My husband (an Alexander) has an ancestor - Samual A. Alexander (B. abt. 1657 in Raphoe, Donegal, Ulster; D. 1733 in Cecil County, MD; married to Mary Taylor in 1674)) - that was said to be part of a "rebellious family" that moved from Scottland, to Ireland and then to Maryland. Several family members then moved to North Carolina (mid 1700's) , then Kentucky and on to Crawford County Ilinois (mid 1800's). There is also talk in his family that there was a grant of land, I believe in Canada near the US border, that was given to an Alexander, and subsequently taken away from them.
