Hey everyone, While I was browsing around today, I came across 1895 maps for all counties in AL. I would love to have a full state map that shows the original boundaries of the 10 original counties but has each current county as clickable to the appropiate ALGenWeb page! As for Lee County, guess I should put this info on my webpage :-) Sorry...... Lee County was created by the Alabama legislature on December 5, 1866 . It was named for Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The county lies on the eastern part of the Black Belt. It is bordered by Chambers, Tallapoosa, Macon, and Russell counties, and on the east by the Chattahoochee River and the State of Georgia. The county seat is located at Opelika, which in the Creek Indian language means "big swamp." Other towns and communities include Loachapoka and Auburn, the site of Auburn University. I sure hope you find a volunteer that can make a clickable map. What I would like to have is a map of the 10 counties that were created on 18 December 1832 by the legislature, plus the counties that were formed from the original 10. Clay was created from Talladega and I think Lee was formed from Chambers. These 10 counties were created from the Creek Nation for the most part, but some from the Cherokee Nation. My biggest problem is trying to figure which counties in Georgia are next to my county in Alabama. Ok, I figured out that Troup and Harris in GA are neighbors of Chambers in AL, but a map sure would make it easier. David dmorgan@efn.org David W. Have any of the CC's heard of this Plantation before? Plantation was near Selma and named Suttles
I have filed a complaint with the Iowa Consumer Protection which is in the Iowa Attorney General's office. I asked that they accept my email as a formal complaint since this firm has the potential to harm many in a short period of time. Their email address is consumer@ag.state.ia.us <consumer@ag.state.ia.us> Please write to them and let them know what is going on. So prompt action can be taken. I have also sent this request to all the lists I am on. I'm hoping to stir up some discussion as to what makes a county site "high quality" as opposed to "low quality". I think there are several criteria that can be used: 1) Information to be found 2) Ease of use 3) Appearance And probably some that I haven't even considered. This note is going to focus on *INFORMATION*. Our USGenWeb charter gives minimum requirements for county web sites: * Display the USGenWeb logo * Provide a link to the state and national home pages * Provide a means for collecting and displaying queries * Basic research help which might include lookups In Alabama, there are some additional items, stated as "suggested elements": * ALGenWeb logo * "Yahoo-like" navigational line * Signature including links to ALGenWeb and USGenWeb home pages, and how to contact you. Fortunately, most county pages go well beyond the minimum requirements. There are some that do not. I want to encourage everyone to move their sites well beyond the minimums in the next 12 months. If you don't live in or near the county you're hosting, then recruit some help from folks nearby. Let's strive to put some real data onto our pages, not just links. And don't overlook the obvious data: * Where's the courthouse located? Give the address and maybe a phone number. You can find this on the web, so look it up and add it to your "front page". * What census records cover this county? If your county was created in 1866, be sure to mention the parent county or counties for holding the census records of the area. * What books have been published with genealogical information in them? Use the online card catalogs to search for books having to do with your county. If you haven't seen it yet, check out the Alabama Public Library Service home page at http://www.apls.state.al.us/ and follow the link to the APLS Online Catalog which will allow you to search the combined card catalog of many local libraries all at once. * Speaking of libraries, which ones are located in your county? The library doesn't have to be online for you to list it on your web page. Some folks still do genealogical research the hard way, so give the location, mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address if you can find it. If there's a web site for the library, so much the better. You also might consider writing a letter (you know -- those things with stamps) to the librarian asking for a listing of the genealogical holdings in the library. * Where is the nearest LDS library located? You can look that up at the LDS web site at http://www.familysearch.org/ -- follow the link to Custom Search. * What genealogical societies are there? Give the mailing address of the society. Find out the meeting location(s) and time(s) and post that on your site. Consider *JOINING* the society so you'll get their newsletter. If you don't live nearby, you might find a willing helper in the local society. * What newspapers are there in your county? Did you know that *LOTS* of the small papers are now online? You might include a link to the paper's obituary column. At the very least, include the name of today's papers with a mailing address and phone number. If you can find out the names of papers which *USED* to operate in the county, so much the better. Check at the State of Alabama Archives and both Auburn and Univ. of Alabama libraries to see what newpapers they have on microfilm. The next thing I want you to do is to make sure that you provide a link to the USGenWeb Archives records for your county. You should provide a link to the county index page at the very minimum. You can also provide links to any of the files in the archives as you wish. You need links to the adjacent counties. ALL the adjacent counties. Brian Davis made the small maps that many of us are using to indicate where our county is located within the state. I'm going to be recruiting someone to make customized clickable maps for those that want to use them. If you've got skills here and access to a graphic of the state and its counties, please let me know if you're willing to take this on. Then it's time to do some searching online for information that folks who are not part of our project have put online. Make liberal use of Cyndi's List (http://www.cyndislist.com), Amelia Willcutt's Alabama Genealogy (http://www.mindspring.com/~awillcut/home.html) and Lisa Franklin's Tracking Your Alabama Roots (http://home.att.net/~TrackingYourRoots/tyralachart.htm). I'm taking this challenge, too. I have 3 county sites which need a once-over. I mentioned in my previous note that Betty McCulloch will be focusing on web site quality. I'm asking her to check each county site for all of the mandatory items and to make sure that the county coordinator can be contacted. Any coordinators who do not respond within a reasonable period of time may wind up being replaced. I'm thinking 3 weeks is reasonable, but if you don't agree, let me know right away <grin>. That's it for now. I'm really looking for input on "quality". Regards, Leigh
