I have been researching the Davis and Gibson families of Fayette County. Reading the 1860 census I found four of my Davis children listed in the home of Josiah and Amena South ( Fayette census 1860, 0535 gif). Mother Irene H. Davis not included, but appears again in the 1870 Sanford Census with remaining children at home. The factor here, looking at very sketchy notes of family memory, my deceased father left, the first entry at the top of the hand written page was South. I took this as direction, since my mother's family is from the New England States. Tripping over this census, I feel it could be a family clue. Other small clues have been correct in the past Anyone interested in the surname or any help on this family greatly appreciated. Linda Jackson, Ms Linda Jackson, Ms.

Surnames: Sanford, Burford, Jones, Spencer, Cochrane Thomas Sanford(b 1816 Henderson Co, TN, d 1879 Jefferson Co, AL) came to Jefferson County as a young man and became the Superintendent of Education in 1836. He married three times: Margaret Burford, 1843, Permelia P. Jones, 1848 and Jane Dejarnette(Jones) Spencer in 1865. He had four children: John Burford Sanford, Thomas P. Sanford, Samuel Richard Sanford and Jane(Jennie) Sanford from 1844-1857. He was a saddlemaker, farmer and merchant by trade, served in the state legislature and as the Elyton(section of Birmingham) Justice-of-the-Peace. John Sanford settled in Fayette, AL where he was the mayor. Thomas P. Sanford was a house carpenter. Samuel Richard Sanford went into the timber business in Escambia County. Jane(Jennie) Sanford married a Cochrane in Jefferson County. I am looking for any information on this family, particularly around the origins of Thomas Sanford. The genealogy may be viewed at: http://home1.gte.net/cpq2m2ce/tree.htm Any assistance appreciated, and I will be glad to share information with anyone who I can help in their research. Best regards, Tom Sanford Tom Sanford(thomas.r.sanford@gte.net)
Thanks Rita. Though I did not work on the Fayette book until the end, I did work on it in the beginning. You should specifically thank Jim and Jeanette Herren jrherren@fayette.net (family chairs), who had to deal with many obstacles, while putting that book together. I also understand the topical chair worked very hard on that section. This book is the best I have seen by far. I am very proud of it. The cover is a beautiful blue color, and the photo quality was exceptional I thought. I don't think most people who worked on these books would do another one, as it is very difficult (I am wrapping up Lamar Co. right now), but perhaps five years would lessen the memory like after having a baby you know? I intend to work on another volume for Lamar Co. sometime later myself-after my memory fades a little, but with another publisher. I would encourage anyone who didn't order a book to do so (contact the Herrens about this). There are many old families in the book, and much genealogy to be found. Enjoy! Sabra
The books I ordered just arrived and let me tell you all they are wonderful! I want to thank all those involved in this project, some I know personally, some are cousins. You all should be proud for pulling this together. I have only just briefly read a few stories and looked at some pictures but these books are beyond what I expected. OK Book Committees, going to do this again say in 5 years !!! Thanks Rita Knight
I have seen positive comments about a library in Winfield, AL. Does anyone know the hours of operation of the library in Winfield? I am particularly interested in whether and when it is open on Saturday. I will be in Guin for a family reunion Saturday week and would like to visit the library on the way. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Ron Dudley

Dear Cemetery Researchers, I am writing to give you an update on our work regarding The Historical Atlas of Alabama, Volume II: Cemetery Locations by County. Allow me to first thank everyone who has contributed to the project thus far. I apologize for not being able to personally respond to every submission. We have received hundreds of submissions so far and it would not be humanly possible to respond to each contributor. While our work is not complete, the end for this edition is in sight. Some people have asked if it is too late to submit information. This is an ongoing project and as such we welcome submissions at any time. While your information may not find its way into this edition, it will be included in future editions of the Atlas. Once the Atlas becomes circulated publicly, we fully anticipate new submissions and corrections. We consider this edition to be the beginning, rather than the end, of the cemetery atlas project. We have kept track of snail mail and email addresses and will make you aware of the availability of the completed book. Publication is still several months away. Once again, my thanks. Regards, Craig Remington Director, Cartographic Research Laboratory University of Alabama cartlab@bama.ua.edu

Hi, After many years of thinking that my G-G-G Grandparents were SAMUEL C. WEBSTER and MARY W. LAWRENCE, new information found on the LDS site tells me that my G-G Grandfather WILLIAM CLARK WEBSTER, b. 1838 Fayette Co. AL, is the son of Samuel and his first wife SALLY BROCK. Mary Lawrence is Samuel's second wife. Samuel C. WEBSTER was born in 1807 in TN and an early settler of Fayette Co. AL where he died in 1880. Until today, the only BROCK connection I thought I had was the marriage of MARY ALICE "Polly" DODSON to ALFRED BROCK, b. 10 Oct. 1816. She is the sister of my G-G-G Grandfather HORACE DODSON. They lived in Fayette and Lamar Co. AL. I remember doing BROCK look-ups for others, not knowing I'd need them myself. :)) Sure wish I'd saved them. Can anyone help me get started on my BROCK line?
