Unfortunately, most states didn't keep birth records until the 1850's, or later. If your JA fought with the Union Army, his pension application might contain useful info. Have you checked his marriage documents (not just the transcriptions, but the actual application/license)? Also, check for any wills/probate records that may exist--including his father's. This is very tedious work, but may yield something. Lastly, check for any church records. Good luck with your search.
