Is it possible he was from Madiera Portugal? Please check there, as it is an island also, but if they menitoned The Azores, they may have been mistaken and not realized Madiera is island also. Madeira is farther south, just off the coast near I was there this spring and it seemed so fabulous, though, I can't imagine anyone wanting to leave.
