Author: lindalieby Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.alexander/3371.1.1.2.1.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Roger- I am a female descendant of Anguish Alexander, so I can't help with the DNA. However, I might be able to help with some of the lineage and documentation of his lines. I've been researching Anguish for a little while now and am constantly on the lookout for Anguish's parents- just like the rest of us! I can't wait to see the rest of the DNA results!!! I'd like to clarify some information you have on Anguish, if you don't mind, so that as we all work together we can come to the correct conclusions. If you disagree, PLEASE let me know and I will research some more. The bottom line for all of us is that we want it to be correct. My files indicate that Anguish was born abt. 1690. We have all made the assumption that he was born in Lancaster/Northampton VA because that is where we find his will in 1743. I don't know if anyone has discovered this as fact yet, though, so I'm not closing my mind to other possible birthplaces for him. Since his DNA has been shown to match that of John (married to Elizabeth Graham) and since we believe that John is descended from Sir William of Stirling, we finally have a place to start looking- yeah! Hopefully someone out there is a lot smarter than I am and will be able to find the connecting generations! :) Also, Anguish of VA more than likely died between 1742 and 1743. His will was written 28 Feb 1742. This would make him about 52 years old, which is much more likely than given the average lifespan of that time than the 81 years of age that he would have been had he lived until 1771- although it is not entirely impossible. More likely though, this death date is probably that of his grandson Angus, through Anguish's son Jesse, who died sometime before 1778 in Roaring River (near Wilkesboro) Wilkes, North Carolina. Speaking of Jesse (son of Anguish), I'd like to know if anyone has the marriage certificate or a record of some kind that shows that he was married to Mary or Elizabeth Merritt in South Carolina in 1747. I ask this because it appears that their children born prior to 1760 were all born in the Wilkes county area of North Carolina. I know that upstate South Carolina, including Union, was part of North Carolina before the border was finally settled between the two states, but Wilkes is enough further north that if anything, it might have been considered part of Virginia from time to time. In fact, I remember reading something that said that some of the early settlers in that area tried to swindle authorities by claiming to Virginia officials that they had paid taxes in North Carolina, and to North Carolina that they had paid them to Virginia. Gotta love em! The tax list for Wilkes County 1787 shows Travis, Randolph, Willis and James- still in North Carolina. There are also land records that show that they were selling their land about this time. Randol, Travis and James are found in 1790 census of Union County, South Carolina and the 1800 census of Union County shows Anguish (son of Randolph, grandson of Jesse) Lydda (widow of Randolph), James and John. So I'm thinking that Jesse and Mary/Elizabeth were probably married in North Carolina rather than South Carolina. Does anyone have any information on this? Hopefully if we all put our heads together, share whatever we find with each other, and carefully comb through and verify the information we already have we will be able to find the truth eventually. Thanks for letting me contribute here. Have a GREAT day!!! Linda Lieby Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
