Hello, I didn't realize I had so much mail stacked up, as I just ran across your posting My ancestor, Samuel A. Crawford, was in the CSA 38th Infantry, Co., F. along with two brothers (see below). I have a picture that appears to be part of the Crawford family and one man in a Confederate uniform. This picture was not labeled, but I feel fairly certain that this man was one of the Crawford sons. I would appreciate any information you have on the Crawfords (have compiled Service record on one or two). Could you see if there were any Ponder men in the regiment? Thank you. Diane P.S. This is a brief summary of the information that I had been able to locate on Samuel A. Crawford and the 38th. "On December 31, 1862, Samuel, a 24 yr.old, became a private in the Confederate 38th Infantry Co.F. According to Samuel's Confederate records he received $44.00 on May 3, 1863, for service from December 31, 1862, to April 30, 1863. He received this payment while a patient in the General Hospital. No other confederate service was indicated. His brothers, William Lindsey age 23, and James Dobbins about age 21, were also listed as part of this company. This regiment was organized in May of 1862 in Mobile, AL with the following commanders during the service of the Crawford brothers: Gen. Slaughter, Gen. Cummings, after transfer to Braggs army, Gen. Clayton. Before their service ended sometime in 1863, the brothers would only have been in one real battle on June 24, 1863, at Hoover's Gap, where the regiment came "out almost unscathed".
