I am so happy to see that this list is getting more active. I have been a member for three quiet years. My connection to Etowah County is through my great grandfather, James Mansfield McCarthy (McCarty, Carty), who died in Gladsden on 14 Feb 1911. I wrote two different times trying to get his death record but both times the response was that he was not listed in the death records. His daughter, Elizabeth was born in Birmingham and then baptized at Our Lady of Sorrows Church 6 July 1890. The family was in Alabama for at least ten years. His wife and children returned to their original home in Baltimore Maryland and are listed in the 1900 & 1910 census. The family bible states that my great grandfather remained in Gladsden, died there and is buried there. He is listed as a boilermaker in the 1880 census in Baltimore so possibly he went to Alabama for work. All the rest of the McCarthy family has always lived in Baltimore, MD. I hope so kind soul can help me find information on the McCarthy family during the ten years they spent in Alabama. I am pretty sure he used the name Carty most of the time in order to avoid the Irish connection.
