The name Eredy closely resembles Eradall, one of the merk lands in South Kintyre, granted byJames III in 1484 to Tarlach MacAlexander, of Tarbert. (Reg. Sig.,lib. X., 9 ,reference). It says "Sir William Alexander of Menstry, afterwards Earl of Stirling, maintained a correspondence with his relatives in Kintyre....... in 1629, the original settlers included John Alexander of Eredy; he received new titles to the land which was chiefly appropriated to Scottish settlers. (Hill's Montgomery MSS,p183). The William Alexander who settled in Somerset County, Md. is my husband's ancestor. William was cousin to Sir William Alexander, through John Alexander of Eredy. Please note the three different generations who had the name of William born about 1620,1646 and 1674. You may want to read, Jethro Rumple's, History of Presbyterianism. You can inquire with the Clan Macalister Center at Glenbarr Abby or inquire with the American Clan Macalister (google it). My husband comes from the Alexander's of Mecklenburg County. It is a tangled rooted tree, I will tell you that much! The Alexander's named their children after cousins, brothers, sisters, and even there are a few inter-marriages, that make you go cross-eyed. 3. Shawnee- I have replied twice to your message but I keep getting knocked off, so I will try to reply this way. Angus/Anguish is my 7th great-grandfather. I have a little information on him. We know that he was in Lancaster, Virginia because he is listed in the vestry books for Christ Church Parish in 1739, 1740 and 1741 as being reimbursed for "keeping Ellison Brown." I have no idea who Ellison Brown is; an orphaned child, a grandchild, a niece or nephew... The fact that he was given this resposibility would seem to indicate that he was well-respected or at least financially capable. There is also a will written and recorded in 1742, again in Lancaster, Virginia, so he was still there at that time. I have no idea who his parents are, but I have speculated that he may be related to the other Alexander line of mine. They came originally from Scotland and landed at Lancaster, Virginia in 1667. Most of this other family migrated to Maryland for awhile and then settled in Mecklenburg, North Carolina. There is circumstantial evidence that two of the brothers, James and Joseph, stayed in Lancaster for awhile. It is possible that one of them might be the undocumented father or grandfather of Angus. Our Alexander family migrated from Virginia to Wilkes County, North Carolina (along the Yadkin) and then on to South Carolina. Coincidentally, Wilkes County is not far from Mecklenburg and they all ended up in the same general area of South Carolina. I have seen no evidence to support this theory whatsoever. However, I haven't seen anything to disprove it either! If you find anything on Angus would you PLEASE share it with us. This has been driving me crazy for years!!! Thanks so much and have a GREAT day!!!
