John Hyram Walker and Mollie Bedford? These are my great, great grandparents. What is the connection to your ancestors? Darrell Battles via Allie Mae Walker
Do you have a Laura Jane Holcomb who married a Doc Cartee anywhere in your records?
I am trying to locate info on the parents of John Eugene Redwine who said that he was born in Gadsden AL on 12/31/1904 (is there a record of this birth?). In his pension application he stated that his father was Sol Redwine and his mother was Mattie Brothers (could her name have been Naomi?) He had said that his mother died in a flu epidemic during WWI and was buried in a cemetery behind a watermill up from 1st Street.I don't find her death recorded in the 1908-1959 Alabama Death Record. Thanks for any help you can give me in finding info on Sol or Mattie. You can email me: [email protected]
I have a Mattie Brothers whose son, John Eugene Redwine was born 12/31/1904 in Gadsden. I am trying to find info on this Brothers family. Also any Redwine family.
All I know about John H. Morgan is he was born in TN in 1818. I have no brothers or sisters for him. He owned land in AR and married Martha Cooper in AL.
Stuart, It is possible that you are looking for William Franklin Huff (22 April 1883 - 11 September 1966). He was my father's uncle and we all knew him as "Uncle Boss." He and his wife, Mattie Alva Hill, (married 17 January 1907) had a farm in Glencoe before I was born. As a child, I remember visiting their home in Glencoe once in a while, and it seems that we turned off of Route 431 on to Air Depot Road and went past the old wartime warehouses and the high school to get there. The reason I would suspect a connection is that I remember Uncle Boss's son, Howard Huff (b. early 1909), was involved with the Glencoe Fire Department in some way. (Now I only knew Howard as Howard; if his full name was WILLIAM Howard Huff, which is certainly possible, then I would put my money on him rather than Uncle Boss.) Anyway, Uncle Boss, Aunt Mattie, Howard, and his wife, Grace, are buried in Crestwood Cemetery in East Gadsden. These programs are excellent - speakers as well as vendors with all the books you "need". Alabama Genealogical Society Fall Seminar > ----- Original Message ----- Make your plans now to attend the Fall Seminar in Montgomery, AL, on Saturday, October 20, 2001. We will explore the two primary overland routes used to move into the area which is now known as Alabama. An excellent panel of knowledgeable speakers will present a program on the two primary overland routes (the Federal Road and the Huntsville Road) used by pioneers to move into the area now known as Alabama. The Federal Road was a major influence in the settlement of the Mississippi Territory during the period between the Louisiana Purchase and the removal of the Creek Indians. In 1806 a horsepath for postal riders through a malaria-infested wilderness was opened through the Creek Nation, stretching from middle Georgia to coastal Alabama. It was widened into a military road starting in 1811 in anticipation of the War of 1812, running from Fort Wilkinson near Milledgeville, GA to Fort Stoddert at the Mount Vernon Landing on the Mobile River, just east of present day Mount Vernon, AL. The Federal Road carried thousands of pioneers and directly contributed to the dramatic increase in Alabama's population between 1810 and 1820. The Huntsville Road was the main thoroughfare for settlers coming from the Tennessee Valley into Alabama, running from Huntsville through Blountsville, Jonesborough and Bucksville into Tuscaloosa. Mr. James H. Walker, Jr., author of "Roupes Valley," will present his Huntsville Road research. Three speakers on the Federal Road are being provided by Landmarks Foundation of Montgomery, Inc., which manages a collection of 40 restored19th century buildings in Montgomery. They are Mark Dauber, Dr, Craig Mann and Jeffrey C. Benton.
