Briggs and Patrick Alexander: The following site contains good biographical sketches of the theologian Dr. Archibald Alexander (along with a woodcut image) and also of Abner Nash, the governor of North Carolina: http://www.famousamericans.net/ I mention the latter because of a note by one contributor to RootsWeb that an Abner Nash gave surety for the marriage of James and Jane B. (Nash) Alexander, and so I wonder whether he might be a descendant or relative of the governor. There’s also a good biographical sketch of the theologian in Lyon Gardiner Tyler’s Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, vol. II, pp. 184-185, if you are interested. This volume also contains sketches of the lives of other Alexanders: James W., Mark, Thomas L., William, and William C. I have Archibald the theologian as a son of William Parks Alexander (1738-1797) and Agnes Ann Reid, and a grandson of Archibald Alexander and Margaret Parks. This interests me, because my James Alexander is said also to be a son of Archibald and Margaret, and his wife Elizabeth is said to be a sister of Agnes Ann Reid. Only my James had to be born in the 1730s in order to father my ancestor George Alexander (b. 1754). Whether James is a son of Archibald and Margaret, he must fit into the family somehow! Regarding Archibald's son James by his second wife, I have occasionally found that a man has had two sons with the same first name but born of different wives. Rex Everage