Well, the USGenWeb elections are now over and the newly elected National Coordinator and Advisory Board are working to improve the election process for next year as well as reviewing out national bylaws. If this is of interest to you, please subscribe to one of the national mailing lists: USGENWEB-ALL-L@rootsweb.com USGW-CC-L@usgennet.org Some more "personnel changes" as volunteers join and leave the Alabama project: Mildred Stinson Brown has resigned as County Coordinator for Butler County. She has asked her Asst. CC, Karen Diard, to take over. I haven't received any notes from either Mildred or Karen to let me know that the transfer has taken place. Kristy Williams is now the CC of Monroe County (as well as Montgomery and Sumter counties), taking the reins from Cindy McCoy. We'll miss Cindy, but thank her for the hard work she put into the county for the 18 months that she was the CC. Sandra Lutz is resigning as CC for Choctaw County. She has a terrific helper, Sarah Mozingo, who has single-handedly researched all of the cemeteries online at the county site. Sarah may be taking over as CC, but she'll be looking for a co-CC who has strong HTML skills since the webmastering stuff is new to her. Some sad news. I've been informed that Carol Middleton has become gravely ill and will not be able to continue as CC for Mobile County. Carol was also webmistress of the very popular Alabama Marriage Indexes and Heritage of the South (Among the Creeks, French Colonials of the Gulf Coast, Herstories and Histories, and Pioneers to the Southwest) websites. My prayers are with Carol and her family at this time. It looks like I've got a good volunteer for Crenshaw County. Watch for further information very soon. I have one more very BIG announcement to make. I've asked Betty McCulloch <lacey2@ispchannel.com> to serve as an Assistant State Coordinator. Betty is CC for Lawrence County. For her first project, I want her to focus on "quality control" for our county pages. I'm sending out another note on "quality" and I'd like to see a lot of discussion on this topic over the next couple of weeks. I think we all have a lot of input on what makes for a County site which users will want to return to over and over again. Betty will be contacting you with a short questionnaire, please cooperate with her. Regards, Leigh

Leigh, Do you have any suggestions as to what to do about commercial companies linking to our free pages? This particular company is linked to a lot of AL sites - including rootsweb archives, which plainly states that it is a free site! For those that may be interested, the following URL, which was posted on USGW-CCL, will take you to the site to see just what is linked to. http://www.familydiscovery.com/Records/states/pennsylvania.htm Substitute pennsylvania for whatever state you are interested in. We are thrilled with the overwhelming positive feedback we have received. I would like to take this opportunity to assure the USGenWeb Board and Members of MyFamily.com's desire to continue our support of your project. And in response to some of your questions, we will make the following pledges to the USGenWeb Project: * MyFamily will continue to support the USGenWeb Project with free, unlimited server space. * MyFamily will not place advertising banners on USGenWeb Project pages without the express permission of the page creator. * MyFamily will never charge for access to any USGenWeb data, nor will we use it in any way other than its current use, without the express permission of the contributor and/or the Project. * The USGenWeb.org and USGenWeb.net domains will be transfered to The USGenWeb Project. We have been working with Tim Stowell, the National Coordinator, to ensure a swift transfer. * MyFamily will continue to strive towards open communication with the Board and Members of the USGenWeb Project. On a related subject, I want to reassure you that all of the current RootsWeb features, including mailing lists, message boards, user databases, and WorldConnect GEDCOMs, will continue to be FREE. And while we will no longer solicit financial contributions, we will continue to honor all commitments to current contributors for tagline-free mailing lists, banner-free home pages, use of Personalized Mailing Lists (PML), vanity domains, etc. We appreciate your on-going support of RootsWeb, and look forward to a long relationship. Sincerely, Curt Allen Chairman of the Board MyFamily.com, Inc.

Finally, I have been able to upload new files and correct TOC's that were missing links to files already in the archives. It has been a pretty busy 2 months with moving and trying to get my computer and server here to work. Had to get a new server for me because my old one didn't work here. So, on to the work. Leon Weekley contributed the transcription of his grandfather's Bible, Thomas A. Quinley for Baldwin County. ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/baldwin/bible/quinley.txt Robert Torbert contributed Abstracts Obits Abstracted From Florence Times Daily Newspaper - Florence, Lauderdale Co., AL. He sent this last November, but it takes me literally hours to translate these files into .txt. Nearly done, though. And they contain thousands of names. Very worthwhile. ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/lauderdale/obits/o96.txt Linda Raybon has contributed a survey for the Round Hill Cemetery in Clarke County. ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/clarke/cemetery/rndhill.txt and Bassett Creek Cemetery, Clarke County ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/clarke/cemetery/bassettcrk.txt Letty Harrington contributed the Russell Cemetery survey for Marshall county. This cemetery is now underwater! ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/marshall/cemetery/russell.txt Ronald Bridges has once again contributed to the archives. This is one busy man!
