Hello Alexander Cousins - I am new to the list and wanted to say that I would love to help anyone who is trying to connect to the Virginia Alexander family. Also, I had my mother, who is an artist, make greeting cards with the Alexander coat of arms if you are interested in them. They are beautiful! Her web site is: http://madelinecreations.com/ Click on the cards photo in the middle of the page - then go to Family Crests. You will see the Alexander note card there. She also does suitable for framing photos of this coat. They look amazing on fine linen paper - much better than the scanned image. (She is also working on other lines too.) Take care Tricia Petitt, Alexander cousin (also see my line on the below link for my Alexander lines and let me know if we connect!) http://members.tripod.com/~Bonestwo/

Just a note of caution for anyone using manuscripts or publications presented by other researchers - please make sure to verify the claims made in those works! Although the "Stafford Manuscript" aka "Alexander Notebooks", compiled and researched by Dr. Alvah Stafford, edited by Paul Rowland, indexed by James Ballagh Moore (printed 1985) is a great guide - it does contain errors! For example Stafford includes as children of Elias Alexander of PA - William born 1704 died 1772 and Elias born 1746 died 1818. Primary documents prove, without a doubt, that both William & Elias Jr. (sons of Elias and brothers of Jedediah, etc.) died by 1754 in PA. I am sure that 20 years ago Stafford (and other researchers) made the best use of the documents available to him - but genealogy - like any interest must be continually updated to reflect new information. > The family, including John McKnitt Alexander, is >well documented in a typewritten manuscript housed in the Carolina >Room of the Mecklenburg County (NC) Public Library. John McKnitt Alexander is a part of the Alexanders who settled in Mecklenburg County NC at an early time -- prior to the Revolution. His family were first in Maryland and Pennsylvania I believe -- maybe Delaware as well. The family, including John McKnitt Alexander, is well documented in a typewritten manuscript housed in the Carolina Room of the Mecklenburg County (NC) Public Library. It was prepared by a man named Stafford and is often called the "Stafford Manuscript". It is some 200-300 pages long. By the way, one member of this family, Hezikiah Alexander, built a stone house in Mecklenburg County -- one of the first stone houses to be built. The house (which is in excellent condition) along with its spring house is a focal point for the Charlotte History Museum. The several Alexanders who lived in Mecklenburg County just prior to the Revolution are identified as signers -- perhaps writers as well -- of the Mecklenburg Declaration, a document that preceded the Decla ration of Independence. A copy of the document does not appear to have survived but it is referenced in some contemporary writings of the time. You may want to contact the Carolina Room at the Mecklenburg Public Library to see if they could make copies of the pages regarding John McKnitt Alexander and his descendants. I am not sure that they will, but it may be worth a request. Hi Val, That message was sent to the wrong list, but your question does belong here. There were many John McKnitt Alexander's. The original John McKnitt was born in County Dublin in Ireland. He supposedly married Elizabeth Wallace. Then had 3 children: Jane McKnitt (b. c 1653) who married Andrew Alexander (one of the original 7) Abigail McKnitt (b. <1653) who married Joseph Alexander (one of the original 7) and John McKnitt (b. 1665) who married Jane Alexander (sister of Andres & Joseph) So there was a close relationship between the McKnitt's and the Alexander's. From that point on, it seels like every Alexander had at least one son named John McKnitt Alexander! So if you could give me some time period, some other info to separate yours from all the others, I'll see what I can find. Alice Val wrote: >I keep seeing the name John McKnitt Alexander. Hello Alice, My Alexander interest is in the families found in Frederick Co. Md, could you please be kind enough to share your documentation for Isaac s/o Abraham & Dorcas Alexander. Do you have any records to prove who the father of this Abraham Alexander was? From what I can tell there were several Abraham Alexanders in Frederick Co. Md during the 1750s - one is possibly a son of Elias (wife Ann) who died 1751 in Frederick Co. Md and another older Abraham who appears to be the son of Moses Alexander of Cecil Co. Md. . Thank you, Susan McIntyre Alice Campbell wrote: > Dr. Isaac Alexander, son of Lt. Col. Abraham Alexander (the Signer) > and Dorcas (Wilson) Alexander, was born 5 Dec 1757 in Frederick Co., > MD. Dr. Isaac Alexander, son of Lt. Col. Abraham Alexander (the Signer) and Dorcas (Wilson) Alexander, was born 5 Dec 1757 in Frederick Co., MD. He came with his parents to Mecklenburg Co., NC a few years later. He is said to have married 4 times. 1st to a woman named [Unk.] Reese, no children. Then on 18 May 1775 he married Catherine Orr. They had two children, Albert B. Alexander, b. 1 Oct 1776 (died young), and Amelia Alexander, b. 5 Apr 1781. She married William Adamson. After Catherine's death, Isaac next married on 14 Dec 1788 Margaret Brisbane Smith, dau of William Brisbane and Margaret Stewart, widow of John Smith (and mother of Maria 'Elizabeth Smith who married Henry Dana Ward). Isaac & Margaret had no children. After her death Isaac married once again on 15 Jul 1807 to Sarah Thornton and they had 2 children, Henry Dana Ward Alexander, b. 19 Jun 1810 (who married Mary White Alexander), and Isaac Brownfield Alexander, b. 28 Jan 1812, (who married Elizabeth Margaret Gilman). Dr. Isaac Alexander died in Camden, SC on 13 Jan 1812, he last child being born a couple of weeks after his death. Isaac Alexander was a physician. In 1777 he was president of Queen's College/Queen's Museum (also called Liberty Hill) in Charlotte, Mecklenburg co., NC. Some of the trustees at that time were Abraham Alexander(his father), John McKnitt Alexander (his father's first cousin), Dr. Ephraim Brevard (his 3rd cousin), Thomas Polk, Thomas Reese (possibly his father-in-law or brother-in-law), and Waightstill Avery. During the war he moved to Camden and was present in his position as a physician at the Battle of Camden and rendered great service to the fallen commander Baron Von Kalb. He died 13 Jan 1812 in Camden and was buried in the Old Presbyterian Church Cemetery. If you'd like more on him on his line, just let me know. If anyone has any more information on him, please also let me know. The good doctor was my ggg granduncle. Alice Campbell
