    1. [31] Root Diggin' Trip
    2. Patricia Landwehr
    3. Hi Folks, I am leaving in the morning for a trip to Alabama with my aunts, who both are in their 80's. My grandfather (their dad) was born in Etowah County in 1884 and our ancestors lived in Etowah, Marshall, and Randolph Counties. Before 1850, they were in Georgia, with the possible exception of my BURGESS or BURGES ancestors. Anyway, we plan to visit the Mt. Vernon Church Cemetery (and maybe even attend church there on Sunday, if it's still operational). My great grandfather, Thomas J. Benton and his mother, Mary Martha BENTON, proved a homestead in Sec. 32, T-10-S, R-5-E, and I suppose that's where my grandfather lived. My other great grandfather was Angus McLEOD, who, along with several family members, are buried in the Mt. Vernon Church Cemetery. Angus and his second wife (who might be the sister of his first wife, Elizabeth BURGESS, d. Randolph County during the Civil War while Angus was away as a participant in that messy part of American history) are both buried in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. According to family sources, a Jarman Shoe Factory was built near or on the BENTON farm and it is a fact that my grandfather, Angus Thomas BENTON, received some funds from the Federal Government when the Redstone Arsenal (?) was built as a share of his interest in McLeod property. We just want to see the area where our ancestors lived, as there are many family stories about the family when they lived in NE Alabama. My aunts have never been to the area where their father was born and raised and they tell me stories about their grandparents' visits back to Alabama in the early 1900's. My question is: Where should I take them? The last known address I have of anyone in my great great grandfather's family (other than those who came to Texas) was his widow, Eliza A. McLeod on the 1900 Census, living alone, Rt. 4, Albertville, Marshall County. Evidently, my folks lived near the border of Marshall and Etowah Counties, as my great grandfather and his mother are enumerated in the 1880 census in Marshall County. My grandfather and all of his siblings, however, claimed to be from Etowah County. HELP!!!! Best regards, Pat (Benton) Landwehr
