    1. [31] SULTANA ANNIVERSARY
    2. GEORGE BEASON
    3. Today, April 27th is the 136th anniversary of the explosion on the steamship SULTANA in the Mississippi. Approximately 1800 people perished in the tradegy. That is more than the 1500+ who died in the TITANIC sinking. Most of the victims were released USA prisoners of war from Southern prison camps. Almost 400 were registered as from the State of Tennessee. They served in the 2nd and 3rd Tennessee Voluntary Cavalry, USA. Less known is the fact that at least 25 of those serving with the Tennessee Troops were from Alabama. They were mostly from St. Clair, Etowah and Blount Counties. Several died in the wreck. Saturday, April 28th, 2001, there will be a reunion of descendants of victims and survivors at the Mt. Olive Cemetery in Knoxville, TN where a monument to the Sultana victims was erected. Respectfully, George C. Beason, great grandson of James David Baggett and great great nephew of Lewis A. Deerman, both survivors.

    2. help anyone Hi, I'm trying to find out if Etowah Co. has a "heritage book", and if so, are there any articles on the Kilpatrick family. Do you know if anyone has access to this book? I descend from Allen Columbus Kilpatrick. His father was Miles Alexander Kilpatrick, I think. I'd appreciate any info at all. Many thanks, Caroline

    3. can anyone help this person? From 1870 census I have found that my mother's great and great/great grandfather lived in Gadsden. Census 280 #'s 25 and 26. WC was my mother's great grandfather and the Josephine age 2, her grandmother. Is there anyway from papers in Gadsden to find if there are pictures, wills, or any more information on JW Lee and his family or WC Lee and his girls. WC died July 3rd 1877. Would he be found in cemeteries in Etowah County. Francis Griffin Lee, his wife, came to Texas after his death. She had 3 girls and a son on the way at the time of his death. She came to Texas with her parents, James and Margaret Griffin. They settled N of the Dallas area in Collin County. Margaret and her parents are buried not far from Anna, Texas. WC Lee enlisted in the Confederate army Company D 10th Alabama Reg in June, 1861. Family members called him Captain William Carroll Lee but the war department just lists him as a private. I know this information from a copy of a Civil War Pension from Texas (#13273). His brother Gregg Lee testified to the pension board around 1900. He was 68 and living in Rock Spring, Ettowah County, Alabama. Any additional information or places to look would be extremely helpful. Thank you, Sherry Snelling [email protected]

    1. [31] Ancestor Swap Meet
    2. Dear Northeast Alabama Genealogy Society: To all, both members and volunteers, thanks for another wonderful Ancestor Swap Meet. Congratulations to all through their long hours of work, they paid off again. The guest speakers, the food, the door prizes and just the overall fellowship couldn't have been better. I met several new friends and was reaquainted with old friends and "cousins". I also hope to be getting in touch with others who have the same Surnames as I have, and hope that some of my brickwalls will come down. I hope that things will go well for everyone and have the 4th Ancestor Swap Meet next year. Take care and as always HAPPY FAMILY HUNTING! Jackie in Oxford

Clayton, RoseMary Hyatt, Gadsden Public Library, Gadsden Area Chamber of Commerce, Gadsden-Etowah Tourism Center, Local Merchans who donated door prizes and everyone else who volunteered to make this such a wonderful event. The following statement from the booklet provided in our packets says it all for me. "The Members of the Northeast Alabama Genealogical Society, thank you for coming today. We hope that you enjoy the Swap Meet, but more than that we hope you find a missing ancestor or two. If not try to meet and make at least one new friend. Not often do you get to talk to others who are as interested in "dead ancestor" as you are, so take advantage of it." I got to visit with people that I have met through my research in Gadsden, all together in one room enjoying what we love to do the most--search for kin. Hi Fred Nicholson, Donna Lemons, Artie Morgan, Angie McBurnett, Carol Valladares and a new friend Joan Mims. I got to meet someone special that I am constantly using in my sourcing, Mr. W. A. Lewis. You will see his name in many wonderful books. I am so grateful that he and others have spent so much of their time putting down the names of my family, when they died and where they are buried. All you have to do is pick up a book and someone has done all the hard work for you. Where would we be in our research without these help tools, especially if you live in another state like I do? I also got to purchase some more books for my "home library" at great prices. (By the way, if anyone has a copy of "Keener, Alabama A History Etowah County" by Robbie Lewis Parker and W. Aaron Lewis that they would like to sell I would love to purchase one.) There were many door prizes given away. There was a table full of wonderful gifts. I won a prize, too, a rabbit figurine from Frame World, Inc. in Gadsden. At each table were "trees" that we hung our surnames lists on so that everyone could go to each table and read off the names in hopes of finding connections to other researchers. These were really great. They made it so easy to connect. A booklet was in our packet which listed all the surnames family files available. You could get a copy of everything they provided in the files. The booklet also contained a list of people attending the Swap Meet and their surname lists, listings of family reunions, class reunions, decoration days at the cemeteries, church homecomings, history of old cemeteries and an article about Howard Gardner Nichols and the Dwight Manufacturing Company. For the price to register I found my experience this year and last year to be "priceless". I'm sorry to say that there may not be another Swap Meet. Anyone who missed out on the Swap Meets in Gadsden may never get to enjoy what those of us who did get to attend experienced. Carolyn, Rosemary, if there is another Swap Meet, I will be there and I will volunteer my time in any way that I can even if it means using my vacation time. Just let me know what I can do to help out. I would hate to see anyone miss out on such a wonderful experience. Thank you all for the visit and the memories. 3. Where is Hokes Bluff? My great grandparents moved away from the area (Etowah/Marshall Counties) in 1900, but my great great grandfather, Angus McLeod, is buried at Mt Vernon Church Cemetery (which I think is in Marshall County). I assume they went to church there. I don't know where my Bentons went to church -- they were Baptist and lived in Etowah County. I can assure you they went somewhere -- they were very much church-going folks!
