    3. The Lathamville community is still there. It is located on Hwy 68 between Kilpatrick and Crossville in DeKalb County. My sister-in-law's father, Judson Kilpatrick had a store there in the 1950's. Her sister still lives there. There is a church, Marvin Methodist, and a Masonic Hall which has probably been there in some form or another for probably 100 years. Lathamville is located about 10 miles from Etowah County. 2. Hi Diamond and All Thank you for your replies. I find the fact about Lathamville interesting. Who did Mr. Latham buy the property from? The government or the Indians? Does the town of Lathamville still exist? Is this the now Crossville? I have heard the name Crossville was given by a Copeland, is this correct? Is Dekalb near Etowah? Is Dekalb near Sand Mountain? The Sarah H Copeland in this mail is my Sarah Hannah Copeland. She lived with her sister Mary E Copeland and James R Teague 1900 in Lathamville. She then married my Great grandfather Jesse S Hallmark 1901 in Dekalb county. I have tracked them to 1930 where they lived in Arkansas. After that I know Jesse died in Texas 1956 and heard Sarah H died there in Arkansas about 1940. But, none of the people I talk with know anything more about Sarah H than I do. Parentage is a mistery. Again thank you for your responses and the time you took to help, it is most appreciated. Best regards Barbara

    2. Folks: I am finding myself going in major circles and am seeking some advise. I am looking for my Great grandmothers parentage, Have been for some years. I have acquired Ancesty so That's been alot of help BUT, I'm going in circles. See below and if anyone can offer any advice short of going to Alabama (No money) I would so appreciate it. Thanks Barbara Sarah Hannah Copeland brn between 1880 and 1884 Census says Alabama (MY BRICK) Clues 1900 she lived with her sister Mary E. Copeland Teague in Lathamville, Dekalb Mary was born according to 1900 Census 1874 Alabama. Mary was married to James R Teague 1891 in DeKalb Sarah Hannah was married to Jesse S Hallmark 1901 DeKalb 1920 One of Mary's sons Bill Teague living in Lathamville still, had living with him Tena Copeland noted as cousin born 1901. So, Sarah H and Mary E had a brother I'm guessing that had children. First thingI tried was to find Mary E. Copeland brn 1874 in Alabama. Found 4 of them. But, can't seem to track any of the families down to Lathamville which seems to be a key point. So, I'm striking out there. Jesse Hallmark was living in Etowah county in 1900 and in one year found Sarah H Copeland and married her in Dekalb county. So, I assume Etowah county and Dekalb are pretty close.

    3. Gail, I should have mentioned to you that the newspapers might be a good source. There is also a book in the Gadsden Library (and other places) that is an abstraction of birth and death records from the Gadsden Times. They were collected by a local gentleman and given to the library after his death The Library published them. My husband and I are abstracting the Gadsden Times also. We are currently in 1886. The four published volumes so far are in various libraries including Gadsden, Anniston, Huntsville, and many others. If you are not located in Gadsden, tell me where you are and I'll let you know the closest library that has the books. 1. Birth Records for 1887 Alabama
    2. Gail, You may also want to check the local newspaper for that timeframe. I've found some in the Cleburne Co. Paper for that timeframe, so maybe Etowah's paper published them as well. Usually didn't give the child's name, but named the parents and whether a boy or girl. Official birth records were not required to be recorded until 1908. However, some counties may have kept a record of birth. The Alabama Archives have some midwife records. Contact them to find out what counties/years are available either on microfilm or in hard copy. C. Cruise Hi, Can someone tell me if they have birth records in Alabama for 1887. Gail
