    1. James L Davis/Sarah J Alexander of Louisville
    2. Ken Painter
    3. According to Susan L Kraft's (my g.g. grandmother) death certificate, her parents were James Davis and Sarah J Alexander. At the time of her death on 9 March 1919, she was living at 225 S. Shelby St. in Louisville, KY. This is confirmed in the 1915, 1918 and 1919 Louisville directories. She is listed in each as the widow of William Kraft, NW Kraft and Nicholas Kraft. It should be noted that Sarah J Davis had also lived at 225 S. Shelby. This is confirmed in the 1886, 1887, 1890, 1902 and 1909 directories. In all but the 1909 directory, she is listed as living at 527 Shelby. In 1909 they changed the address to 225 S. Shelby when they renumbered the streets. Also, Sarah is listed as the widow of James L. Davis in the 1886, 1887 and 1890 directories. The 1900 and 1910 census also confirm the Shelby St. address. In the 1886 directory, Susan's husband, William Kraft, is listed at 527 Shelby as a boarder. Susan and William married on 26 June 1885. So apparently, William and Susan lived with Sarah. In the 1890 directory, Mrs Loretta Kraft is living at 527 Shelby. Loretta was Susan's middle name. William, however, is listed at 921 E. Madison. In the 1887 directory, he is listed at 748 E. Green. This was his Mom's, Mary Kraft, address. She is listed as the widow of George. William and Susan are listed together in the 1900 census with 4 of their 5 children. William died 16 November 1908 according to the Louisville mortality records. He and Susan are buried in St. Louis Cemetery as is Sarah and another of Sarah's children Alexander Davis. Now that I have established relationships, here are the problems and I hope solutions. I am trying to find James and trying to comfirm Sarah's birthdate and birthplace. According to Sarah's death certificate, she died 3 February 1914. Unfortunately, not much information is given. name: Sarah J Davis address: 228 S. Campbell date of death: February 3, 1914 age: 75 birthdate: not written birthplace: Ireland parents: don't know informant: daughter 228 S. Campbell 228 S. Campbell is just a couple blocks east of 225 S. Shelby. I checked the 1910 census for 228 S. Campbell and found a John Davis at that address. Davis, John Head M W 52 M 28 KY VA KY Mary K Wife F W 51 M 28 10 10 KY KY KY John H Son M W 20 S KY KY KY Geo R Son M W 17 S KY KY KY Mary K Daughter F W 14 S KY KY KY Chas Son M W 10 S KY KY KY Lily J Daughter F W 7 S KY KY KY So, this is probably a relation but, if it said daughter as the informant on the death certificate, then did Mary K marry another Davis? Now the question remains was Sarah born in Ireland and was she 75? According the 1900 and 1910 census, the death certificate is wrong. 1900 census Davis, Sarah J Head W F July 1842 57 WD 7 4 OH OH OH James A Son W M Jan 1873 27 S KY KY OH Alexander, Emma Niece W F Dec 1872 27 S KY KY KY 1910 census Davis, Sarah J Head F W 75 WD 7 3 OH OH OH Alexander, Emma Boarder F W 42 S KY KY KY Like I said before, both these census records are at the Shelby St. address. See the conflict in age and birthplace. Apparently, James A was buried as Alexander Davis. He died in 1906 hence the one less child living for Sarah. As I continued with the census, I could not find the Davis family in the 1880 census. I did try to find James in the Louisville mortality record but I guess he was not recorded. I may have found the family in the 1870 census. Davis, James L. 43 M W Saddletreemaker KY Sarah 38 F W Keeping House KY Delia 14 F W KY Mary 10 F W KY Sarah G. 5 F W KY Susan 3 F W KY If this is them, then the age of Susan is correct as she was born in 1867 according to the 1900 census and her death certificate. Also, if the Mary at 228 S. Campbell is her daughter, then the age is correct for her in both census. Once again however, Sarah's age and birthplace are not correct. The 1870 census would have her born in 1832. I am sure that James' age is close. Now for the 1860 census. Tom Davis 24 Saddletreemaker KY Agnes Davis 19 VA James Davis 30 Saddletreemaker KY Sarah Davis 30 KY Laura Davis 5 KY Cordelia Davis 3 KY Mary C Davis 1 KY Susan Davis 60 KY I believe that this is the same James and Sarah. The children are the same except that Laura apparently died before the 1870 census. It is probable that they named their youngest daughter after James' mom. James occupation is the same in both census. Again however, the ages are off. This would make them both born in 1830. Now for the 1850 census. Davis family first Susan Davis 54 F KY James 23 M Chainmaker? KY Thomas 18 M Sadler KY Cordelia 14 F KY James' age is similar to the 1870 census but Susan and Thomas only aged 6 years in the 1860 census. It is probable that James named a daughter after his sister. 1850 census Alexander. Thomas Alexander 50 M Farmer Ireland Margarett 39 F Ireland Luticia 17 F Tenn? Sarah 14 F Ohio Mary 12 F KY Martha 10 F KY Margaret 8 F KY Thomas 6 M KY Elizabeth 2 F KY Elizabeth Gray 20 F MD Rebbeca 42 F MD I believe this to be the correct Alexander family. It is the only connection I can make to Ohio and Ireland, even though Sarah is now born in 1836. So, what does everyone think? Should I say that Sarah J Alexander Davis was born between 1836 & 1839 in Ohio to Thomas and Margarett Alexander and that James Davis was born in 1837 in Kentucky to Susan or am I just wasting my time and should go a different direction. It can be confirmed starting with the 1886 Louisville directory but not much farther. Ken Painter

