Another correction -- the 1920 census of Jackson Co., NC of Judson and Minnie Alexander shows Rachel Alexander (mother-in-law) age 67. Upon further research Minnie's mother was Rachel Parker. So it seems that the census taker not only could not write plainly -- he also shows Judson Alexander's mother-in-law as Rachel Alexander instead of Rachel Parker. Now -- back to my original question. Does anyone know what happened to Samuel M. and Rachel Alexander who married 1876-79 in Jackson Co., NC. They cannot be located on the 1880 census. Has anyone found them in 1880? Could they be in a neighboring county or state? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Phyllis in GA
Correction in my earlier message. On the 1920 census of Jackson Co., NC, Rachel Alexander is living with Judson and Minnie Alexander. Whoever transcribed the census put Judson's name as Andrew. There is definitely a loop below the line on his name. On the 1930 census his name is transcribed as "Jut C. Alexander", which was probably Jud or a terrible mess of the name Judson. Phyllis
I am trying to find information on Samuel Alexander (b. 1856) and Rachel Coward (b. 1854) who married in Jackson Co., NC 1876/79. Rachel was the daughter of Samuel H. and Matilda Coward. Samuel and Rachel had a daughter Kathryn "Kate" b. 1885, who married Thad Wilson Farmer Other possible Alexander children: Washington b. 1879 "Jut Carey" or Andrew ? b. 1881 - married Minnie in 1910 Jane b. 1883 Ancestry.com give Rachel's date of death as 1895. However, there is a Rachel Alexander (who is the right age), living with Andrew and Minnie Alexander on the 1920 census of Jackson County, NC. I have not been able to locate Samuel or Rachel on the 1880, 1900 or 1910. Where were they????? Does anyone know what happened to Samuel and Rachel (Coward) Alexander. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Phyllis in GA

I have some details but the short story is: My grandmother was Pearl Evelyn Allen; her family name was Alexander. Her mother was Eva Elizabeth Alexander whose dad was Reverend George Madison Alexander. So, George's dad was William Squire Alexander, my great-great-great-grandfather. William Squire was the son of Thomas and Yeureth--we haven't known her last name unless your research fills in the blanks. Do you know if Yeureth had any Indian lineages? Cousin Sandy, an Alexander, has a photo of Thomas' gravestone in Missouri that you might want to see. So, let me know if you want to exchange GEDCOM files. It will have photos of the tombstone, Eva Elizabeth, etc. I use Legacy which is free software the Mormons created and make available via download. God bless, Paul

My understanding is that James and William never spoke after William went to Canada. I have search the ship records but can't find where James and Rosa came over here together. He was a plumber and a school teacher. I am told the males never carried a middle name until my grandparents had children. All of the 1st males in our families are named William (mother picks the middle name) and the 2nd male is named James. I can't find any info on these two and therefore cant go any further without it. I've "rescued" two old photographs of Bertha & Effie WAITE which were taken at the J. Swart Studio in Nevada City, California. The photographs were taken in 1884 with the two girls appearing to be about 7-12 years old at the time. Based on limited research I believe they are the children of Benjamin C. & Catherine WAITE and that Bertha WAITE married George Henry ALEXANDER on the 22nd of Apr 1905 in Nevada City, CA. The actual truth about it is, what does it truly matter in the grand scheme of things? If your ancestors did something or a member of the family had a secret, it is absolutely no reflection on present day family members. Whether you are an Alexander or what EVER, we are all members of the human race, and if we have not learned tolerance and the ability to forgive, we are no where. I think it is more important to be a member of the larger family, flawed and human and wonderful! It would be so great to see these things be overshadowed by the joy of accomplishing another branch of the old family tree! Wouldn't that be super?! Brick walls knocked down and information out of the shadows. Sandi Mitchell Menifee CA p.s. This whole reason is why I have no family other than the name. It's both disgusting and sad. I am my own human being. Alexander or Smith or Jones. It never occurred to me in my entire life that as a good person, anyone wouldn't want to claim me! Quite the opposite. I've been at this for years. Unfortunately, most states didn't keep birth records until the 1850's, or later. If your JA fought with the Union Army, his pension application might contain useful info. Have you checked his marriage documents (not just the transcriptions, but the actual application/license)? Also, check for any wills/probate records that may exist--including his father's. This is very tedious work, but may yield something. Lastly, check for any church records. Good luck with your search.
