Hi. I am searching for information on a black woman who lived in Cherokee County Alabama in the late 1920s and 1930s when my Dad was a boy. Her name was Molly Kirby or Kerby. They were share croppers and she worked in their home. The kids all called her Aunt Molly. Dad says she was a special lady and very good his family. He is 80 years old and asked if I would try to locate her grave and take him there to pay his respects. I think I may have found her on the 1890 census (spelled Kerby) in Leesburg but I can't be sure it is the right person. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. A photo to share with my father would be wonderful. Thanks to you all. Rose Owens
Request help in locating the burial place/cemetery of each of the following (my great grandparents): Reuben B. NAIL b. 18 Feb 1853, GA; m. Sarah A. Boyd 05 Dec 1872, AL. Sarah was b. 14 Feb 1849, AL. Sarah Anna (Boyd) Nail died 3 Jun 1920, Albertville, Marshall, AL. Death Certificate shows "Sara Ann Nails." Death Certificate does not show place of burial. Undertaker was listed as F. Archer, Albertville. Reuben "Berl" Nail died 22 Nov 1940, Gadsden, Etowah, AL. He was living at 1123 Hurst Street. Death Certificate shows that Rufus G. Nail (son) was in charge of body and that Reuben was buried 23 Nov 1940 in Marshall County, AL. Brown-Service was listed as "person in charge of body." Note: (1) Contact with representative of Brown Funeral Home, Boaz, reveals the funeral service had changed ownership and no records exist for that earlier period. (2) Rufus G. Nail and family are buried at Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery vic Albertville, AL. I have visited there but could not find locations for Reuben and Sarah. There appears to be unmarked grave sites in vicinity of Rufus (R Gus) and Ploma (wife). Thanks much for any help to include putting me in contact with a relative or possible source. Billy E. Nale (name was changed by grandmother) Decatur, AL

Subject: Davis, Carter, Kelly, Cochran in Gadsten hello-- > >I am interested in genealogy of Carter, Davis, Butler, Kelley, Kelly, Singleton and Perryman families in Calhoun (Anniston) and Etowah (Gadsten) counties. >Particularly the Davis of Gadsten. Also the Kelly of Anniston and it's relation to the Perryman family of Anniston. My paternal g-mother, Curtis Lee Carter (born in Georgia -possibly Bowden- about 1886), married George Singleton Kelly about 1900 or so, possibly in Anniston and had son Arthur R, Kelly in 1903. GSK died, about 1910 or so, probably in Anniston and then Curt married Dorsie C. Perryman (also born in Georgia about 1886), in Anniston, raised ARK and several Perryman children, all this at 413 Glen Addie Ave. in Anniston. GSK and DCP may have been cousins. Next generation up from GSK and DCP are my current brick wall. My maternal g-mother, Lena Mae Carter, sister to Curtis Lee Carter, married Henry Law Davis around 1909 or slightly before, had 2 daughters, Dorothy Davis (b. approx 1910) and Edwina Clay Davis (b. 1912), they lived in Gadsten in 19-teens. My older brother recalls that HLD was a lineman, broke his back in job-related accident, prob. in Gadsten around 1920. But I have found him in the 1910 census listed as living in Anniston, employed as an insurance agent, and married for one year to my g-mother, Lena, both living with Lena's mother, Mrs. M. R. Carter, a widow aged 53. HLD is current brick wall in this line. Father of Lena and Curtis also brickwall, although their mother may have been a Robinson, possibly in Bowden GA. Any information about any of these would be greatly appreciated. >Thanks, >Mike Kelley
I understand that the Dwight Manufacturing Personnel Records are at the Gadsden Public Library. http://www.library.gadsden.com/genealogy.html If that don't work, let me know. delilah
In 1930, Joseph Ray McCleskey was a bank president living in Gadsden, Alabama. His daughter, Nancy May, married Jack Hastings Mayfield (from Texas) between 1930 and 1937. When the daughter of such a prominant family (the family home in 1930 was worth $25,000), marries there is usually an article in the paper about the wedding. Nancy attended Sophie Newcomb College and (according to her obituary in the Houston Chronicle) that is where she met Jack. Jack (a doctor) and Nancy were living in Houston, Texas by 1940. They had a son, Jack, Jr; in 1937. There is no record of his birth in Texas, however, a sister was born in Houston in 1940. Is there anyone who could look for a marriage license for me and/or a newspaper article about the wedding? Margaret McCleskey, Arlington, Texas
Thank you for making me aware of this web site. I have tried to inform every file manager in Texas of this service. Margaret McCleskey
