Your grandfather, Nick, is my cousin. I haven't had any contact with him since I was a small child. (Very long story.) One of my half-brothers, Bill, was the family historian and somehow kept up with all of us. Since he passed away, it has been hard to keep track - he wasn't too good at record keeping in any organized fashion. Martha Amanda's last name was Nichols. Her family was from the Mobile area, and from what I was told, was quite well-to-do. I had not heard that she was Cherokee or adopted, and as much as Bill and my father Richard L. talked about her, I am sure something would have been mentioned. I do know for sure that she was not G-Granpa Richard M.'s first wife. I think where the Cherokee comes in is that the family thinks that his First wife was Cherokee. They believe he had a second wife, who was from Cuba and died in Florida, but we haven't been able to find any proof of this. Martha Amanda is buried next to Richard M. in the Old Handsboro Cemetary just out side of Gulfport, MS. Several family members are buried there. I have been trying, but have been unable to find out how the cemetary came through Katherine. My father is buried there also, and the cemetary sits right on a bayou, so I am worried about it. I have not been in a position to travel and see for myself. Please feel free to email me directly and we can chat more. I have lots of pictures of various family members that I will be glad to share with you. It's so exciting to find another member of the family! All the very best, Elizabeth
Regarding message below: I'm from USA and looking for information on the Alexander family in Ayrshire prior to 1800s. My ggggg grandfather, Hugh Alexander, married Agnes McLelland in Dailly, Ayr on the 6th of May 1766. They left for the US with five children prior to the Revolutionary War. Presumably I, too, descend from Alexanders reputedly from Stirling, Scotland via Ireland. The family story is that "John Alexander sailed from Belfast in 1818, coming up the St. Lawrence with two brothers, Robert and Thomas. Robert proceeded to New York, Thomas to Virginia. John and Thomas corresponded until proir to the Civil War in 1860 when John became indignant at Thomas' suggestion that they exchange a certain number of slaves for a number of cows....A descendant of John Alexander, Earl of Stirling, the Estate, including Stirling Castle, reverted to the Crown following purblication of an adverisement in a Montral paper for John and brothers." (all this from records my grandfather passed down - no luck so far finding the elusive newspaper ad, John's parents, or where he was born in Ireland). My line is through John (b. 12 Feb 1787 Ireland, m. Elizabeth McCullough b. abt 1797 in Ireland). John died 15 Sep 1862 in Louisville, St. Lawrence, NY. Alexander women married Corrigan, Mein, Stafford, Riley. Wives of Alexanders include Tryon, Vernoy, Everts, Hurd. Most lived in NY, VT. I wonder if your lines connect with Robert or Thomas?

My husband (an Alexander) has an ancestor - Samual A. Alexander (B. abt. 1657 in Raphoe, Donegal, Ulster; D. 1733 in Cecil County, MD; married to Mary Taylor in 1674)) - that was said to be part of a "rebellious family" that moved from Scottland, to Ireland and then to Maryland. Several family members then moved to North Carolina (mid 1700's) , then Kentucky and on to Crawford County Ilinois (mid 1800's). There is also talk in his family that there was a grant of land, I believe in Canada near the US border, that was given to an Alexander, and subsequently taken away from them. I will try to do more research on that and send more info. The link in your post would not work, so please send any additonal links of info you may have. Thank you!
