James N. was born, 8 Apr 1873, to Randall McGinley & Mary Janet (McGanghey) Alexander, born ca 1845 Shirleysburg, PA & ca 1857 Fairfield, PA, respectively. Randall died in 1913, age 68. Mary Janet died 1895, age 38. James Newton Alexander graduated from Mercersburg College, 1891, and Jefferson Medical College, 1895. Was house surgeon for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Altoona, PA, for 18 months. In Aug 1896, Dr. Alexander was appointed chief surgeon of St. James Hospital, Butte, MT, and held that position for 10 years. He then returned to his old home in PA where he was associated with his father in the practice of medicine. Later spent 6 months in surgical work in Washington DC & then returned to Roundup, MT, as physician and surgeon for the Republic Coal Company. In 1917, commissioned as captain and in 1918 was sent to Fort Riley officer's training camp. Later served in France, was commissioned as a major, served at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and was discharged at Camp D.A. Russell in Wyoming, 16 Jul 1919. He returned to Roundup, MT, and resumed his practice. On 8 Feb 1919, La Rochelle, France, James married Miss Germaine Kiere, born in Belgium, educated in England, and was the head of the welfare work of the American Red Cross in La Rochelle, France, taking care of Belgian refugees. 1930 Federal Census, Roundup, Musselshell County, MT, shows J. Newton and Germaine Alexander had 5 children: William N., age 9; Marie, age 7; James C., age 4-9/12; Douglas M., 3-1/12; John R., 4/12, all born in Montana. Obituary of Marie Alexander (Mrs. Gene Coons), 3 Nov 2004, Avondale, AZ, showed two surviving brothers: James Alexander, Harlowton, MT, and John Alexander of Big Timber, MT. James N. Alexander died 23 Jan 1932, age 58, Musselshell County, MT SS Death Index: Germaine Alexander, b. 21 Jun 1894, d. 2 Mar 1990, Safford, Graham County, AZ I am not related.
