    1. [ALGEN-L] Proposed amendment to bylaws
    2. Elsi
    3. At the request of a County Coordinator, I am putting this proposed amendment to the USGenWeb bylaws to a vote of the AL county coordinators. In order for an amendment to appear on the USGenWeb ballot in July, 5 states must sponsor it. Maryland submitted it and it is being put to a vote in several other states. You are being asked to vote for or against placing a proposed amendment on the ballot for the USGenWeb general election in July 2000. Voting *for* placing the amendment on the ballot does not imply that you necessarily favor the amendment, just that you would like to see it put to a vote of the USGenWeb membership. A simple majority of the Alabama CCs voting will constitute sponsorship or lack of sponsorship of this amendment by the state project. To vote, go to http://tx-1.rootsweb.com/~elsi/vote-al-1.html (For AOL users, the clickable link is <a href="http://tx-1.rootsweb.com/~elsi/vote-al-1.html">http://tx-1.rootsweb.co m/~elsi/vote-al-1.html</a>) Voting commences immediately and will run until 12:30am (Alabama time, CDT) Tuesday, 13 June. If you vote more than once, your last vote will be the only one counted. Each CC and Asst. CC (or Co-CC) will be accorded one vote, regardless of how many counties he or she sponsors. David Morgan has agreed to help count the votes, so a copy of your vote will be sent to David as well as to me. If you are subscribed to any of the USGenWeb mailing lists or if you've taken a look at the USGenWeb project business pages lately, you may be aware that there are other proposed amendments. I'll put any of these to a vote upon nomination by an Alabama CC. 3. David Morgan has recruited Lynda Eller as co-County Coordinator for Chambers County. Lynda <deller@mindspring.com> lives in Chambers County and maintains quite a library about Chambers and Randolph counties (among others). She's been helping David for a long time, and we're really glad that she'll be taking on a more visible role in ALGenWeb. Barbara Dore <rootslady@email.msn.com> has adopted Escambia and Baldwin counties. This now means that there is only one county (Crenshaw) that doesn't have a permanent caretaker. Regards, Leigh

I know that this may be a long shot, but that's about all I have left! A few years back, we'd been subscribing to the Talladega County Historical Association Newsletter. It stopped coming 1997; we received our last issue in April 1997. I've been trying to find out what happened to it since--whether it's stopped publishing, whether we inadvertently got removed from the mailing list, etc. However, I've been meeting dead ends. When I tried to call the Talladega County Historical Association, I was told that my "call could not be completed as dialled." Do you happen to know how I could contact the Talladega County Historical Association? Do they have a current e-mail address or telephone number? Are they still in existence? If you have any information on the historical association (or the newsletter), it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help. Angela Fox Allen County Public Library Genealogy Periodicals P. 3. Just in ... St. Clair County will now be hosted by Rev. John Evans Pace, III <Evangail49@aol.com> who lives in Talladega. I've sent him everything he needs to get started and subscribed him to this list. He may be asking for help on occasion, but I know you guys will all be willing to answer questions. We've got such a good group of volunteers. Maggie Stewart <73777.25@compuserve.com> has agreed to care for Elmore County. I really hate to see John Robertson go, but he's been really good to keep the county pages up while waiting for a new County Coordinator. Betsy Mills <betsym@1starnet.com> will be working on Pickens County. As you may remember, Jo Carrell was maintaining this site along with Jefferson County. We'll miss her too. I don't know how your weekend and Memorial Day has gone, but mine has been wonderful. I've taken care of some needed housecleaning (on my computer, not for real) and added some information to the ALGenWeb site. There's more to be done - isn't there always? - but I'm making progress. I've more information to pass on to you guys about the USGenWeb annual elections, but that's for another note. Regards, Leigh

    1. [ALGEN-L] New County Coordinators
    2. Elsi
    3. It's been a couple of weeks since I last wrote, and we've had a few more volunteers come forward. Sherry Ledlow <SLLedlow@aol.com> is taking the reins as the County Coordinator for Jefferson County. This was a very popular county and I've had to disappoint 4 other people who have volunteered. I'm sending their names to Sherry and hoping that she can use their help in putting as much information online as possible. Marcus Thomas <mctlrt@erols.com> has just about completed the move of DeKalb County web pages to their new location. With the help of the former CC, Jack Brooks, this has gone quite smoothly. Kristy Williams <KDWIAM@Email.MSN.Com>, who is CC for Montgomery County, has volunteered for Sumter County. Once she gets the passwords to the web space at RootsWeb, she'll be updating those pages. And, it appears that I failed to let everyone know that Earl Johnson has taken over as CC in Colbert County. Earl worked as co-CC with Mary Hudson for quite a while and she handed off to him in February. I apologize for not posting this change and for taking so long to get the right name listed on our County index page. It looks to me like the following counties still do not have coordinators: Connecuh Crenshaw Elmore Escambia Pickens Saint Clair If I've made any other mistakes, please let me know. Regards, Leigh

    2. Elsi
    3. Folks, I've been using two different computers since the first of the year and I'm trying to reconcile the e-mail on both of them. I've lost track of which of the volunteer forms have been forwarded to you, so you may be getting a duplicate e-mail from me today. At any rate, some of you will be receiving copies of volunteer forms which were posted at the ALGenWeb state site. Please follow up with these volunteers and put them to work. You'll want to make sure that they've read the guidelines for lookups - then list their e-mail addresses on your county web page. Of course, if you can talk them into doing other things like transcribing original records or donating data, then go for it! Regards, Leigh

    3. Hi, I just wanted you to know that Penny Dodd has sent me a new text version of her 1850 transcript for Chambers County. The version on Lisa Franklin's web site was somehow corrupted and only about 93 kb of a 900 kb census is there. I am uploading to ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/chambers/census/1850/ The first two complete files are 1850cen1.txt and 1850cen2.txt. I am breaking the files Penny is sending me into 100 kb chunks. I will try to have this finished today, then will link the Chambers county web site to it instead of to Lisa's page. Penny is trying to contact Lisa too, to get it updated on her page. David dmorgan@efn.org David W. The election committee is 5-10 people who will oversee this years elections: receive nominations for the advisory board, contact the nominees and determine if they are willing to serve, and supervise the voting. In the past, Tim Pierce has run automated voting software on his personal server. There has been some criticism of this since Tim is an employee of RootsWeb, so the election committee may investigate an alternative way of casting ballots and tallying the results. I'm not sure what plans have been made for voting this year. Regards, Leigh Regards, Leigh
