Further, we are also actively seeking male Alexanders for DNA testing. We currently have 13 male Alexander descendents of these 7 brothers tested, so we have a good base to start with. However, only heirs of 3 of the 7 brothers have tested and it may be that some of the lines have no living males. We are still looking for our first William, Andrew, Francis and John heirs. Here is what I have on the Seven Brothers/Two Sisters. I wrote this in 1998 to include with information to distribute to my family members: Many years ago, when I started on this quest for the Family History of Alexanders, I was fortunate enough to speak with Charles Webb Alexander. He was born in 1915 in Lawrence County, Alabama, the son of Pruitt Webster Alexander and Bessie O. Hefner. Webb had a vivid memory of years past, perhaps even a photographic memory. Webb related to me that as a child, his most enjoyable times were the visits to his cousins home, Jake Alexander Jr.; they were about two years apart in age and enjoyed doing the same things. They would listen to the elders talking about the good old days while sitting around the fireplace in the evenings. This was 1925 when Webb was about 10 years old, him and Jake Jr. were inseparable, scrambling about in the woods, fishing or just being boys together. One of the stories that Webb remembered so vividly was the story about the 7 brothers who came from Scotland, via Ireland in the early days. The story was that the 7 Alexander brothers had been promised land when they finished doing battle for the King of Scotland, the King refused to give them the land. The brothers then tried to overthrow the King and were banished from Scotland, hence their removal to Ulster, Ireland. After considerable research and with this story always in the back of my mind, I have come to the conclusion that Webb Alexander would have had no way of knowing about the documented evidence of the 7 Alexander brothers when he related it to me in 1976. One of the old timers in the family had to have told the story, perhaps at one of the fireside chats that Webb so vividly remembered. Webb recalled that the names of some of the 7 brothers were: William, Samuel, John and James. The 7 Alexander brothers (as well as two sisters) came to Somerset County, Maryland from Ireland in 1670(some documents say 1679) on the ship Welcome. Their names were William, Andrew, Elizabeth, James, Francis, Samuel, Joseph, John, and Jane Alexander. The following pages will document the validity of this legend handed down in our family over the years. I am sure that the story has been changed and embellished with the telling of it through the years, however, I believe, based on the facts put together with the documentation, that this is the true beginning of our Alexander connections to times past. Webb mentioned a family Bible that belonged to T. Rile Alexander that he remembered seeing at his Aunt Minnie Mae and T. Rile Alexanders house. There was also a diary that told the story of the 7 Alexander brothers. This belonged to T. Rile Alexanders father, Thomas Jefferson Alexander. Webb recalled that one of his cousins, T. Rile Alexanders son had gone off to school and became a doctor and that he had moved to North Carolina. Also, that a town had been named for him in North Carolina, he thought it might have been Thomasville. After much research, I was able to locate the doctor in Thomasville, North Carolina. He was Dr. George Thomas Alexander, son of T. Rile Alexander. I corresponded with the family for many years and was able to complete the line on T. Rile Alexanders family. Dr. Alexanders daughter in law provided me with copies from T. Riles family bible along with photos of T. Rile and his first spouse, Malissa O. Mann. The search for the diary proved fruitless. My ggggrandfather was James Alexander m. to Kitty Walker Alexander. James b. 1770-1772 in Chester Co, PA. He and his family moved to Rowan Co, NC where he grew up. His father was James Alexander also. Kitty was from Iredell Co, NC...They moved to Lawrence Co, AL in 1819 from Lincoln Co TN where they had resided few years. ....James died in 1851 in Lawrence Co, AL where he and Kitty raised 10 children. When Kitty died [in 1823] he married Elizabeth Sheffield and had 4 children. Would love to share any and all info. Best, Marilyn Alexander Primero primero@sbcglobal.net "gc-gateway@rootsweb.com" <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> wrote: This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
