Central Institute was a college in Central a small town on the Central Plank Road on Hwy 9 in Elmore County about 12 miles above Wetumpka, Alabama. It was in Coosa county at the time of the civil war. It was in opperation for about 20 years or so but most of the teachers and the students joined the civil war and the school never was back to before the war enrollment. The buildings still were standing when I was a girl back in the 1960's. I haven't been over that way to know if they still are standing or not. Central is just a wide spot in the road, not much to speak of at all now. But was a thriving community back in the late 1800's. I have many families from the area myself. Brown, Hall, Boswell, Thornton, Warrick, Central still had a post office when I married in 1968 but not long after it was closed and all the mail was routed to Electic. The post office was in a tiny little building next to Owen Young's store and hi! s wife ran the post office.
