    1. Message for the Volunteers
    2. jpowelljr
    3. Hi Fellow USGenWeb Volunteers... Greetings from the Election Committee. You should be receiving your Ballots shortly. Our view of our current Voter list is that it is the best we could pull together in a short time, it is not perfect. Therefore there will be a one week period for anyone that believes that they are an eligible voter and have been missed by our efforts to contact us. There will probably be special exceptions beyond that week, but please don't count on that. Give your ballot a couple of days to arrive, if it does not, please contact the following Volunteers for your area on or before July 8th, please include your State and County, and anything else that you think might help us sort things out, such as your page or TOC URL. You should receive a reply that we have received your request. If for some reason, we do not believe that the request came from an eligible voter, that person will be immediately notified of our decision and a copy will be sent to the Board-Exec List. The Board may overturn our decision at that point or you may appeal through your Board Representative. We do not envision this happening, but we want to be prepared. We are eager to help you and make this the best election ever. Debbie axtman@premier1.net for the Northeast/North Central Region: States: Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Wisconsin Jerimiah moer0020@tc.umn.edu for the Northwest/Plains Region: States: Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, Wyoming Ellen epack@accessearth.net Southeast/Mid-Atlantic Region: States: Alabama, Delaware, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia Betsy betsym@1starnet.com Southwest/South Central: States: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Hawaii, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah Jim jpowelljr@worldnet.att.net Special Projects Archives (includes Tombstone) Census We as a Committee, believe in the "Will of the Volunteers". That is our entire reason for working on this committee. We have worked well together. We are proud that we were allowed to do this. Now it is your turn. Check out the Candidates, and then VOTE. It is not just your right, but your responsibility. Good luck to all of the Candidates, and to our Project, USGenWeb. Do yourself and our Project Proud, VOTE. Thanks from the Election Committee... Debbie Axtman Jerimiah Moerke Ellen Pack Betsy Mills Yvonne James-Henderson Tim Pierce Jim Powell Jr We still have a long way to go, but as Chairman of the Elections Committee... I would like to thank Debbie Axtman for jumping back in there to give me a hand. I'd also like to think Jerimiah for being that lone Volunteer for awhile, treading water all by himself. And then there is Ellen, who said she would never do it again, but still came to our rescue. I personally inadvertently made her job harder and she still came through for you. Thank you Betsy, for actually going out and asking if the Nomination Page was current, it wasn't, you saved us a lot of embarrassment. Thank you Yvonne for being there and being willing to do whatever was necessary. Your work on that first day gave me the first real hope that we could do this. And then there is Tim Pierce, I would hope we could confer the title of Honorary Member of USGenWeb on Tim. With permission of the Committee I asked Tim to join us. He agreed and was an invaluable member of our Committee, he knew what he could do and couldn't do with the software etc. He was most definitely a can do type guy with all of our requests. I feel that this was a case of a Rootsweb staff member coming fully to our aid realizing what some members of our Project might think and still giving selflessly of his time and expertise. I just picked out a few special things about each one of these Volunteers. Each one of them spent countless hours checking and sorting addresses and verifying to the best of their ability eligible voters. I think them all collectively for their dedication and hard work. You should too. We do have one more Volunteer that hopefully I will be able to accommodate with something to do as we begin to chase bounces and add missing ballots, Richard Howland. Thanks Richard for volunteering. This is getting long, but there are two groups that I would also like to thank. The SC list for jumping to our rescue and resending missing voter lists and just being a general help. And to the Board for allowing me to try and pull this off, officially or unofficially, I'm not sure which at the moment. So here we are at your mercy, we would like the chance to correct any mistakes that we may have made and serve you to the best of our abilities. We are listening. Once more the Committee says "Please Vote" Jim Powell Jr

    3. Team, We've had a very good year since I assumed the role of State Coordinator. I want to thank each one of you for the hard work that you put into your pages. Our visitors do appreciate this. As the holiday weekend approaches, I know that some of you will be travelling. Please be careful whatever your plans! Have a happy Independence Day. I will be travelling to Tuscaloosa tomorrow. Will be attending a funeral on Saturday and then staying in the area to do some genealogical research. As usual, I'll have the laptop and will be downloading e-mail. I'll probably defer web page updates until I get back home except for urgent updates and county URL changes. Just a reminder: the USGenWeb Project election period starts on 1 July and runs through the end of the month. Regards, Leigh

    1. Update: GeoCities & Yahoo
    2. Leigh Compton
    3. As of 3pm, 30 June 1999, GeoCities/Yahoo have modified their terms of service and now state that they will not republish web data. Given that change, I no longer see a need to relocate pages on GeoCities/Yahoo. I hope that no one has spent a great deal of time trying to move pages today. It does appear that GeoCities was inundated with complaints from subscribers and they took a closer look at their policy. Regards, Leigh

    1. GeoCities and Yahoo
    2. Leigh Compton
    3. Yahoo has acquired GeoCities. Additionally, Yahoo now requires users to sign a contract giving Yahoo "royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive and fully sublicensable right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform and display such Content". In other words, your web pages on GeoCities (now Yahoo) no longer belong to you. I'm asking that any county sites located on GeoCities be moved to another site which does not lay claim to your material. Additionally, you should delete all pages from GeoCities once you have relocated them. (Please note that Tripod has a similar requirement.) If you have personal pages on GeoCities, it is up to you whether or not you want to retain them there. See this URL for detailed information: http://www.wired.com/news/news/technology/story/20472.html Regards, Leigh

Fortunately he has a spare pair!! 1. Rootsweb State Resource Pages
    2. B.J. Smothers
    3. Venting! I don't begrudge Rootsweb the right to develop whatever resources they wish and to post anything they want on their site. However, I just followed the State Resources link from the main RW page and I'm bleeping mad that there is not a single link back to any of my county pages, none of which reside on RWs server. I have plenty of links to theirs! What's more RW is forcing the GenConnect system down the throats of the CCs whether they want it or not. I never particularly liked it for queries or surnames, preferring a guestbook kind of layout, so I never signed up. Besides that I wanted them to be searchable on my site along with all the other resources I have available ON MY SITE. Sort of one-stop shopping, if you will. I like simplicity. As things stand now someone else can come along and set up a query system that competes with mine even though I've been maintaining my boards for three years! This really stinks folks. This is the USGenWeb Project and RW operates in partnership (for better or worse) with USGW not in competition with it. Since it's a partnership, it shouldn't matter where our pages and resources are are housed. But increasingly it certainly does! I am not anti-RW. I'm a [small-time but still a] sponsor. I just don't like anyone "Bigfoot-ing it" all over me and others in the same position. B.J. Smothers, mad as a hatter in Dallas, Wilcox, Marengo counties and Atlanta, GA
