    3. Hello people: I have just been visiting Lisa Franklin's excellent site, "Tracking Your Alabama Roots", at http://members.aol.com/GenWeb/Lisa/tyralachart.htm Like many of you, I have links to her county query pages, and I just discovered that ALL of her query site is down with the exception of archived 1996 and 1997 queries which are downloadable .zip files. Lisa's main page says that she is busy archiving the 1998 queries and will reopen her query forms as soon as she can. In the meantime, it appears that some of the counties are relying SOLELY on Lisa's query pages to fulfill the USGenWeb requirement to provide access to queries. This situation with Lisa's site unable to accept queries exposes the risk associated with relying on an individual web master to provide the query support for our counties. Therefore, it is imperative that County Coordinators set up a query system that you control. You may use any of the available bulletin board/guest book systems such as GuestWorld <http://www.GuestWorld.com> and Piett's Guestbook <http://www.piett.com/pgb/index.html>. You are also welcome to use any forms which your web site provider supports. GeoCities has a forms utility, as do many of the private ISPs. For those of you with County pages on RootsWeb, the forms routine is called MailMerge. GenConnect <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/> and Query Express <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/qexpress/> are two systems set up specifically for USGenWeb County Coordinators. There are other options such as manually collecting and posting the queries from an e-mail link on your county page. If you would like a system to organize the queries, take a look at CCHelper <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cchelper>. For more information and some examples, the TXGenWeb folks have a nice page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~txgenweb/queryop.html This is a very important change which needs to be made to some, though not all of the county pages. Please make every attempt to have this in place by 1 March. If you cannot meet this deadline, feel free to contact me about this. Regards, Leigh

    3. People: A reminder about the Alabama Department of Archives and History. Their web server address has changed. Please update all your links. Every place you have http://www.asc.edu/archives/ change it to http://www.archives.state.al.us/ It's simple to do for not only the main page, but any of the lower level pages. Thus, http://www.asc.edu/archives/referenc/pcount2.html#cleburne becomes http://www.archives.state.al.us/referenc/pcount2.html#cleburne Mark wrote me earlier this week reminding me that the links on the state page had not been updated. I responded and promised to get them corrected immediately, and he responded with this note which I wanted to share with you. Ya'll have some nice pages. We are compliing a master list of county genealogical and historical societies state-wide that includes all pertinent links. I'll let you know when it goes online. 3. This was shared with me and I thought it was cute and worth sharing with others! Enjoy!!! Redneck Family Tree Many many years ago when I was twenty three, I got married to a widow who was pretty as could be. This widow had a daughter Who had hair of red. My father fell in love with her. And soon the two were wed. This made my dad my son-in-law And changed my very life. My daughter was my mother. For she was my father's wife. To complicate the matters worse. Although it brought me joy. I soon became the father Of a bouncing baby boy. My little baby then became A brother-in-law to dad. And so became my uncle. Thought it made me very sad. For if he was my uncle, Then that also made him brother To the widow's grown-up daughter Who, of course, was my step-mother. Father's wife then had a son, Who kept them on the run. And he became my grandson. For he was my daughter's son. My wife is now my mother's mom And it surely makes me blue. Because, although she is my wife, She is my grandma too. If my wife is my grandmother, Then I am her grandchild. And every time I think of it, It simply drives me wild. For now I have become The strangest case you ever saw. As the husbond of my grandmother. I am my own grandpa! 3. This is wrong-headed and the proposal is an insult to every ADULT who is or will be part of this project. I'd even help y'all do that. B.J. Smothers

    3. Subject: [BOARD-L] Motion Made and Seconded Resent-Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 10:27:36 -0800 (PST) Resent-From: BOARD-L@rootsweb.com Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 13:40:10 -0500 From: "Beth Wills" <bwills@ionia-mi.net> A motion has been made by Yvonne and seconded by Kay and Ginger that a Standards and Ethics Statement be drafted and put into the USGenWeb Project policy for protection of said project. This statement will now be posted to the required mailing lists as well as the national web page for 48 hours as required by Article VIII, Section 3 of the USGenWeb Project Bylaws before I call for a vote. I will call for a vote on this motion AFTER 1:30 p.m. EST on Sunday, Jan 24, 1999 ****************** A copy of the proposed statement follows: A set of standards and code of ethics for a project provide a framework for personal relationships. No where are these more important than a totally volunteer project. The absence of a written statement specifying standards of conduct and project ethics leaves each individual to interpret their actions as reasonable and/or ethical. While this certainly allows for the greatest range of individualism, it also lends itself to behaviors or actions that the majority may consider inappropriate or unethical. The standards and code of ethics is broad based, and establishes a clear definition of what behavior is acceptable for the well-being of the project, while allowing for the varied talents and abilities of individuals. The standards and code of ethics provides a means by which actions and behaviors can be determined to be either acceptable or unacceptable. They also establish accountability for those actions or behaviors that are found to be unacceptable. The county, state and special project coordinators will be held to the following standards: 1. The best interests of the project will be at the forefront of any actions by a coordinator that involve the project. No county, state or special project coordinator will post derogatory comments about the project. Problems that arise within the project will be kept at the project level, not posted for our visitors to see. In case of a dispute with another volunteer, assume that there is a misunderstanding, not that the other person is deliberately misstating the truth. 2. Strive to provide the highest quality of information on your web sites. If in doubt as to the quality of data received, reiterate the fact that this data, like each new piece of information, must be researched and proved or disproved by standard genealogy rules of evidence. It is always best to consult original primary material for verification. 3. Honor property rights, especially copyrights. Become familiar with the current copyright laws before posting data to your page. Individuals must read and understand the project policy on copyright, query management and lookups. Do not copy information from other web sites. If you feel that information on another website would be helpful to the researchers visiting your page, request permission to provide a link to the other website. 4. Give proper credit where credit is due. As in any genealogy research, be sure to document your sources for posted data. 5. Avoid harm to others visiting the project and others working within the project. Respect each other's opinions. Politely disputing the accuracy of data is not only accepted but encouraged. Keep your dispute to issues and/or facts, and not personalities. Standard "netiquette" applies to all communication within the project. The project will not tolerate foul language, personal insults or threats. 6. Respect the privacy of others. If someone in the project requests that their communication not be made public, this request must be respected. Any member of the project who fails to comply with the standards and ethics policies, as set forth in the Guidelines of the USGenWeb Project is subject to the following: The matter will be brought before the Standards and Ethics Committee for review. This may be done by any Project member who has witnessed said violation. A two-thirds vote of the Committee will be required for notification of non-compliance to be sent. Failure to rectify said non- compliance within two weeks will result in the member's project web sites being de-linked from the Project Three such letters of non-compliance will constitute automatic termination in the USGenWeb Project. ==== USGenWeb-SE Mailing List ==== The Official By-Laws Page http://www.usgenweb.org/official/bylaws.html

    3. I hope everyone on our team is aware of the election that is now going on for CC representative and NC. (County Coordinator representative to the USGenWeb Advisory Board and National Coordinator) I encourage all of you to read about the candidates at http://www.usgenweb.org/official/official.html. Every CC, Co-CC, and Assistant CC should have received 2 ballots. One ballot is for the CC Representative from our region and the second ballot is for the National Coordinator. If you have not received both of these ballots, please contact me immediately. Note that you will be able to vote one time for each of these offices, regardless of how many counties you sponsor. The voting period ends on 31 January, so be sure to return your ballots by then. If you vote now and change your mind, you can re-vote up until the time that voting ends. Only your last vote will be counted. So, if you change your mind, you may change your vote! Regards, Leigh
