James was my GGF's brother and Vera and Mildred would have been my grandmother's cousins. I found the family living in the Bronx in the 1910 Federal census; also, found James and Maria in the 1920 Federal census. This leads me to believe that Vera and Mildred may have married between 1910 and 1920. I do not have any addt'l information about them and am trying to find out more. Any help would be appreciated! At the risk of taking too much of your time... I am ready to order a test for me, but which one. You suggest at one point the 37. What would the advantages of the 67 be? Can others (my Lyons, other Alexanders, etc, compare to a 37 or 67 I take as part of the Alexander project? You mention an Alexander with a William Andrew A. I don't have such in my (incomplete) records, but would love to be in touch with this person to compare other indicators (family names used for children, etc). Can you help us to get in touch? There is also an extensive DAR report on the Hezekiah lines (including my questionable Joseph) done in the 1950's which might mention a William Andrew A which I have not entered into my TMG. Author: RogAlexander Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.alexander/4207.1.2.1.1.1.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Mr. Lyons, First of all, Karen (mumpmow), who mentioned DNA here, is a member of our group and we have corresponded on the same issue, which led to her getting her dad to test his DNA as she says. (Karen, thank you for the introduction.) I am co-administrator of the Alexander DNA Project, so one might say I am who you can contact. The test for Alexanders is taken by a male Alexander because it is only through males that the yDNA is passed from one generation to the next. Since your surname, similar to Karen's situation, is not Alexander you will therefore have to find a male Alexander to test for you. Often the cost is shared by close, interested close family members. We recommend a 37 marker test which if you order through the Alexander DNA Project costs $191. (You can also opt to test 12, 25 or 67 markers at relative costs, but if you are interested in breaking through a brick wall as they say in your known line, 37 is probably the best. We can help you with that decision in more detail based on your current knowledge of your line, etc.) The test is taken by scraping the inside of the cheek with a tiny plastic toothbrush-type affair. All communication is done by email and internet. Here is where you can learn about DNA testing http://www.familytreedna.com/ The ordering procedure is done here (saves a few $ if you order through the Alexander DNA Project): http://www.familytreedna.com/(momzixb0f4zzc3jyefdjow45)/ftGroupAdd.aspx?act=Add&kit=D3613&code=C2064 scroll to 37 markers, enter your credit card on the next page. Notice they allow for two email addresses so you might share the info/fun with another if you wish. The next working day, FTDNA mails you the little test kit; probably takes a total of an hour to unpackage, understand the directions, scrape the cheek, repackage, and send it back. They even pay the return postage and it does not require a trip to the post office. They give you a "personal page", posting target completion dates so you can follow its progress through their system. You get notice by email of the results, and because you order through the Alexander DNA Project, they send your results to that project. We as admins get notices that you do so we can make sure your best interests are represented, and will correspond with FTDNA on your behalf. As more people are tested, you get auto emails from FTDNA advising of "matches" with a link where you can check it out. The advantage to DNA testing is that you will be able to identify and correspond with Alexanders with similar DNA's. In this way you can team with other "family" members of whom you had no previous knowledge and share information and research. For the benefit of our members we maintain a lineage spreadsheet of all members, so you can see in advance what lines of Alexanders are already in the group. This sheet is not on a public site and is maintained by me in Excel. We also have on our team an experienced DNA person who maintains, analyzes, organizes and answers all questions about all members' DNA's. On this sheet similar DNA's are grouped together so one can easily identify others he is close to, plus the DNA differences are highlighted within a group so that differences can be identified at a glance. We currently have 52 lines of members on the above sheet out of 67 members. (Some members have chosen not to share their lines for a variety of reasons we presume.) The results take about 8 weeks from order until you get them and we currently have 16 members waiting on results. Please notice that is a growth rate of 2 members per week which is what we have averaged over the last 3 months when our team began to spread the word. We expect that growth rate to continue indefinitely as word is spread by our growing number of members. While you may not closely match anyone when you first get your results, there are still benefits: 1. At least now you know your DNA and that you currently match no one previously tested, neither of which you knew before. 2. You can search for and spread the word to others who share or may share your ancestry on message boards like this, or distant possible cousins, or whatever. All of this depends on your particular circumstances and the length of your known line. You are welcome to contact me at [email protected] or post here for the benefit of others for questions, suggestions whatever. We have had a website in the past, but it has intentionally not been maintained because we are developing a new on. Until that time we have been communicating via emails and message boards. My Alexander family lived in Henderson & Madison Counties in Tennessee (western Tennessee), although I don't know where my g-g-grandfathre came from before that though (I don't know who his parents were). There were at least 3 or 4 Mecklenburg Alexander families living in the area at the time. I haven't found much information about them though. Someday I'll need to take a visit up to the Tennessee Room (where a lot of the genealogy records are kept for the state) in the Jackson Library in Madison county. We're both members of the Alexander Surname Y-DNA Project. We have a Genetic Distance - 2 on the 37 Markers test. I know we're related somehow, but I don't know how far up the line it goes. And it can't just be coincidence that there were multiple Alexander families from Mecklenburg living in the Madison/Henderson County areas of Tennessee around the 1850s. I don't know who Harvey M. Alexander's parents were, nor do I know where he was born (except for census records saying he was born in Tennessee). None of the names you listed are familiar to me (except for your mention of Maness...one of Harvey Alexander's daughters married a John Riley Maness sometime in the early 1900s). You may want to check out the website of The Alexanders of New Munster, Maryland (run by and maintained by H. Jack Wells). The following page is of Paris Alexander, who was born in Mecklenburg, but lived and was buried in Madison County, TN near where his children lived: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=hjackwells3&id=I663 Let me know if you have any other questions. Hopefully we can find some commonality with our relatives...the brick wall with Harvey M. Alexander and his mystery parents seems quite impossible to break. I wish I knew what the M. stood for in his middle name - maybe he went by that when he was a kid. Thanks! I saw your other posts and found it interesteing that your family had the same names ans settled in the same area of Indiana at about the same time and shared simlar. My line descended from George Alexander's son Samuel and his son Thomas. It can be difficult to definitively link records to your line with so many similarly named people in the same area.
