I doubt it. I read the microfilmed copies of the newspapers at the Gadsden Library. You might be able to read them at the Anniston Library because they also have the Gadsden papers on microfilm. Carolyn Condray-Merritt
They are available at the Gadsden Library and at the Alabama State Archives. ----- Original Message ----- From: "m m" <alabamanonna@webtv.net> To: <aletowah@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 03, 2006 11:05 PM Subject: Re: [ALETOWAH] Gadsden death & burial 1911 > Can you read the old papers on line? > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ALETOWAH-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Thank you
A thought regarding the nonpublication of some obits in the Gadsden times. Both my grandmother and one of my uncles died in 1917. Neither deaths were in the oblituaries, but by doing a thorough page by page read of the Gadsden times starting the day after their deaths and continuing through a couple days later, I found both deaths as small four line articles buried on one of the pages of the paper and the Gadsden Evening Journal. So if you checked just the obits, you might have missed the death elsewhere in the paper. Good Hunting. Carolyn Condray-Merritt
Can you read the old papers on line?
I am catching up today. Been out of town. I looked for two Alabama death records--one from 1909 and one from 1906. Nothing was found. However, a friend found one of them as she just happened to recognize the name--it was a nickname not the full name that I had used for the search. The date, location, cause of death, etc. .were all correct so we know it is my gr gr grandma (Sarah Ann Lavinia Emmaline REAVES THOMAS was listed as Emma THOMAS) from Calhoun Co. The other has all the details correct except the name. It should be for William Thomas or Tom POTTER (or any variation of the name)--however, it appears as J.F. (very hard to read)--one of his sons who didn't die until 1970. Tom POTTER was born in Cherokee/Etowah Co. And married the Alice WESCOTT (d. 1894) daughter of Capt. Henry F. WESCOTT of Gadsden. Tom POTTER was killed in Walker County in a mining accident in 1906 while visiting a son who worked in the mine. All of the details, including the age and cause of death, are correct on the death certificate so I am certain it is he. I keep hoping to find mention in either the Gadsden Times or in a Walker County paper or one of the mining papers. Be creative with the names if you have access to the index. I looked at all POTTER certificates in the index and found the one that matched--except for the given name. John is correct that not all obits were listed in the Times. In producing the abstracts, however, there were lots that were very small mentions that were unfortunately not picked up in the obituary book published by the library. Obits were not always lumped together on one page but may have appeared as almost an afterthought in local news of neighboring communities or from letters or newspaper exchanges from other areas. Of course, some of the very ones I was hoping for do not appear. It is hoped, however, that some mention might appear in another paper in a nearby county, etc. Don't give up hope! This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Nix, Boon, Alexander, Sewell Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/DS.2ADE/1554 Message Board Post: I am looking for Horatio M. NIX. Not a common NIX name and he does not seem to be a common man. I first met him when he married Lucinda J. Boon 10 June 1861 in Blount County Alabama. She was the daughter of Mary Alexander and Tyre Boon, and the Granddaughter of Mary and Daniel D. Alexander. My ggg-grandmother was also a daughter of Daniel D. Alexander and a younger sister to Mary, her name was Lucinda so it appears that Mary named her daughter after her sister, my ggg-grandmother. In turn it appears that my ggg-grandmother named her first son for her sister's husband Tyre. But I am searching for Horatio. My knowledge of him is spare, but when they married Lucinda was 35 years old and it appears this was her first marriage. So I estimate that Horatio could have been between 20 and 40, born between 1821 and 1841. The Boon and Nix families were all from Pickens area in South Carolina, and can be found on the same census pages in 1830 through 1850, and then in Blount and Etowah Counties in Alabama. I know nothing about Horatio before they married. My second bit of information concerns Horatio two months after his marriage; Nix, Horatio M., enlisted as a private 10 Aug 1862 in Company E by Captain Lewis; on muster roll to 30 Apr 1863; muster roll to 11 Jun 1864 reported he was absent without leave; muster roll from 1 Jul to 31 Aug 1864 reported he deserted 10 Mar 1864; no further record. I have some history on Company E. which shows that they served most of their duty in Alabama, and there was a serious problem, particularly late in the War, with men departing (deserting) as the unit was near their home town. However there is no indication that Horatio ever returned to continue their two month long married life. Lucinda in fact married a second time to Pleasant Sewell on 8 June 1869 in Etowah County, Alabama. And I am searching for any sign of Horatio M. Nix. <daltonn@knology.net>
Death certificates in Alabama did not start until 1908 and even then were not required by state law until 1940. Not everyone had death certificates and they were not commonplace back then. Also, everyone that died in Gadsden did not have an obituary or even a notice of death in The Gadsden Times. John Awbrey
I am so happy to see that this list is getting more active. I have been a member for three quiet years. My connection to Etowah County is through my great grandfather, James Mansfield McCarthy (McCarty, Carty), who died in Gladsden on 14 Feb 1911. I wrote two different times trying to get his death record but both times the response was that he was not listed in the death records. His daughter, Elizabeth was born in Birmingham and then baptized at Our Lady of Sorrows Church 6 July 1890. The family was in Alabama for at least ten years. His wife and children returned to their original home in Baltimore Maryland and are listed in the 1900 & 1910 census. The family bible states that my great grandfather remained in Gladsden, died there and is buried there. He is listed as a boilermaker in the 1880 census in Baltimore so possibly he went to Alabama for work. All the rest of the McCarthy family has always lived in Baltimore, MD. I hope so kind soul can help me find information on the McCarthy family during the ten years they spent in Alabama. I am pretty sure he used the name Carty most of the time in order to avoid the Irish connection. Here is the family: James Mansfield McCarthy born 18 Feb 1858 in Lowell, Middlesex Co, MS (parents born in Ire) married Elizabeth Whibdy born 3 April 1855 born in Cape Town South Africa (Her parents born in Eng& Ire) Children: Helen "Nell" b 24 April 1883 Rose b 17 Oct 1884 died 1884 James b 26 Nov 1885 William b 19 Dec 1887 Elizabeth b 14 Jun 1890 Johnnie b 3 Aug 1892 Thanks for any help finding James Mansfield McCarthy's death & burial records and any insight into the Etowah county history during the 1890s that might shed light on the reason they were in Alabama. I was wondering if you might possibly help me with another Posey? Richard Posey had 3 children and according to the 1900 census 2 of them moved with him to Sunflower County MS. George W. & Joseph Posey. Joseph Posey married Lydia Turner abt 1903, and according to 1910 census, had 1 child named Ethel ( They had another child in 1911 named Sammie Lou). Lydia went by (Liddie). Lydia died in 1911 or 1912 when Sammie Lou was 3 months old. In the 1920 census Joseph Posey had married someone else and had 3 other children. His brother George and his wife, Mattie raised the first two girls as their own. I have been trying to find information about the Turner family and haven't seem to be able to. I was told that Lydia was 1/2 Native American, and her mother was full-blood. In the 1910 census records, Lydia (Liddie) said both she and her parents were born in Mississippi.

There could have been a mix-up with the names Nettie and Mattie. Perhaps someone heard it incorrectly.
