Hi all! Bet you thoguht this was going to be an Archives Update!! (G) Can anyone tell me if there is a mailing list for anything having to do with the Civil War? My husbands' great grandfather first joind the Confederacy in November 1861, James William Cutts joined the service of the Confederacy at Americus, Sumter Co., GA in Company I, 9th AL Regiment, State troops and continued for six months. While in this regiment he served as a Private under Captain W.T. Adams and Colonel Harrison. He was discharged at Savannah, GA and returned to Americus, Sumter Co., GA. He rejoined and served in Cutt's Artillery and I have found information on that unit but would like to find out more about the 9th and Company I. Is there a roster out there anywhere on this unit? Thanks in advance for any help! Burton BLACK, BUCKSKIN AND BLUE by Art T. Burton COMING IN MAY OR JUNE 1999 ....a must read for genealogists, history-buffs, traditional and contemporary historians. I predict it will be a best-seller. Bennie *************************************************************************** BLACK, BUCKSKIN, and BLUE: African-American Scouts and Soldiers on the Western Frontier By Art T Burton Black, Buckskin, and Blue takes an in-depth look at African Americans who were scouts and soldiers on the United States western frontier during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The author explores individuals, incidents. and occurrences in which black men were involved during the westward movement as scouts and soldiers. Bypassing the many racial hostilities they endured in western frontier towns--well covered by other books- the author examines military incidents involving black soldiers and desperadoes and certain critical military engagements in which they made important contributions. This book is a continuation of the research begun by the author more than a decade ago for his first book, Black Red and Deadly: Black and Indian Gunfighters of the Indian Territory, 1870-1907. Hi All! I know alot of you cc's probably get these a lot also, but if it's okay, I would like to start sharing some of these letters with you in hopes that someone may be able to help these researchers, if not by doing anything but maybe the cc of the appropriate county could point them to a query board or mailing list. That's basicly what I do when I get a query for my counties, unless I know the family they are reseraching. Millport.....isn't that in Jefferson Co.? Troy, maybe you could pick some of these up that have no known city or county for the Unknown Query page. Thanks All! While I appreciate the generous intentions behind sending virus warnings to the mailing list, I do want to remind everyone that this is not the place to send those warnings. Let's keep this list entirely focused on the "job" of being County Coordinators and volunteers in the USGenWeb Project. The following was posted to the Internet Tourbus <http://www.TOURBUS.com> on 2 April: >Seriously, though, how damaging WAS the Melissa virus? To be >completely honest, it wasn't as bad as you heard. The virus (which, >technically, isn't even a virus) doesn't really do much harm to your >computer. The worst thing it does is fire up Outlook, spray out 50 >email messages to the folks in your Outlook address book, and attach >an infected Word document to each of those emails. Yawn. > >What no one seems to be picking up on is the fact that the Melissa >hysteria is causing more damage than the virus itself. Case in >point: the General Manager of HiWAAY Information Services, one of the >best Internet Service Providers in the country, recently posted the >following to Usenet: > > Our mail storage shot way up over the weekend ... so I wrote a > program to search the 25,000 mailboxes on our system .... copies > of the Melissa virus actually found was two (2). But there were > thousands of various versions of WARNINGS of the virus (with > some people having as many at 10 or 15 different messages > warning them about it). > >I have no doubt that the 50 email messages generated by Melissa- >infected machines running Outlook created a huge strain on the world's >mail servers. However, my bet is that hysteria-generated Melissa >virus warnings exceeded actual Melissa-generated posts by at least a >factor of ten thousand. When you hear of corporate servers crashing >from the "weight of Melissa," take those reports with a grain of salt. >Chances are, what really crashed those servers were the millions of >"beware of Melissa" emails that were sent out. The simple fact is that at RootsWeb as at the site quoted above, the traffic ABOUT the virus did the most harm. Regards, Leigh
