I've been trying to track it down for about 3 years now, with no luck. My grandmother and her sister both went to their graves vehemently denying it. Yet, after my great aunt's death a letter surfaced from a cousin in which both my grandmother and great aunt had suggested that she ask their uncle about it. He sent the letter written to him to my great aunt I suppose asking her to keep out of it. The question in the letter: "was Molly (his mother) sent to Indian territory like Ella (her twin sister my gggrandmother)?" Ella Belle and Mary Frances "Molly" Alexander were the daughters of Samuel "Houston" Alexander (s/o Nelson Gray ALEXANDER and Mary A. PATTERSON)and Manerva Catherine ABBOTTS/ABBETTS/ABBITTS who married in Sumner Co. TN, Jan of 1854, Ella and Molly were born 4 July 1856. Ella never appears on a census, but she marries John Calvin PATTON (s/o Samuel Donald PATTON and Elizabeth SANFORD) in Jan. of 1880, Wilson Co., TN, has 4 children, Jessie Pearl, MayBelle Clara (my great grandmother), Edith and Claud. In 1889, apparently knowing she's dying after giving birth to Claud, she calls Molly to her side, the story goes asking her to marry John and raise her children. John and Molly marry in Jan of 1890 or 91 in McKinney TX. They have twin daughters Julia and Jenny. One dies at 3 months and the other at 3 years old. Additionally, they have a son Paul who lives to be a ripe old age. Uncle Paul is the one to whom the letter was written. He is long since deceased. So.. the "secret" went with him. Since my great great grandfather's name was Samuel Houston Alexander, I've wondered if Sam Houston of Texas fame was related to us. Houston is known to have lived among the Cherokees for a time. However, no luck finding a connection there, either.. Are we or aren't we.. that is the question.. to misquote Shakespeare.. LOL We'll know in the by and by my Grandmother would say if she were here.. Cindy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
