been posted everyone will have an opportunity to cast a vote for the design of their choice. Please send designs in JPG or GIF formats. For posting, please try to keep them under 300x300 pixels for purposes of uniform size and display. Okay, genealogists, here's a chance to do ALGenWeb proud. I will send personal notes for any serious problems rather than post them here. Observations: * only 3 counties are missing the USGenWeb logo graphic * 5 counties have the name of the USGenWeb Project listed as "U.S. GenWeb" instead of "USGenWeb Project". The trademark holder of "GenWeb" has asked the USGenWeb Project not to use that term (GenWeb) by itself. * Almost every county site had been updated within 2 months. CONGRATULATIONS on keeping your sites current * Only a few sites were missing a method of collecting queries * There were a couple of pages that were just too large to load and a couple of broken/missing graphics, but overall the pages look good * There's no consistent format or even an identifying logo for ALGenWeb on most of the pages. This isn't required, but is certainly recommended. The most serious "flaw" was that over half of the county pages has a wrong e-mail address for the State Coordinator (ie. me). The correct address is either "elsi@augustmail.com" or even better "al@usgenweb.org" -- if you use the usgenweb address, then when the next State Coordinator comes aboard, all you'll have to do is change the name but not the address. Believe it or not, I still get some mail through the usgenweb.org address which is addressed to "Richard". I'll get individual notes off as soon as I can. Thank you everyone for all that you do. Regards, Leigh
Hello everyone, After getting some comments on specific counties, I decided to survey all the county sites and see how they "stack up" in terms of complying with the USGenWeb requirements and how recently they've been updated. I was looking for the following: 1) USGenWeb logo on the front page and a link to the USGenWeb Project home page 2) Link to the ALGenWeb home page 3) Contact information for the county coordinator (could be e-mail address or a feedback form) 4) E-mail address of the state coordinator (that's me!) 5) Provision for submitting and viewing queries Regards, Leigh USGenWeb State Coordinator, Alabama

If consistent format means turning the main page into a table, no thanks. The ALGenWeb sign (logo?) is ugly. Surely there is an artist that could create a nice logo for ALGenWeb, such as an outline of the state, with the words ALGenWeb Project across it. Some states even have contests, and vote on what they consider to be the best logo. > The most serious "flaw" was that over half of the county pages has a wrong > e-mail address for the State Coordinator (ie. me). My computer is a Hewlitt-Packard. I get a newsletter from HP quite frequently, and generally it is wanting to sell me something. I was surprised tonight to find a story on genealogy. Well, we're making progress. Marcus Thomas will be taking over DeKalb County from Jack Brooks. And, I've put a new page online with information on newspapers in Alabama. The page on the state site only has links to newspapers which have a web site. However, the Alabama Press Association lists each and every newspaper in the state. I'd recommend that each of you check out the Alabama Press Association web site at http://www.alabamapress.org/ and find the names and mailing addresses for all the newspapers within your county. Hello all, There have been some changes lately and I thought everyone would like to meet some of our new volunteers. I'd like to introduce David Hogan <davidhogan@leedsalabama.com> who has agreed to help with web layout and design. I've asked him to help with a "make-over" of the state site. David will also be maintaining the "Alabama Families on the Internet" links. Travis Hardin <travishardin@mindspring.com> will be taking over as CC for Cherokee County. I don't remember if I announced Carol Wood as County Coordinator for Marengo County. She had been working as Assistant CC with B.J. Smothers and had been doing much of the web maintenance before taking over as CC. Sandra Davis-Johnson has resigned as CC for Sumter County. I've listed the county as available for adoption. Sandy will turn over the web account on RootsWeb, so the new CC will have all the pages and data that is already there as a basis for rebuilding the site. Fortunately, Sandy will continue to coordinate the African American site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~alaag/ Carin Bentley resigned as CC for Lawrence County, and Betty McCulloch <lacey2@bellsouth.net> has stepped right in. Lygia Cutts has had to resign as CC for Escambia and Connecuh counties. If anyone is interested or knows of someone interested in adopting and hosting either one of these counties, please contact Lygia at Cuttstree@Net1inc.net Also, John Roberson needs someone to take over Elmore County. He's continuing to tend the web pages, but would really like for a new County Coordinator to come forward. Joanna Carrell <carrell@bellsouth.net> has resigned as CC for Pickens & Jefferson Counties. I'll be listing them as adoptable along with the others awaiting a coordinator. There's a lot of opportunity for new volunteers to get involved with ALGenWeb and USGenWeb. Regards, Leigh USGenWeb State Coordinator, Alabama
Hi to all, I have been working on the archives in bits and pieces. This move to Colorado is going to do me in. We actually move the first and second week of June. So, I work as often as I can. I have done updates just haven't sent in the addresses to this list. I also had an accident on Apr. 21st and cut my left index finger requiring several stitches inside and out. I am not able to be typing for another few days unless I hunt and peck with one hand. So, things are backing up again. I intend to work as long as it doesn't hurt much. Seems like one thing or another. I keep on trying. Hope all had a good Easter weekend. Carolyn Golowka ALGenWeb Archives File Manager
Hi, Some of the AlGenWeb County webmasters may have the link to the Heritage of Alabama book series as <http://www.bham.mindspring.com/~awillcut/heritage.htm>. This URL no longer works. Greetings to all, I was just benn sent an email regarding a petition online that is making an effort to <A HREF="http://adforce.imgis.com/?adiframe|2.0|2|29042|1|1|ADFORCE;">Save Our Southern Heritage</A> (http://www.petitiononline.com/southern/petition.html). I read it, and signed it. I normally would not send political motivated information through this mailing list. But I strongly feel that this issue affects all of us. The monuments, memorials and grave sites of our ancestors who fought in the Civil War are being destroyed by vandals and special interest groups. It will continue unless Congress puts a stop to it. My grandfathers fought in the Army of the Confederate States of America during that time. They may have fought because they believed in the cause. They may have fought just because it was their land they were defending. Whatever the reason, they fought. Some died on Southern soil. Some died on Union soil in Northern prison camps. Regardless of their reason for their being in the war, I am proud to say that my grandfathers were there, making history. Whether right or wrong, the war is over. It has been for 135 years. The scars of the battle have been covered by moss, trees, grass, and other ground cover. Why can't we, as Americans, let the scars of history also heal? I encourage each of you to read this petition. Whether you sign it or not, that is your choice. Mildred Stinson Brown My Civil War Ancestors: Leander Stinson, CSA, died in Elmira Prison, NY John A.
