Morgan Co., Al. Rootsweb MailMerge Form http:\\www.rootsweb.com\~almorgan\queries.htm http:\\www.rootsweb.com\~almorgan\queries2.htm As soon as I get the new queries posted there will be http:\\www.rootsweb.com\~almorgan\queries3.htm Leigh I only post 20 queries per page - this way there is not a problem of others loading (on another county I have a lady that uses a 386 - can you imagine!) And at the end of the year I archive them on one page ( http:\\www.rootsweb.com\~almorgan\querie98.htm http:\\www.rootsweb.com\~almorgan\querie97.htm ) Yes Betsy is great. She has always been there when I needed help. And thank you for your help! Kathy

I recently received the attached note. St. Clair is one of the counties that doesn't have an active County Coordinator, so I don't have anyone to send this on to. If anyone knows about this book and whether it is still in print, please let me know or contact this person directly. Thanks guys. Hello all. I have a funny (well, maybe not so funny) story to tell you. Seems that once upon a time there was a great website offering a terrific service to webmasters such as ourselves: www.webtechs.com This site provided an HTML validator which would read your web page and then report back any errors which it found. If your page didn't have any errors, they suggested that you put an icon ("checked by WebTechs") and a link back to their site. Being the computer professional that I am, I ran all my county pages through the validator and proudly placed the icon and link on them. Recently, the folks at WebTechs have gone off the Internet. I don't know what happened. Perhaps it just got too expensive to maintain the service and they couldn't sell advertising -- whatever. When the domain name was not renewed, an outfit in Denmark snatched it up and pointed it at their XXX-rated porno site. As you can gather, I spent a frantic hour last night removing all the links from my county pages. Fortunately, I was notified about the "problem" before I received any complaints from genealogists visiting my county sites. So, in case you might also have links to WebTechs on your pages, you'll want to remove them. If you still want an HTML Validator, use the one at the W3C (World-Wide Web Consortium): http://www.w3c.org -- and soon, RootsWeb will be placing its own validator online for the webmasters who have pages stored there. A couple of other sites provide validation as well. Regards, Leigh

Thanks Troy (UNknown CC) Troy: Instead of you having to continually update your county links, you can use the "official" link from the state site by coding the following in your page. (Actually, this technique is available in ANY page which is located on the RootsWeb server.) Today you have links coded like this: <a href="http://www.rootsweb.com/~alcalhou/">Calhoun County</a> <a href="http://www.apex2000.net/nonprof/cmoody/bibb.html">Bibb County</a> You can change them to: <!--#include virtual="/~algenweb/calhoun.url"-->Calhoun County</a> <!--#include virtual="/~algenweb/bibb.url"-->Bibb County</a> and then, every time I update the master address in the ALGenWeb directory, your page will pick up the most current address. Note that except for the name of the county -- which is always spelled out with no spaces (stclair.url, for example), you must code exactly as shown. The RootsWeb server will substitute the proper address where it sees the #include (called a Server-Side Include) statement. This technique works when coded in any page on the www.rootsweb.com server. It doesn't matter where the target page is located (as in my Bibb County example above). Try it out in a test page. Let me know if you have any problems. Leigh
Just thought I'd share a little of the good stuff. Troy - You don't know what a fantastic thing you have done for me. I have scattered queries to various counties in AL for a long time hoping for a hit. What a wonderful thing it is to have an unknown counties page, I wish more states would have one. Of course there is still no actual proof that Sterling is my James father but consider the names, my grandfather Eli Bradford, his son Dannie Buford, names similar to Sterlings brothers. This has to be my family I've looked for for so long. Thank you so much!!! Also your method of cross referencing queries with surnames is fantastic. Thanks for the work you do at that web-site. I am a lookup volunteer for Cherokee Co. TX censuses and cemeteries and hope I can repay you Alabama folks if you ever need my services. Hello folks. I've been incommunicado for almost a month. Finally got online in the middle of this week and am now dealing with approximately 1500 pieces of e-mail. This outage was the accumulation of work pressures and travel, problems with Internet access, and a bout with the flu. My apologies to anyone who needed something and got no response from me in the interim. Looks like a lot has been going on -- county websites moving to new locations, new mailing lists, new query sites, etc. I'll be forwarding pertinent information to all of you over the next few days, along with updating the state pages with all the right links. By the way, I have a new e-mail address: elsi@augustmail.com. I'll be changing the address on the ALGenWeb web site and the county sites. Mail sent to this address (lcompton@onramp.net) will be forwarded to my new address for 12 months, so I shouldn't lose any e-mail. Unfortunately, I now have some complaints to deal with. Two different people have volunteered (3 times each) to take over as County Coordinator for Montgomery County, and I hadn't responded. Understandably, they are both peeved with me. I'll be contacting them and announcing a new CC very soon. My apologies if any of YOU have tried to contact me and gotten no response. I hope that I haven't lost us some willing volunteers. Now, if the complaints were only about me, I'd just deal with them, but I also have some complaints about unresponsive County Coordinators. Since I'm so terribly sensitive right now to situations which make it impossible to respond to queries or other notes concerning our VOLUNTEER status in this project, I certainly will be responding directly to the person who complained and following up with the particular County Coordinators. Thank you to all of you who give so unselfishly of your time to ALGenWeb. Regards, Leigh

Can anyone help !!!! -----Original Message----- From: DBAUGH1805@aol.com [mailto:DBAUGH1805@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, March 11, 1999 10:12 PM To: ladyd@dnaco.net Subject: Plantations In the book Queen, by Alex Haley he mentions that William Baugh was the father of Alec Haley and that Alec took the surname of the master. In the book Roots his name was John Baugh I think. Don't know why the name changed from one book to the next. I have read that some of his genealogy was fiction. I know the book has fiction on it. Was there a Plantation called Haley Plantation in Marion County, Alabama? I did have an ancestor that was named William Baugh in Marshall County, Alabama about the same time frame. Thank you so much, David L Baugh Griffin, GA 30223
