They usually have books on surnames in those libraries. I know the book was written in the 1960s (and I think she wrote another book about the Alexanders too). I don't know of any place online that sells it (I'm not a big book reader, so all I checked was on Amazon.com). Her books covered Alexanders of: Greene County, Tennessee Guilford county and Randolph County, North Carolina and Lancaster County, Pennsylvania There may have been others, but I'm only going by memory and little notes I've written down over the years. I do know that none of 'em are the counties where my known Alexander relatives derive from. Good luck. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My g-g-grandparents were Harvey M. Alexander (b. 1850, d. 1929) and Melinda Jane Mainord (b. 1852, d. 1934). I was about to start believing that Harvey just appeared out of nowhere because nobody knows who his parents were. However, I have recently found out through DNA testing that he's in some way related to the Mecklenburg, NC Alexanders. Harvey & his wife have hundreds of descendents that are currently alive and kicking, but I'm the only one that's doing any genealogical research (one of the big bummers of family tree research is the inability to get your family to care). George's Son Stephen moved to Greene Co. TN where he supposedly died in 1810. His Brother William also moved there and supposedly died there in 1828. I haven't looked into it any more closelsy than reviewing some of the later census records which showed that at least two more generations remained in TN. Sorry I don't have more info. How is your wife related to Joseph? Benjamin is my greatgrandfather. The boy named Charles in the 1860 census is a mystery. He is not a brother though. My father and grandfather are named Charles, but I do not know after whom in the family they are named. I cannot find Charles Alexander born in 1847 SC after this 1860 census. I believe that the Benjamin in the Cass County 1860 census is a relative of Benjamin's, perhaps a cousin, but not Joseph's son. My greatgrandfather, Benjamin, married his wife Catherine Raper after the Civil War was over. I have seen their marriage certificate. Hopefully, we can put together what we both have and figure out where Joseph was born and who his parents are. Looking forward to hearing from you. K. One is for John Alexander, born Aug 1853, father Thomas Alexander, mother Balinda Bray. In 1850 census Pulaski Co, Thomas Alexander is listed, with wife Malinda (Balinda), no children are listed in the household for 1850, they were married within the year. Thomas Alexander's first wife Balinda died soon after the birth of son John Alexander. Thomas Alexander married 2nd Matilda Sears. You can find Thomas & Matilda Alexander in 1860, 1870 census Pulaski Co. I am researching the family of Thomas & Balinda Alexander, son, John Alexander who married Lucy Keeney. I know on family tree, many people have John's wife Lucy died in 1890s, this is not true. I believe she lived until 102 yrs old, and died in 1957 in Oregon, where she had lived for many years with her son Luther E Alexander. In 1860, part of the family was in Cass Co., GA, and part was in Fulton Co., and at least one son, Benjamin, was listed in both counties. In Fulton Co, 1860, George W. Alexander and wife Elvina or Evelina had with them his brothers Benjamin, Joseph, and a brother, age 13, whose name appears to be Charles, although I've never seen Charles in Joseph's family elsewhere. (In fact, I thought that the name should possibly have been Columbus although it certainly didn't resemble Columbus.) Next door to George W.'s family in Fulton Co. was his sister Mary and her husband Rufus Bruce. E-mail me if you wish and we'll share information. I've hypothesized that this Alexander family was from Joseph Lowery Alexander, but I don't have much to back it up. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
