    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Thrower Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VS.2ADI/22.149 Message Board Post: I found my ancester in the 1860 Census of Coosa County Alabama. Those listed at Wetumpka Prison begins on page 115 HH 833/842 of the 1860 Census of Coosa County Alabama Southern Div., Post Office Wetumpka, "State Prison as Alabama Penitentiary." Prison guards are listed followed by alphabetical list of convicts, age, perhaps the date they entered the prison, and reason they were there. An interesting history of the prison is found at this Alabama Department of Corrections site: http://agencies.state.al.us/doc/history.htm which states the prison was completed in 1841 and ".....Except for a few hardened criminals, most convicts were pardoned for the war. In the spring of 1865, the Federal Troops released all convicts, except one who remained voluntarily at the Walls....." So if your ancestor was a prisoner there in 1865 he was probably released. Does anyone know the district and page number of the 1870 census of Elmore Co, Alabama that lists convicts at the Wetumpka prison ? Thanks Mary L Prewitt
