Al Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Al/Etowah/620 Surname: WALKER, Bedford ------------------------- Hi, I believe we have written previously about the Walker line. I just read your posting and wondered where you got the name Caroline for John A.E.Walker's first wife? It is probably correct, I have heard squabbles over the Catharine Bedford name that I have been told was his first wife. I just want to find out her correct name. Do you have his second wife as mary ellen holliday? John had 11 children with Catharine/Caroline and eight more with Mary Ellen. My line is Adam Edgar, brother to your Joe Sam. Have you spoken to Brenda Robinson [email protected]? She is of JOHN ANDERSON "jack" WALKER line. also brother to Joe Sam. I believe she was asking about you recently.
If someone has asked about others being interested in Turkey Town, please count me in. My G G'Father, Henry Chambers SANFORD, and his brother, Lemuel J. SANFORD, were mentioned as having been in Turkey Town in mid to late 1820s in a locally published history of Cherokee, Co. Both were still residents of Greenville Dist., SC at the time but did move to what is now southern Cherokee Co c1835. I believe the brief cite said that Turkey Town was a trading post and that Henry had some sort of shop there. Any information at all would be appreciated. Mary from Texas ask about the Turkeytown Methodist churchIt is there and the cemetery is well kept. I live near there, Turkeytown was named for a Cherokee Indian chief by the name of Little Turkey. About 1838 the remaining indians were sent on the Trail of Tears. Every fall the indian descendants meet at the southern edge of Turkeytown for a special day. This is on highway us411 and there are a type of monument there telling about the Cherokees. My wife has some descendants buried at the cemetery but we don`t know about the cemetery fund if any as we have just found out lately about her people. W.C.

I, too, would like to know about the history of Turkeytown. I would also like to connect with others who are interested in the family histories of those buried at Turkeytown Methodist Cemetery. Is there a viable Turkeytown Methodist Church there today? Who owns the cemetery? Is there a fund for its upkeep? Mary in TX Mary: Indeed, there is a very pretty Turkeytown Methodist Church with a well kept cemetery. Within the last 2 years, I have learned of my VENABLE relatives buried there and have visited the cemetery. Some of it is very, very old, but well maintained. I am sure that the church members keep up the cemetery. Betty Venable Phillips? Birmingham, Alabama VENABLE/CRUMPTON/PULLEN
Hello, everyone. A friend on the Chilton County list suggested I try my query here, as you all have a genealogical society and I might find some help. I am looking for information about three descendants of Charles F. and Matilda G. Diffenderfer, who were living in Alabama in 1903. They are: Mrs. D.L. Pitner (nee Maud Diffenderfer) b 1875, PA, living in 1903 in Birmingham, AL Herbert W. (or W. Herbert) Diffenderfer, b. 1879 or 1880, Nebraska, living in 1903 in Palos, AL Will C. Diffenderfer, b. 1883, Albion, NE, who homesteaded land in Baldwin County around 1899-1908. I believe all three of these folks worked at the Southern Industrial Association, pecan and peach orchards, in Baldwin County. This operation was owned by their uncle, Lincoln P. Goodhue, of Chicago, IL. Any help in tracing any records of the association would be wonderful. Can anyone forward this message to anyone who can help me find out what happened to Maud and Herbert, in particular? I know Will C. moved to Pensacola, as he became my grandfather (I never knew him--he died in 1929). Thanking you in advance for any/all leads. Best regards, Laura Alderson, Raleigh, NC
The Sunday 6/18/2000 Gadsden Times printed a pullout on Neighborhoods. It included Keener, Turkeytown, Egypt, Aurora, Ball Play, Whitesboro, Crudup, Ivalee, Gallant, Littleton, Duck Springs. It tells a little about each community then and now. Super pictures. As I live in CA a wonderful "Cousin" from the area sent it to me and I ordered several more copies for other friends and family members. Don't know if they still have copies. Will

My great-grandmother was Mary Arcane Haynie Jenkins Summerlin born 9/15/1864. She married and lived in Clay County but I believe her family must have been from Etowah County. As a girl, she apparently lived in Rome, Georgia for a short time and rode a steamboat on the Coosa River from Rome to Gadsden to bury a baby brother. Her father was John Haynie but do not know her mother's name. I think she had brothers named George and Eugene and sisters named Ida (Ware) and Rilla (Elliott). Also believe John Haynie had a brother named Enoch who lived in Gadsden. Does anyone have information on John Haynie and his family? I haven't been able to find anything on them in Rome, Georgia or Clay County other than Mary Arcane, my great-grandmother. Would appreciate any clues and assistance.. Carol
I have reason to believe that my GGGrandfather, Manning Bolin, and his wife Nancy, and his mother, Althea (Athy), all from York County (or District, depending on time period), SC, moved to Etowah County with, or after, at least two of their children. I have court records showing that Arthur and William Bolin and their grandmother Althea(Athy) Bolin were all in Stanfield, Etowah Co., AL in 1883. Since I can find no record of Manning or Nancy Bolin having died or been buried in York County, SC, I think it's possible that they too, went to Etowah County. Since I am from NC, and am a "fur piece" from Alabama, I would appreciate any information on any of the above people, such as death dates or burial places, and even spouses and children of the above mentioned Arthur and William Bolin. I thank any of you, in advance, for any and all help or assistance you may give me, and will be happy to look up any York County, SC information in the courthouse there, for anyone with York County Connections --- Bob Bolin --- [email protected] --- EarthLink: It's your Internet.

Al Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Al/Etowah/613 Surname: Campbell ------------------------- Heather I am a Campbell, George Lafayette Campbell was my 2g grandfather. My grandfather was George H. Campbell, Sr and father was George H. Jr. Reference to the two gravestones, it is my belief that one of the stones, was in error. It looks as if someone covered it with cement and used it as another grave stone. Over the years, it looks as if the cement broke off and revealed the original errorenous date. I do not know whose grave the cemented stone marked. I also have reached a deadend at William M. Campbell. He was born abt 1807 in Virginia. Supposedly he was married 2 times. The first wife's name is unown and they were married abt 1828 possibly in Greene County Tn. His 2nd wife was Elizabeth Rachel Feesel, who he married abt 1835 in Greene County, Tn. I assume, by the birth dates and the marriage dates that George Lafayette Campbell was the son of the first wife (unknown). My email address is [email protected] Please contact me if you like. Dan W. I am in receipt of a letter to Noah Strickland, dated Mar 1, 1864 concerning the death of his sons, Charles (Charley) and Joseph (Crow) Strickland. As I've mentioned before, I am trying to locate Charles Strickland, husband of Tabitha (or Talitha)(born in Georgia) who was in the 1850 and 1860 Census' for Paulding County, Georgia. My great, great grandfather, William Wesley Strickland was born in December of 1864 - so it doesn't look like this Charles is mine...I have no idea who Charles' siblings were..all I know is that his date of birth would be circa 1830 in Alabama..... I also know that the names "Wesley" and "Anderson" keep repeating in the family line. (IF this is my Charles, there's a definite paternity issue here.) If you have access to the 1870 Census records, PLEASE let me know... IF this is YOUR Charles Strickland and you would like a copy of the letter, email me...
