Does anyone know if there were coal mines operating around Altoona about 1900? I'm looking for my ggrandmothers parents. We beleive they lived in Altoona around that time. Her parents names were supposedly Jim or Tom and Martha Jones. Her father was white, her mother an indian. The rumors were that her father killed her mother around 1900 or 1901, and their baby whose name was something like Redy or Ready, ended up being taken care of in a camp of miners. Does anyone know of a story like that or have any information on that area at all? What indian tribes lived around that area, if any? It seems like if this is true, there would be an article in the newspaper or some kind of record. Any suggestions on how I could find this? Thanks, Debra Westervelt
