    1. Couldn't help but share!
    2. Lygia Cutts
    3. Hi All! I just resist sharing this. My aunt sent this joke to me and I thought it might help everyone start the day!! Now That's Hotmail!      A buisnessman from Wisconsin went on a business trip to Louisiana. Upon arriving, he immediately plugged his laptop into his hotel room the phone line and sent a short email back home to his wife, Jennifer Johnson, at her address, "JennJohn@world.net."      Unfortunately, in his haste, he mistyped a letter and the email ended up going to "JeanJohn@world.net," a Jean Johnson in Duluth, the wife of a preacher who had just passed away and was buried that day. The preacher's wife took one look at the email and promptly fainted. It read: "Arrived safely, but it sure is hot down here." 3. Amen to ladyd's post. I also tried to express that this was probably a misunderstanding, because, hey, the guy may be my kin and I'd love to have whatever info he has. However, even if a person is not new to the Internet, he's not new to LIFE, and any grade school kid knows it's not right to copy stuff and hand it in as your own. But again, yes, sometimes the subtleties are lost.... But you say he's a frequent and good contributor to AfriGeneas.... Isn't there any copyright policy there? Are contributors not forwarned about such stuff? All I did was point out that he shouldn't have copied the files and insist he remove them and also told him to feel free to link to the files. I gave him a week to respond and have had no response. I know of one submitter who wrote to him asking him to please give her credit for her work or remove her files. All he had to do was respond. I think we are being fair about this and I did ask for advice from other Archives Project Managers before even writing to the guy. I was told to write to him asking him to remove the files and give him a week to do so and then if I didn't receive a response to contact the server. This is what I have done. 3. Fellow Alabama Coordinators, I wish I'd seen the postings about this earlier but was otherwise preoccupied with my mom's illness. This poor guy probably had the bejesus scared out of him! He's a regular poster on the AfriGeneas list and seems like a nice guy. I'm sure he's pretty new to the internet and was probably unaware that he couldn't post material in it's entirety without permission. Some newbies are confused by the distinction between this and linking to a site. I saw a posting about a cemetery listing (not one in AL; I would have recognized that one) on AfriGeneas and LINKED to the one on his site unaware that it wasn't his work. He even responded to my question about whether it was an African American cemetery. In the future when we come across things like this let's keep it in perspective and give the offenders the benefit of doubt. It's not as though this were a large site where they disguise the theft by hiding our files in databases only accessible by search engine. This guy's were out in the open. He was pretty proud of his site and even invited folks to come visit! Whoever found this first should have just dropped him a friendly line along the lines of "BTW, did you know you can't..." and allowed him to remove them gracefully. May 6, 1999, a website located on the Tripod server was brought to my attention. It appears that the webmaster of Arthur's Attic has completely ignored the the copyright notices posted on the ALGENWEB Archives Table of Contents page and on each of the files located within the archives and has copied several files and posted them to his website. He has deleted the copyright and USGENWEB notice and submitters names and information. Our submitters retain the copyrights to their hard work and are free to have their information posted and published to other sites with their permission, but I have received several emails from various submitters whose files were used and they did not give permission for their hard work to be posted to this web site. 3. My lastest letter to the wemaster of "Arthurs's Attic". I will also be contacting Tripod this morning on this matter. >Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 06:58:52 -0500 >To: ArthursAttic@hotmail.com >From: Lygia Cutts <Cuttstree@net1inc.net> >Subject: Copied Files > >Dear Sir: >I am once again writing to you on behalf on the ALGENWEB ARCHIVES in regards to the copied files posted on your web site. Since I have not received any response to my letter of Thurs., May 6, 1999. I have no choice but to contact Tripod on this matter. I have already contacted a legal representative and he has agreed to help with this matter if necessary. Please find below a copy of my email of May 6, 1999 > >"Dear Sir, > Upon inspecting your web site. I have come to the realization that almost all of the information you have posted on AL at your web site was copied from the ALGENWEB ARCHIVES. Upon receiving several emails from my submitters, I know they did not give their permission for you to copy this information and post it. Also no credit was given to these submitters including myself (you have copied my information also). You have clearly ignored the copyright notice posted on the TOC page and on each file as written below: > >"All materials contained on these pages are furnished for the free use of those engaged researching their family origins.