His father was Henry (Harry) Miller Alexander born in MA as well around 1882. I have some information that goes back further. I guess this really depends on if your husband was from the northeast or not. As far as I know, my side of Alexanders did not venture out of the northeast until the last 20 years. I hope this helps!

    1. Re: ALEXANDER-D Digest V06 #78, John Alexander of Menstrie
    2. My great great grandfather was Hugh Alexander born in 1795 in Blairlogie, Clackmannan, Scotland. I can trace my Alexander line back to Robert Alexander of Menstrie who married Bessie Allexander (Alexander) of Tillicultry in 1700 in Logie Parish. My Hugh came to North America prior to 1816 and settled in New York State. I am also interested in the various Alexander's of Menstrie including the family of Sir William. We visited Scotland in 2001 and I met with a local historian in Sterling. He knew a lot about Sir William. He showed me the actual grave site of Sir William. His grave was removed some time later and, apparently, nobody knows where. I talked to him about John son of Sir William. The Scots Peerage reports that John died in Scotland about 1641. The local historian thought that it was possible that John could have removed to North America just to disappear. Prior to his death, Sir William was in a heap of financial trouble and John could have left just to get away from all of the family trouble. Perhaps one will never know for sure. Mert Alexander

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/gV.2ADEB/4070 Message Board Post: I have just spent most of the last several days reading everything I could find on the connection of the "infamous 9" of Cecil County, MD back through Raphoe, Donegal, Ireland and back to Sterling, Menstrey, Scotland and, frankly, my head is spinning! Although not proven (that I could find), it seems that the train of thought that the 7 brothers and 2 sisters were the children of William (married Anne Liston) who was the son of John seems to make a lot of sense. I have also seen suggested that John Alexander was the son of Sir William Alexander, Earl of Sterling and also that he couldn't be that son because Sir William's son John died in 1641 shortly after being released from debtors prison. OK - now for the reason for my post. I just came across a list of the land grants for the "Plantation of Ulster" barony of Raphoe and county of Donegal. ( http://members.aol.com.lochlan2/donegal2.htm ) The often quoted lease, in 1608, of Eredy from Sir James Cunningham to John Alexander is there. But the very next entry is the sale of 2000 acres by Sir James Cunningham to Sir William Alexander of Menstrey on 26 Feb 1616. I don't know but it seems to me that somehow this suggests a connection between the two Alexanders. Any thoughts or comments are very welcome.
