Could any of your relatives have settled in the north western corner of Georgia? Specifically Gordon county? Surnames: Alexander,Karnodle Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/gV.2ADEB/4152 Message Board Post: I'm looking for any relatives that descended from John Vinson Alexander or have him in their family tree. John Vinson Alexander was my great-grandfather and he lived with his wife and 12 children in the Western Tennessee in the Henderson & Madison County area. His father was Harvey M. Alexander and his mother was Melinda Jane Mainord (from the large family in the area that also spelled their surname Maynard). John Vinson was born on July 14th, 1889 and he died on May 3rd, 1956. He married Kate Francis Karnodle. She was born on March 15th, 1893 and she died on December 23rd, 1972. They were married on October 17th, 1909 in the city of Ranger in Madison County, Tennessee. I don't know much of anything about many of my cousins. Apart from my grandfather's descendants and one of his brother's descendants, I have never really met any of my relatives except for a few minutes at a time perhaps. I'm 28-years-old right now. I had my chances to go to a reunion here and there in the past when I heard about them, but I never thought at that time about how important family - the extended family - truly is. Now I'm not able to get in touch with anybody because, frankly, it seems that none of my other family members are interested in genealogy (they don't make their presence known online, which is frustrating). Here are John Vinson Alexander & Kate Francis Karnodle's children. If any of these names are your relatives, I'd really appreciate it: Lee Roy Franklin b. 1910 d. 1992 (my grandfather) Lacy McLellan b. 1912 d. 1982 Laura Cumie b. 1914 Paul Dudley b. 1916 Jesse Willard b. 1918 Truman Cleo b. 1920 d. 1990 (my grandfather's brother that I knew) William Daniel b. 1922 Francis Louise b. 1924 Robert Calvin b.1926 John Vinson, Jr. b. 1928 Billy Joe Richard Eugene b. 1930 Howard Lynn b. 1932 Right now, I am finding interesting information about other sides of my family. I'm learning about the Lewis family of Southern Georgia and the fact that in 200 years, they've spawned enough children to fill a professional football stadium (give or take a few thousand maybe). I'm also learning about the Mainords/Maynards and their arguments over how their surname is spelled or the brickwall they've hit. I've hit a brickwall too and I'd love to learn more information about the Alexanders of Western Tennessee. I know there are many still around, but I can only hope that they visit Ancestry.com too. Sorry for the long email...I write a lot when I'm tired. Please let me know if you can help (with the family tree - not me being tired). I have a good amount of information that I can definitely share. Thanks! My Hezekiah / Ezechial, Ecredial ( lots of ways this appeared on the census) is actually an 1810 or therabouts person so not teh one you refer too. However, as christian names can be hereditary - where did your family originate in the UK? Were they from Staffordshire/Warwickshire (also known as Staffs or Warks) I even have an ancestor - female - called Leveziah - unusual for the UK - who is actually a younger sibling of Ezechial. I'am not sure? I have got my Alexanders researched only as far back as my grgr-grandfather who is named David who was married to a Susanna. Books that will help you in your research: Charles and Virginia Alexander in "Alexander Kin" There are several lines of Alexanders. Some coming a little before and a little after 1600. According to Charles and Virginia Alexander in "Alexander Kin" a family of seven brothers and two sisters came to America by about 1680. A previous Alexander had come to Nova Scotia, son of Sir William Alexander Earl of Stirling who was born in 1580 and died in London in 1640, buried in Stirling. In the year 1688 a group of seven brothers Alexander fled the cruelties inflicted by James II upon his Scottish subjects in Ireland, carrying aboard their preacher who had come to the dock to administer services. This company landed in Manhattan Island (New York). Their descendants of these families went into Pennsylvania and North Carolina (Foote's Sketches of NC). One source says this family was known as the Manhattan Alexanders. Our line of Alexanders have been called the Somerset Maryland Alexanders, and probably in America before 1665. Originally from Scotland this family of Alexanders was supposedly in Ireland about 1610. Just so you know, names repeat. The Alexander Family had a habit of naming people after family so you have I. II. III. IV. and so on. Some times the names included clues as to where they orginated from. Example of this: Middle names such as: Franklin, Hillhouse, Orr. The Orr(s), Wallace(s), Steele(s), Palmer, Kerr, McLaughlin, Montgomery,Polk, etc. All inter-married into each-other . FYI: There are the Anson Co. Alexanders, the Alexander Co. Alexanders, the Steele Creek Alexanders, etc. The family migrated fast after Rev. War and more so after the death of Hezekiah Alexander whose homestead still stands in Charlotte, NC. and was the recent place the 2005 Alexander Family Reunion was held. The homestead/Museum has a huge Alexander Data base. The homestead was built in 1774 and is the oldest home in Charlotte. Other places to visit: Settler's Cemetery (Abraham Alexander, Thomas Polk, etc. are buried there) Elmwood Cemetery has many Alexander burials, Sugaw Creek and Sugar Creek I and II, as well as the Sugaw Creek Presby. Church. Another clue: Head of Christana Presby. Church in Elkton, MD. Happy Hunting. Sincerely, Shanna Palmer

I would have liked to have met James Gibson Alexander. He was born in Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland and imigrated when he was 15. The youngest of a large family. He played the violin in the streets of NYC for money [begger?]. Penn Yan was a saloon town back then and he probably got a job singing and playing the fiddle there. He was a farmer, school teacher, auctioneer, square dance caller besides the fiddle playing. Their farm was near Branchport. I have copies of his citizenship papers where he lied about his age before a judge and signed the citizenship papers. Later in his life he came clean on his age which fits with the Ayrshire census data....Paul Household Record 1880 United States Census Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace James ALEXANDER Self M Male W 29 SCOT Farmer SCOT SCOT Sarah ALEXANDER Wife M Female W 24 NY Keeping House NY NY Source Information: Census Place Jerusalem, Yates, New York; Family History Library Film 1254949 ; NA Film Number T9-0949; Page Number 406A James Gibson Alexander and Sarah Lydia Paddock were married before 1880. DIED John C. Alexander, living about two miles west of this village, of anaemia. After an illness of four months he peacefully sank to rest Thursday morning, March 27th, about two o'clock. Mr. Alexander was born in Walworth county, Wisconsin, May 15, 1848. In the year of 1869 he emigrated to this state with his parents. In the spring of 1870 he settled in McLeod county, on a farm three miles west of Brownton, where he resided until the spring of 1888, when he moved to Glencoe and engaged in business. After living there until 1894, he moved back to a farm two miles west of Brownton where he has since resided up to the time of his death. He leaves to mourn his death, Miss Sadie, an adopted daughter, and two brothers, Robert and William. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon March 30th, at two o-clock from the M.E. church at Glencoe, of which he was an honored member. In his death one beloved and respected has passed to the Christian reward, and the Pearly Gates were swung wide open to admit him whom his friends knew only to love and honor for his nobleness of character, and noble Christ like spirit that seemed to cover him, as a mantle in all his manner of life.

The pertain only to the Clan member they are designed for. Therefore each member could have a very different shield.....or they could be the same. Generally the symbology on the shield would represent something important to that person or clan.
